Do you know he is considered a genius for many reasons, the primary reason being his substantial contributions to the analytical theory of numbers and his works on elliptic functions, continued fractions, and infinite series?

thats what all i was saying.
btw to support me you do not have to be a "dogmatix". mine wud at the surface be sound like cacaphonix. a careful reading wud reveal it as harmonix.

--- I think it is worth paying that to all the talented technicians of the west, so that this work is impeccably not only musically, but technically as well.
Yes, I think this is the first time IR has gone for a good technical crew (Sound engineer Richard King etc..). He should have done this long time ago (I mean from 1992-93) for his tamil albums. I hope he does something in this department for his future tf albums.

I think the strenght of Indian music used to be just that non-reliance on technology upto the age of MSV. That is why MSV used less orchestration and focussed on Melody. IR enhanced the experience like a 3D film with orchestrational ideas in the interludes etc...
I am a believer for a composer like IR (who is one and only, i don't think there will be another one with this 3D view of music) the likes of Richard King is a necessity, I even feel that from Annakkilli, all songs should be somehow re-recorded with Grammy Awarded Soudn Enegineers and with the original singers (who are still around) by IR' sons, especially Karthik, who has an indisputable sense of orchestration only next to his father. That is a lifetime work for KR.
For this project, you need a multimillionaire to sponsor.

Re-working all IR songs is an overkill. Some 200-300 selected songs would do. Also, many songs from the 60s deserve re-working as the mono recording back then didnt probably do full justice to the compositions. (Varavendum orupozhudhu is one song that I would like to see re-worked along with Yaar andha nilavu. But the original singers would be missed badly).IRs problem in the early 80s was not as much recording as it was finding talented musicians who could play his song's parts flawlessly. He has mentioned this before.
As for reading/writing score sheets I agree with Kupps. Its a basic skill possessed by most serious WCM composers.Since IR intended to be one, he developed that skill. That by itself doesnt make him or anyone else a genius.

"Since IR intended to be one, he developed that skill."
Agree that doesn't make one genius but come to think of a guy from a remote village with no education and musical background, instantly mastering such a difficult technique...... that is posiible ONLY for a genius.....nay...born-genius!
Thank you, 'Vijay', for pointing this out!

It is supposed that Beethovan and IR are part of a select few who can write notes without playing a single note of music. Maybe its genius to comprehend how music sounds in cohesion with other instruments without even listening either instrument playing solo and even calculating the exact timing of where an instrument should start and stop without a digital clock like precision!
And maybe even, genius is knowing what music tugs the hearts of people and creating music that is so sympathetic to peoples feelings that the only way to describe IR's music is "soul" music.

Note Man ,
this is not TRUE . My Piano teacher tells me that it is no surprise that big composers can write the score without playing it . But i feel eths speciality of IR is the speed in which a music flashes in his mind when he composes .That is something which is not a resultant of music practice alone ..

SSSAV, he didnt "instantly" master it, he learned it the hard way for several years(even when he was an assistant to several MDs) and came up which is more laudable in my opinion. IR said that he used to make a lot of mistakes in notations initially and used to get laughed at. So you can see from where to where he has come.
Note man, many contemporary WCM composers(not just Bethoven) can do the things that you are talking about. Even amongst Indian musicians I believe L. Subramaniam and a few others can do it.

for those who missed the interview with Fr. Jegath on Jaya TV on Monday, you can tune in to Sun TV (Vanakkam Thamizhagam) on Tuesday morning...

Today morning, I watched Fr.Jegath Gaspar's interview on SUN TV's Vanakkam Thamilagam. The interview started with the question on 'Thiruvaasagam in Symphony' by our 'Maestro' Dr.Ilayaraja. From the detailed explanation on the project given by Fr.Jegath, I could able to perceive the genuine interest Father has been showing in this project. In between he narrated few verses from Thiruvasagam. This is the first time I'm hearing this, as I hardly show any interest in literature. It is really nice to hear the first time itself. I couldn't imagine how it will be with the grand musical score orchestrated with the Hungary Symphony orchestra wirtten and composed by Ilayaraja Sir. Eagerly awaiting the release of this album.
Definitely this is a wonderful effort ever taken to propagate and popularize our rich literature and music to the western world and it's going to be a treaure for the future generations. Thiruvasagam is an ideal choice to be selected for this musical composition. I'm sure it's going to evoke great response from all quarters of the world.
Hard and sincere efforts will always lead to great success. My best wishes and Congratulations to our Maestro Ilayaraja, Fr.Jegath gaspar and his team towards bringing this project into a reality. This project is going to be a testimony of our culture, tradition and literature in a musical form.
PS: A Request to the TIS team:
If possible, arrange for more such televised interviews, curtain raisers about TIS during weekends(especially Sunday) and on festival days. I think, in the first week of September there is a festival coming. I think all the major satellite television may announce some special pragrams. If a curtain raiser is shown during these festival programs, it will reach more people and evoke greater response and awareness of this sincere effort. I know it's not a commercial album. But still everybody should be benefitted of this wonderful effort taken towards bringing in peace & harmony through such classical compositions.

You are correct, 'harris'! The mess-up started last night itself in the midst of 'annaamalai' serial and after a commercial break, they were showing some parts of Vanakkam Thamizhagam'[God knows what date's!] with poor audio and vedio quality . and I didn't watch this morning. It appears that last night's problem still continued!
I will be getting an on-line version very soon and will post it at the tis-usa.com site and will inform here too. Thanks.
