IR/Vasu
'Kaatre en vaasal' looks like darabari kanada.
In charanam, i see 'ni2 dha2 ni2 dha2 ni2' in 'nedungalam sirpikulle', which looks like darbari kanada. is that right ?
my guesses in other songs:
nathiye nathiye - ananda bhairavi
nilame poru nilame - nata bhairavi/abheri
Please confirm.

IR,
in www.themusicmagazine.com they have listed 'ninnai charan' as puriya dhanashri which is Hamsaanandhi.i thought so too. is it panthuvaraali?
- From: IR (@ 63.16.71.78)
on: Wed Sep 27 17:46:44 EDT 2000
vijay: it could be very well puriya dhanashree which is a panthuvarali janyam and takes all the notes in Panthuvarali in a vakra manner (zig-zag).
Pa; Ma Ga - Ma Ga ri ri Sa;
Nin Nai.. Cha Ra Na dain Dhen
( Ma Ga Ma ga ri is a typical prayoga in PD)
It cannot be Hamsanandhi as it takes dha1.
I love this piece... Hats off to Bombay Jayshree

Guys, what are some of the other film songs by Bombay jayashree besides Ninnai Charanadaindhen, Narumugaye and a tiny bit in En penn endru pirandhaai ?

on: Thu Sep 28 10:44:29 EDT 2000
IMO, she has more melody in her voice than Nithyashree who is more talented than BJ when it comes to carnatic music...

Ragapriyan: in the lines "puyal vandhu ponadhoru vanamaai". Ri2 is used. It is kedhaaram.

Vidhya/Ragapriyan,
we had a big discussion on manam virumbuthe, some time back. Pallavi looks like Gambeera nattai to me and the charanam has R2 in it. so, it should be kedaram. probably, it's again a mix.

...and about the hamsanaadam discussion,to my
knowledge, these days, the swaram DA is not permitted(i believe seshagopaalan even announced this in 1 of his "kutcheris").
the hindustani equivalent of this is"shuddha saarang" in which DA,MA1,the other NI are all used .-you guys MUST check out chitra's & ustad sultan khan's(the saarangi player in "snehidane")new album "piya basanti"-which has a song in shuddha saarang-its amazing!

sindhuja,
regarding Hamsanadam, this is what Hari Govindan mentioned once in a mail he had written to me:
"ilakkaNam mARudho's raga is a version of hamsanadam. I know that the standard hamsanadam is sa ri2 ma2 pa, ni3 sa. But actually the popular version of hamsanadam officially is called skandamanorama (or something similar to it.) The original hamsanadam, derived from the 60th nitimati has both ni's in it. Another version of hamsanadam replaces the komal ni with dha 2. And that is the version in the song ilakanam. There is a similar scale with
generous mixing of both ma's in a song from the malayalam movie Kaveri (music by IR along with Dakshinamoorthy)."
BTW, all TFM-fans participating in this thread, I would be grateful if you visit my homepage and mail me your comments. I have recently added several songs (all IR compositions) and I have to admit that I am not able to identify all the ragas correctly.

ramaswaami,
thanx for the info.
BTW,can u enlighten me on the raagam "sumanesa ranjani"?--i can't remember either the name of the film nor the starting of this song--arvind swamy singing for revathi's birthday(with a guitar-to be more precise)i think it starts with the word "nalam"--i think this song is in the raagam mentioned above.priya sisters have also rendered "ninnai charanadainden"in this raagam-(the prob. is the raagams aren't mentioned in this casette) i wanna be sure of the name of the raagam.

.......i forgot to add on......
the raagam is defined by-sa ga2(as in kaanadaa)ma2 pa ni2(as in harikAmbodhi) and thus, i guess is a janyam of shanmukhapriyA
so,........what i want is, the NAME of this raagam.

Nalam vaazha - I think it also has m1 and d1 creeping in pallavi. So it cant be pure sumanesa ranjani.

nalam vaazha also has n3 in its charanam. If you take n2 as d3 you can more or less call the song is based on raga Nitimati. (except for the m1)

i was thoroughly surprised on seeing the song "innum ennai yanna seya pogiraay"(singaara velan)under gambheera naattai in the "raagaas of film songs"page in this site.i strongly feel it is tilang--someone please explain.
isn't tilang defined by sa ga3 ma1 pa ni3 sa;sa ni2 pa ma1 ga3 sa?
- From: SL (@ 63.253.7.13)
on: Tue Oct 3 23:53:37 EDT 2000
Sinduja, 'innum...' is in Gambeera Nattai alright. Tilang has a N2 not N3.It is a janya of Hari Kambhoji. If there is another version/common usage that includes N3 also, I am not aware of it.
