Rahman's AVMAX interview....

Hi everybody. I have taken the pain of typing up this very long and very good interview of Rahman's that came on AVMAX on their first ever issue this month. It's a cover story(interview) on Rahman and he has given some really great answers. Read the interview!

  Naveen and Swamiji, you guys are probably right. I was recollecting from memory (erroneously)having heard it only once when I bought a gift for my then fiance (now wife). 25th goes like veettukku veedu vAsappadi song by IR, 40th is my cell phone tone and Eine Kliene Nachtmusik is the other one I guess :) .   I don't think there should be any debate about whether ARR lifted a tune from Mozart for the Titan ad....the Ad industry creative department works along the lines of substituting familiar sounds, images and words that represent a certain occassion, event or product.
  
  For those of you who are techies, I'd like to draw this similie....ARR composing is like Object Oriented Programming...readymade sounds and stuff are used to create the final composition. Maybe IR composing can be compared to the older school of structured programmng.
  
  Well, if ARR had claimed that he had "composed" the tune, then he can be sued otherwise there is no reason for any controversy here.

  The amount of code you write with OOP is very less :)

  ARRehman is the best there was,the best there is and the best there ever will be..I think the Raja family should shut their mouth while talking about ARR..I think Karthik raja is totally useless.Yuvan shakar raja is quite ok..They are all jealous of ARR.ARR is the GOD of music..

  This is unrelated to the discussion questions, but i think it MUST NOT go unnoticed that ARR has brought variety to
  the music industry in general, particularly to the tamil film industry. He has given starving but talented artists a chance.
  But for him, we would have two-ok, may be four!-singers monopolizing the industry! And he certainly has an uncanny
  ability to pick the perfect voice for each song. And every other so-called music director comes along and manages to
  mess it up royally, although i am sure they think they are being very clever having a different singer sing each song. Ok, let me
  not go around trashing other Music Directors, that's not exactly fair. I am sure it takes a lot of work to be a MD, period.
  The point is that ARR deserves to be commended a thousand times over for setting that one trend alone.

  Good insight Priya....and Nesh..pls don't go saying that he is more of a sound engineer than a composer...I'm tired of explaining the difference...maybe I should keep standard arguements at hand and Ctrl C and Ctrl V when required !

  I feel the biggest blunder in his life and treachery AR Rahman did to TFM was to bring Sukwinder Singh to Tamil. I cant stand his voice. and look whats happened now. Every other MD, has a song for Sukwinder in each of their movies.
  IMHO.
  Everytime I listen to sukwinder in tfm, I curse rahman for that. Its Sukwinder Mania in TFM now.

  Whats the point of being a out-of-the-world composer if one doesnt know how to engineer the song perfectly and present it to the common listener who dont care about the song's structure et al but just wants to enjoy?
  Being so knowledgeable in sound eng.. gives rahman a definite edge over the others.

  Take Karthik Raja for eg. His songs are too noisy and eventually u start hating the md for that (like I cant stand him). Maybe his tunes are good but he cant bring it out onto a CD for a common listener. Most of his songs look cluttered and completely out-of-sync. I am not a techno-guy, so I cant differentiate between the various layers of music etc. All i can hear is noise. The finest eg. would be Amul Baby from Vanchinathan. and almost all of the songs from Naam Iruvar Namakku iruvar. He has improved in dumm*3 though. AT last i could make out who the singer was and what they were singing under karthik's md-ship in a long time. All this is IMHO. I know there would be a lot of Karthik fans here to cry foul.   sukwinder singh is one of the good things to happen in HFM but a sad and a bad thing to have happened in TFM. I hold ARR responsible for his evolution in TFM as he was the bhramma for SS's bearth in TFM.
  
  But, I see lost of songs of SS in telugu channels. How is he in telugu?

  Travis..yes I also have similar gripes about recording in KR's albums. YSR does a very fine job in this respect. BTW, Dum*3 was very well done, especially that rock song.

  i feel ar rahman must not waste his time answering to such tiny tots.he is a great person and he has to answer only sensible questions.when the children are old enough they will understand things until then who are they tp find faults in a great composer like rahman?

  When I listen to ARR, I can feel the way his mind works. He is a genius and eccentricity is a part of that. Some times he can completely goof up in the way the song is laid out and sometimes it can be grand. He is always innovating and there is nothing trite or ordinary about his songs.
  On the other hand YSR, I think is a good and upcoming MD who produces fine and above average music. I can see him giving ARR a hard fight.
  All of this is very good for TFM though.
