For a good understanding of how to approach this ongoing symposium, please refer to the thread, "Kannadhaasan Vs. Vairamuthu TFM Symposium Topic 1:Iyarkai Varnanai" before you post. Let me reiterate that this is not a patti mandram, but
a research symposium.
Please show TFM examples of both poets with regards to just theirVaarththai Prayoagam for this thread. By vaarththai prayoagam, we mean captivating use of language, word play, different use of a known word, vocabulary, etc. Please provide the name of the song whose lines you excerpt and the name of the movie if known.

When it comes to word play in lyrics, I think VM is under some virtual pressure that makes him not make a good use of his poetic wisdom. The industry is going thru a crisis today for want of lyrical taste blended with linguistic ingredients of the theme. VM, as being a key player in TFM lyrics today, has to maintain the status quo by bringing stuff that the producers and MD's will be able to sell. Otherwise, he will be forced to close down shutters like others did in the past.
Also there is another factor which would give absolutely no room for improvisation in the lyrics is the URGENCY. I have heared many stories about VM delivering song over the phone (kizhakku seemayilE). How can one possibly look for quality in lyrics when you give him/her just 10 min? Obviously VM is not pressing himself to be choosy about the content of the song in some situations.
When the fact remains that not many movies or situations demand for an enchanting lyrics, VM always responded well when it comes to Tamil Folk songs.
"antha kazhuththu thEmalaiyum kathOra machchaththaiyum pArpatheppO?
antha kolusu manisirippum kumri iLanchirippum kEtpatheppO?
karuvELan kattukuLLE karichAn kuruvi onnu
suthi(sruthi)mARi kaththuthammA thonaiyathAn kAnOminnu"
from the song "rAsAthee onnenaipu nenjukkuLLe..." (thirudA thirudA)
Look at the choice of words in the first lines to desrcibe the woman the hero loves. It is so natural in the sense that even though thEmal is considered a bad symbol on woman's beauty (also a disease), he is able
to see his own regard to that spot. Also VM is very very natural in using the word 'suthi' instead of 'sruthi'. ( I know 'kAtRu' was once pronounced as 'kaththu' by renowned poet)
Also I like the interlude chorus in this song
"kadala kattukkuLLa kaiyadichu sonna puLLa
kathula ezhuthanum pombalainga sonna solla"
I have no words to praise these lines, all I can say in support of VM is ,
" oru pAnai sotRukku oru soRu patham "
There was a pre-IR era when folk language were rarely being used in TFM songs. Even when they were used , they were very sporadic instances. I know one famous tamizh song which was stamped as a folk song in those days
'yErik karai mElE pORavaLE pen mayilE
nillu konjan nAnum vArEn'
In today's standards I cannot accept this as a real folk song. Then there was a post-IR era , that is, TFM after IR/BR started to revolutionize the Tamil Films, when village and folk language were more easily used and accepted. When VM came in to picture, he started giving a new dimension to the TFM with his mesmerized lyrics. He taught the TFM what a true folk language is and how one can portray village life thruogh lyrics. 'muthal mariyAthai', 'manVsanai', is another good example of village story-folk language- lyrics. Since then VM has always added value to TFM with his own style. Among the others, many followed his style, and some could not survive.

With respect to VM's varthai prayogam
the following songs come to my mind,
In kaathal Oviyam,
these lines are extremely good.
"Thirumugam vanthu pazhuguvor,
Arimugam seythu vilaguvor,
vizhigalil thuligal vazhiyumo,
athu suduvathai thanga mudiyumo".
In Ninaivellam nithya, in Panivizhum malarvanam"
this line seems to be too good to hear.
"Kaigal Idaithanil nelilgaiyil Idaiveli kuraigayil Eriyum vilakku sirithu kangal moodum"
And in kokkarakko, the song.
Geetham , sangeetham nee thane en kathal vedham,
padham unthan padham , ennodu vanthale pothum epoothum(Geetham)
I dont remember the whole song, but the song describes his lover. One line in this songs is
"Pavai patham parkkave, kooonthal neendu vanthatho
Unnai nan kandale undagum veppam, neethane anantha theppam"

About kannadasan's varthai prayogam,
I feel this song is quite apt,
"Athikkai Kai kai , alangai vennilave
ithikkai kayathe, ennai pol pennallavo."
There is one line in this song, which is too good
solvathellam vilangayo, thuthuvalangai vennila,
ennai nee kayathe, ennuyirum neeyallavo

Again back to VM's varthai prayogam,
In the song, ilaiya nila pozhigirathu,
the lines,
Varum vazhiyil pani mazhaiyil paruva nila thinam mayangum,
mugil eduthu mugam thudaithu vidiyum varai nadai pazhagum,
Neela vanile velli odaigal, paduginrathe enna jadaigal,
vinveliyil vithaithathu yar navamanigal.

Coming back to KD's varthai prayogam,
in the movie ethirneechal.
Malayil santhithen mayalil sinthithen
mangai nan kannithen Kathalan theendum pothu kaigalai mannithen
Thamarai kannangal, then malar kinnangal,
ethanai vannangal, mothamai theendumpothu....
And another song by PBS from a different movie,
goes like this.
Poovaraiyum poongodiye, poomalai soodava,
ponmagale vazhgavendru paamalai paadava...
Kannamenum kinnathile, vannangalai kuzhaithaye,
pongi varum pun sirippil , konjam konjam therithaye,
uruvangal marividum, ullangam maraiyathee...

In Ninaivellaam Nithya, VM described being together in good and bad times as follows:
'Vasanthangal vaazhthi varum pothu un kilaiyil poovaaven,
Ilaiyuthir kaalam varm pothu unakku veraaven'
In Jeans, VM's famous 'rettai kizhavi',
'salasala salasala rettai kizhavi
takataka takataka rettai kizhavi
undallo tamilil undallo
pirithu vaithaal porulum illai
pirithu vaithal niyam illai....'
What an example for describing the lovers...
Great !
