i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.
1.Vedha:i know he always go for a hindi tune in his films(mostly for Modern theatres). No alterations! he just copy a full hindi song !
best examble:Manam ennum medai mele(Gil tho ye kulu yahag)
2.MSV: i hear that(from Sujatha's book"Neerkumiligal") "thulluvatho elamai" was a song copied from english to almost all famous indian langages. Is there any other songs MSV copied?
3.Illayaraja:Even the GOD of MUSIC Raja sir did some thing like this.He just used that "I love you"style from BOneyM Sunny for "darling darling"in priya.I have heard a totally same song like "Kanavu kanum valkkai yavum" in Hindi also.(i forgot the film).
and i dont know who is the MD for the song"ehu pal vadiyum mugam! ethai parpathu than sugam".But i heard the same song in an english film.
4.ARR : i was told from my friends that he did copying intelligently.drum beats and some music styels from cassettes like "enigma, ace of base".And the humming before the song "thillana thillana" is a 100%copy from the film"the island of Dr.Mozeru".
5.SA Rajkumar : a lot of help from hindi! best example "mallikai puve malligai puve parthaya" from "didi tera thevaru thevana"
5.DEVA:hee..hee..the master.(better we see how many songs he did on his own instead of seeing how many songs he copied!)
like wise there is a lot of songs are copied from Tamil to Hindi also..
Now its your turn friends....

I think the song "kataaLan kaattu vazhi..." from kizhakku seemaiyile (duet with SJ's voice) by ARR has been "heavily inspired" from thaazhaiyaam poo mudichchu from baagappirivinai.
Vijay/bb: Do you have these songs? I have both but am clueless about loading onto RA/mp3 etc.

There is a funny Song which starts like this
'I married a Female Wresler'...
Our 'Kalyaana samayal saadham' song is heavily inspired by this song (or may be its ancestors!)
If anyone knows info about this song, pls. let me know.

Theme music of mouna rAgam is copied Love Theme from Flashdance.

are you referring to "what a feeling" from flashdance ? If it is so, I totally disagree.

"Love Theme" is an instrumental song from Flashdance.
Yes. indeed. The pattern is 90% same. Notes have been changed though.

MS :
Sridhar Seetharaman explains it.
Love Theme is a piano-based instrumental piece. I haven't heard it in 10 years but if I remember it right it is the third piece on the cassette (side A).
mouna rAgam's theme music is clearly lifted from this piece.
Other raja lifts :
pootukkal pOttAlum (kshatriyan) is derived from 'My Favourite things' - The Sound of Music.
First song (in bus) in the film yAthra (malayAlam - balu mahEndra)is fully copied from 'My Favourite things' - The Sound of Music.
chittukuruvi vetkappadudhu - third movement from New World Symphony (Antonin Dvorak)
veetukku veetukku vASappadi vEnum (kizhakku vAsal) - First Movement Mozart's Symphony No 25 (also copied in Titan's ad music about 10 years back).

Yeah I checked 'Love Theme' from Flash Dance.
you can find a midi file in this site.
http://www.fast.net.au/tashjian/index.html?music.html
There are some traces. May be if we play the tune in reverse ( or change the notes in random order), it may sound like 'Mouna Ragam' theme music. :)

I heard this piece too, and thought they were the same. I think that piece was 'inspired' in that it was used to sync with similar 'love-scenes' in the film. I mean they have similar use in the film. Even the theme from love story sounds very familiar when u hear mouna raagam. I can see only this similarity, but there is some fresh 'raja' thing there thats not in the inspired pieces.
And same tune played with harmonica (is it called leitmotiv ? - whenever u use the same tune to remind u of a person or place) whenever karthik enters the scene sounds so much different. And the same tune when revathy asks for a divorce....
its a classic!

To me only the santham sounds similar. The chords I hear in mouna ragam are totally different. (I think it goes for a scle change..)

Flash Dance piece with Mouna Ragam--konjam remotaa thaan erukku resemblance.
but as far the "chittu kuruvi vetkapaduthu" song goes--99% thazhuval mathiri ullathu.

Today, when I was going thro my old Piano book, I found another piece somewhat similar to 'Mouna Ragam' Theme. The Title is 'Romance sans Paroles' composed by Gabriel Faure. The Pattern is almost the same. This piece is supposed to be played fast. when you slow down, you'll get Mouna Ragam feel.
It is in Natural scale but lot of accidentals. That gives the beauty.
Most of the Romantic songs have some kind of similarity. For example if you take Chopin's piano pieces, the progression is entirely different than others. His compositions are real romantic.

PG,
The starting of 'Veetukku Veetukku vaasappadi venum' song is very close to 'Grand Father's Clock' song.
check this site for 'Grand Father's Clock' song. (Midi File)

Yes, what you said is correct. Whatever it is, Mozart's 25th Symphony is the Parent (Base Class!)

Naveen,
I was taught that song in my 5th std. in music classes. I remember having noticed a slight resemblance between this and the veetukku song. but the tune quickly changes after the opening line. also the beat has been changed to adi(8-beat) in the tamil version.
Naveen, pl. try to see whether u have the 'punnagai mannan' theme original somewhere;)

I am sorry friends! I think all these sources show only very weak traces of similarity which might have been incidental and not intentional! Also similar pattern doesn't mean similar notes! Please forgive me if I've told something wrong!
Yours,
Vijay.

'the kanavu kaanum vaazhkai yaavum' is from a balumahendra movie starring tyagarajan, radhika - neengal kettavai.
the original is composed (i think) by shankar jaikishen from the Manoj Kumar hit, upkar, the original goes...'kasme vaade...'.
this is a case of (damn it) note to note copying, something like what deva occasionally does!

Many of the songs I mentioned are not 100% lifts but are derived from the original.
Ex
'veettukku veettukku vAsappadi vEnum' phrase is opening of first movement of Mozart's 25th symphony. After that the song follows a totally different path. (Not that anybody can copy a symphony 100% and make a tamil song with pallavi/anupallavi/saranam.)
Ditto with chittukkuruvi vetkappadudhu - based on a small opening piece of Dvorak's New World Symphony (third movement) but developed in a new manner. 80% of the pallavi is derived, rest is different. Big difference : the symphony is melodic while the song is mostly a rhythimic dance track.
None of the songs are completely copied : but nevertheless they have their source outside of rAjA and as HCIRFans it is our duty to acknowledge that.

Dear Karthik, the "kasme vade" song has been discussed enough - it was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji and the tune was given to IR in exchange for "Ilaya nila" from Payanangal Mudivadhillai which KA used in Kalaakar for the song "Nile nile ambar par" sung by Kishore Kumar...
So, it is not a case of note-to-note copy like Deva - instead it was mutual exchange for another tune of IR

Will it be possible for you to authenticate your claim?
Any resources?
Thanks.
