  Guys - please give me a link for the song "Manam Virumbuthe Unnai" - I listened to it briefly yesterday and I thought the entire song piece sung by harini was in Gambeera Naattai (atleast 98%) - excluding the interludes - and the most prominent phrase in that song "Ri3 Ga3 Ma1 Ri3 Ri3 Sa" which is used a lot tells me that it is a combo of ChalaNaattai and gambeeranaattai which happens to be a chalanaattai janyam...
  
  I did notice that other notes creeped in - I wanna listen again to see what those other notes are...
  
  I did see that some people opine that this song is in Kedharam - why do you think so? Going by the main piece it is not Kedharam .. although there is an occasional Ri2.. but that alone is not enuf to categorize this song under Kedharam - your comments/thoughts please..... Vidhya??

  I agree with rajesh's post - calling it a mix - Ri2 is creeping in but that is not used a whole lot to call this kedharam... comments please....

  This is my observation - Ri2 creeps in in the following places and Ni2 once and dha2 a few times
  
  
  urangaamale kannum kannum - the second Kannum - Sa Ni3 dha2 Ni3 Ri2 Sa...
  
  Manam Virumbuthe Unnai Unnai - after first charanam - the second unnai is exactly like kannum as above
  
  Puyal vandhu Ponadhada - Ri2 creeps in again
  manam Enguthe - Sa Ni Ri2 sa ni Pa ... (humming)
  
  Before second charanam - Tha Thi Tha gathi tha thiththa thaga thi Thaaaa - that tha is Ni2
  
  Chat endru Salanam varum - Ri2 again
  En Kaadhala - Ri2 in hummin again...
  
  As I posted before - Ri3 is obvious in most interludes...
  
  but the main song still is gambeera/chala naattaish - except for these usages of other notes...

  unnikrishnan has clearly sung "rAma rAma rAma seetha"(tilang) with N3.
  what do u say for this now.......

  What is the raaga for
  Naan oru Kuzhanthai nee oru kuzhanthai (padagOtti) - TMS
  
  Kaalai paniyil - Gayathri - Sujatha
  
  Both songs seem to use

  Thilang: Sl that is the most common scale for Thilang - I cannot conclude that that is the only scale but Thilang in any version would take 2 Nis

  Thanks IR...in the case 'Oru NaaL iravu' from 'Kaviyathalaivi' is in Rasikapriya. ISSUE RESOLVED !!!! There was a Hindi song I heard set to the same raag, 'thum jO mil gayE hO, thO yeh lagtha haai..' from 'Haste zakhm' by Mohd. Rafi. IR, check out on my other questions as well. TIA.

  I think IR is right on Tilang and to my knowledge it does have two Ni's, thus "Innum Ennai.." can be only Tilang and not Gambhira Nattai....right?

  ravi68, M1 => G3

  if u are talking of film songs in malahari,then i do not know;but there is a classical song--(of course other than "lambodhara"..etc!)--it is "panchamAtanga"-nice song.

  I think the song Naan oru kuahandhai, Nee oru kuahandhai from the film Padakotti sounds more like Ragan Bageswari. Even songs Naalam, Naalam thiru Naalam from Kathalika Neram illai; Nee Ennna sonnalum kavithi from Netru Indru Nallai;Manikka theril, Marakatha Kalasam from film Thedi Vantha Mappilai-all are MGR films are based on ragam Bageswari.   I have tried to identify the ragas for some of the songs - for ex. I have classifed puththam puthu pU pUththadho from thaLapathi under Poorvikalyani, but I am not sure. Any feedback would be appreciated.
