Hi!
I just want to know if any music directors have a fad for a particular Ragam. The one MD who comes to my mind is ARR who uses Kapi,Ananda Bhairavi,Shankarabharanam and the like in almost all his films.

Guys, You've barely scratched the surface on this topic. After listing a bunch of songs by IR and a few by MSV, the discussion turned into the nuances of the specific ragam use in a song(I certainly don't object to this, this is great in fact). Can we get back to discussing other MDs like KVM, GR, Vidhyasaagar, ARR, VKumar and go down the list and discuss their favorite ragams?

A lot of songs of the late fifties and sixties (when MSV and KVM peaked) may not fall under any particular ragam probably because the lyrics were composed first, the main problem (??) might have been encountering words/metres of various lengths/types within the same song.
I noticed that Kannada/Telugu composers had some affinity towards Bhimplas/Abheri. Vijaybhaskar composed some songs which had shades of Abheri like 'Anbu meghame ingu odiva' , 'MaNi viLakke' (Unnaithaan thambi) and scores of other Kannada songs. Ghantasala (he was a composer too!!) composed several telugu songs in Abheri, but depended on Mohanam/Kalyani for romantic/positive songs like 'Aaha inba nilavinile'(Maya Bazaar),' Engume aanantham ananthame jeevanin magarantham' (movie ??). S.Rajeshwara Rao's most popular "Abheri's" were "Oho VeNNilave","Suyanalam peritha pothunalam peritha". We all know SMS's magnum opus 'Singaravelane deva'.
Adi Narayana Rao,I am sure felt very comfortable with Hindolam, he composed some of the greatest tunes ever in this ragam, eg:- Azhaikkaathe Ninaikkathe (maNalane Mangayin baaggiyam), KaNgalum kavi paduthe (adutha veettu peNN), Rajasekhara Yenmel (Anarkali) (This song is one of the very best and outshines Naushad's Man Tarpat hari Darshan in Baiju Bawra).
Hard to say what was KVM's and VK's favourite ragams, though they have composed several melodies in Kalyani.eg:- KVM - Naan anuppuvathu Kaditham alla, Koonthalukku malar thoduthaaL (superb number) and ofcourse mannavan vanthanadi.
VK - Sapthaswaram punnagayil with some deviations,Engellam vaLayosai ketkindratho etc.
GR used various ragams like GowLai, Kalyani, Charukesi, Maand. I have mentioned his Kalyanis and Charukesis in the earlier discussions. His usage of Maand was in 'Ulavum thendral kaatrinile','Maasila nilave nam' (pallavi and the 1st stanza).

I believe AR Rahman likes Neelaambari a lot... He has used it in BGM, Preludes and as Main songs... (e.g., ESK- theendai, GM- en veettu thottathil etc...) Anybody would like to explore this and list the other instances ?

thatts, En veetu thotathil is based on senjuritti :).
Is Nila kaigiradhu (indira) based on maand? It seems to be ARR's fav. Nila kaigiradhu, suthi suthi, and a recent song in KD, and Thendrale thendrale.. mella nee veesu.. in Kaadal Desam are all based on the same raaga. (I dont want to get into the debate on recylcing here :))

Chandy, the opening humming in 'en veettu thottathil' sounds like a neelambari to me :-)
BTW In my previous posting typo: 'thirakkaadha kaattukulle' instead of 'theendaay'.

Hi chandy,
Nila Kaigirathu shows Prathi Madhyamam and hence is like Behag+Kalyani+....?
I think Anjali.. Anjali (Duet) is in Maand as is Nenjam Marapathillai .
ARR has given Kalyani? in Kaadhal Niagara
from ESK. Someone please confirm it.
Bye

Dr Bhanumathy once had a discussion with IR (in late 70's, published in either Kumudam or AV) wherein she has observed that a no. of his songs are based on Mohanam & even suggested that he names his recent child `mohan(a)'!! Can someone highlight the IR songs based on this raaga?

Some more Keeravani songs by IR: Nee Thaane Nee Thane (ThalAttu PAdava)
Kanne Indru (Prashant starrer)
Pani Vizhum Pozhudil (Mouna RAgam)
Endhan Kannil Aezhulagangal (Guru)... not very pure though.
I just realised that 'Thanni Thotti' from the film Sindhu Bhairavi is also set to Keeravani.
Amazing!
Keeravani's close cousin Gowri Manohari was also excellently used by IR, though not very frequently: Sample these:
1. Dhoorathil Naan Kanda Un Mukham (Nizhalgal)
2. Thaazhamboove Kannurangu (?)
Pon VAnam Panneer Thoovudu Inneram (Indru Nee NAlai NAn)... one of my most favorite SJ numbers!!!!!!
3. PAdum VAnambAdi (NAn PAdum PAdal)
4. Kanna VaruvAya (Manadhil Urudi Vendum)
5. SOlaip Poovil MAlai Thendral (Anbulla Rajnikant?)
Gowri Manohari was sparingly, but imaginatively used by MDs like KVM and MSV.
Gowri Manohariyai KaNden (Mazhalaip Pattaalam)
The best Gowri Manohari song IMO, is from Thiruvilayaadal: PAttum NAne BhAvamum NAne. What a composition and what a rendering by TMS!

Neels,
Is the song "thanni thotti" not based on Kapi?
- From: Sriram Lakshman (@ ifmxlenx.na.informix.com)
on: Tue Jun 1 16:12:34 EDT 1999
Neels,Saketh, Thanni Thotti is based on Kapi, just like the certain parts of 'adi yennadi rakkamma' .To me MSV's usage of Gowri Manohari was superb, 'Malare Kurinji malare'- DR.Siva ,'Aalayam aagum mangai manathu'-Sumathi Yen Sundari , what wonderfully varied usage of the same raag in the 2 songs!! Similary the pallavi, anupallavi of 'Ammamma keLadi thozhi' (karuppu PaNam) and 'moondu thamizh thondriyathum unnidamo' (piLLayo piLLai) are set to Charukesi with great variations.

Sriram,
I dont think MSV has done full justice to Gowrimanohari at all. Has he given 5 or six songs in that raga? I think at least 3 of them sound similar - gowri manohariyaik kanden (mazhalaip pattaalam), gowri manohari nI varuga (mirudanga chakravarthy), aahaayam kaaNaadha sooryodhayam (aalaya dheepam?) all sound similar. IR has at least made each gowrimanohari of his sound different (in fact this applies to IR's handling of any raga - keeravani, madhyamavathi, charukesi, hamsanadham, sudhdha dhanyasi etc.) Leave it to mottai to present a raga in a different form every time :-)

G R sir, you are back. Excellent. Welcome back. But, the best gowrimanohari melodies come from MSV (Malare Kurunji Malarey and I think Ninaivale silai saythu unakkagu vaithen...)
