numtv subscribers, you can view the entire interview with Fr.Gasper on JayaTV in the Jaya TV archives section of the numtv.com website dated August 23. The programme would be arhcived usually for 10 days. Fr. Jegath was impressive to say the least, explaining the details of the project with relevant verses and with heart-felt emotion.

I am listing here a few points from his interview for the benefit of those who didnt get to watch it. This is just a rough translation. Some of the facts he mentioned are details which we already know but I am reproducing them anyways.
Why Thiruvasagam and not any other great Tamil literature? He answers:
1. The verses themselves that are written in high-quality Tamil and bring out the most emotions(he cites verses to illustrate the effect)
2. The fact that Thiruvasagam, several hundred years back, had already hinted at One-God concept when secularism is currently considered a mark of progressive society
3. The meaning of the verses which brings man closer to the supreme being without emphasizing the need for any mediators/messengers
why symphony format and not the usual ICM style?
Fr. Gasper actually sings the Kalyani raga and mentions the equivalent western scale and how the nuances(gamakams etc.) present in ICM hasnt been appreciated worldwide because of lack of a proper written format to express those and he explains that's where someone like IR enters to fill the void. He also mentions that he couldnt think of anyone else in India who could do what IR was doing. He also assured the audience that they need not be afraid that Thiruvasagam in western format meant either rock'n'roll or disco or some such genre being used for the verses. He said that was certainly not the case. He assures that the sanctity of the verses wouldnt be spoilt even a bit. He also said that there is a possibility that this work could be played in great concert halls all over the world in the future. He doesnt say that this will happen with certainity but emphasized that there IS a possibility that something like this could happen and hence such an effort stands justified.
100 chorus singers are being used and even the singing is structured in a symphony format.
The scoresheet's flawlessness was appreciated by all the Hungary musicians (as to how this guy from a totally different culture/country is able to compose and write something like this).
He gets emotional while talking about this. Appreciates IR's dedication and hard work.
Amongst the challenges he faced he mentioned his inexperince in fund-raising and the pain every time someone dismissed his requests. He also sounded sincere when he mentioned moments of self-doubt when he wondered as to whether this whole project was really necessary. Also his own doubts as to how Thiruvasagam would sound in symphony format. But then he assured again that there wouldnt be anything to worry. He also thanks everyone who contributed. He also requests everyone to be supportive of this project as its success would mean continuous efforts to bring ThirukuraL and other great literature in a similar format.Part of the proceeds would also be used to set up a music academy.
Amidst severe financial difficulties, all efforts are being taken to get the work released before Oct 15th.

Now, look at this write-up!
He (Fr. Jegath) fell in love with Manicka vasagar's Thiruvasagam. He wanted Thiruvasagam should be sung with symphony archestra.
He chose Ilayaraja to make this Thiruvasaga symphony. They have spent more than a crore of rupees. The composing has been done in Hungary and singapore for a total 35 days.
It appears as though IR was commisioned by Fr. Jegath to do this work! How unfair??

TIS team, could you please clarify as to whose idea was it? Did Fr. Jagath commission IR to do this work or was it IR who came up with the idea and Tamil Mayyam supported it?

Rasiga,
I don't think you should be offended even if IR was called in only as a technician and not as the pioneer for this venture...I think it is a `world thamizh maiyam' project (an org to which Jegath belongs)...
It's also possible that the idea to launch such a project originated by both the Maiyam and IR together...Alternatively IR proposed and Maiyam accepted or vice versa...
Whatever it may be, the quality of the final product is what music listeners should be interested in, IMHO...
If a cheapie film producer with no concern for literature, culture, social conciousness etc. but purely commercial motives can `commission' IR (simply because he has money), why not a thamizh org, even though it has to rely on contributions from public for money?
If Jegath tries to get personal publicity in the game too, what's wrong? In any case for all the hard work (beg-borrow-finance), he deserves it at least as much as a Raj Kiran:-)
To put in other words, we should look at this project more as a `musical contribution' from IR rather than a publicity venture like Rajagopuram...except that it is not all too commercial like a filmi or non-filmi album but a kind of community project...in any case the focus should be on music, at least from the TFMDF point of view...

TiS was conceived by IIR.
Tamil maiyam gave life to it.
No 'commision' involved here!
Rest easy and relax and enjoy the music!
Don't resort to speculations and assumptions.

To my knowledge, nothing of that sort. As we have repeatedly stressed in these columns, the entire project depends on US! Fr. is trying very hard to come up with the 20 lakhs or so rupees to get the Indian end of recording get done. He is still not close to it. Once it is done, then the US team has the committment of a $16K committment for the mixing and master tape making. Then, the CD making, marketing etc will kick in and hence the Oct 15th is a reasonable release date. That's all. It may be earlier but definitely not LATER! That much we can assure you. The need for interested people to go to Sulekha.com to make their contributions is now and it cannot be further stressed more. PLEASE!! THANK YOU!! YIA!!!
