bb: Great! This was my prayer song in high school along with Pitha pirai choodi and Madhar pirai kanniyanai. You have moved from Silappadikaram to Tevaram. What next- Tiruvacakam, Tiruppaavai, Tiruppugazh....? I hope you find these in movies. Thanks for taking me back to school years.

Saravanan,
Read your wonderful write-up on 'Comrade' MBS. You know what, I made a request elsewhere on his choir songs not long before in this site. I have heard him perform with his choir at Madurai Kamaraj University, and it was a wonderful experience to listen to his choir which had patriotism as the theme ("anumathiyOm, anumathiyOm, nAttai thundAda anumathiyOm..." is still in my memory). Did he commercially release those choir songs ? If so, do you have them ?
BB,
Thanks for the great songs in this thread; more than that, I should thank you for the related info, some of which are very delightful to read.

era.murukan, reading your short commentary - especially in the words - Mannil kaal pathithu nadandha oru arivu jeevi koottam -
I found the secret to great writing - just make every word count!!! DOnt write phrases, they will often be cliches and not your thoughts. Write words, one at a time.. one at a time.

era.mu, thanks for your comments.
Da Vinci, I don't think MBS' choir songs were commercially released (now, wouldn't that be a contradiction?). I've not seen them anywhere as such.

era.murukan Sir, thanks! The song does evoke a rare feeling of rapture--and you have wonderfully captured the essence of that bliss in your appreciation.
Da Vinci, I too have never heard of any commercial release of MBS' choir songs. The memory of watching 'Jaya perigai kottada' on TV as a child is still fresh in my mind.

Saravanan
thanks for this great song( and also for playing it to me on the mobile while W32blaster took care of my computer).
While the write up on MBS was superb, the one on L vijayalashmi leaves me stunned.God!I remember my saga on how almost i had plans to reach Kumudam Prarthanai club to pass my CA.She was a good looking, talented dancer.A wonderful cameo in Ooti varai Uravu and the legendary "Aadaludan".How many hidden talents people have?
My admiration towards SJ is growing with everyone of your selections.Though mildly screechy at times, the pronounciation is impeccable for a 19 year old Telugu girl from Rajamundry.(The same feeling I had when i heard the Karumbu song by KJY.) This song is beautifully tuned as well. The raaga looks to be Purva(i)Kalyani another Gamanasrama derivative like Hamsanandhi. This one is a Sandhaya Raga and also used in operas like Ramanatakam for singing "Iyarkai Varnanai".So how apt of MBS to have chosen it for "Maasil Veenayum,Maalai madhiyamum".Wonderful.MBS has almost a viswaroopam in my heart after me knowing the man behind MBS thru your posts. The problem with communism is that some of the communists remained human and had their hearts in place!
I wish your posts be read by someone from MBS family and LV herself.
(I cant leave out my MSV on this! This raga is for bringing in the mood of loneliness too.No wonder he has it for "Nadhamayaman iraiva " in Mridanga Chakravarthy" and there is also the Namasivaya connection)

Song of the Day: yaar antha nilavu from Shanthi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/yaarantha.rm
- Sung wonderfully by TMS. MD are Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy and lyrics by Kannadasan.
- Lyrics in our PPP page: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/yaar.html
- The song resembles a western number, even TMS' singing is stylized and laid-back. Is the song set in Saarangaa?
- The song brings us an image of Sivaji nonchalantly smoking, reminiscing on life. Chandramouli felt the same way, he wrote in a thread:
But for me I get back my memories of the childhood days I used to spend in Chengilput back in the 1978-1980 when there was no TV and VividhBharathi was the only entertainment . I once heard that song early in the morning and fell to sleep again. There is one more song that fascinated me more than the song itself the picturisation of it. The song is "Yaar andha nilavu". I started to feel one with Shivaji ganesan when I started to smoke. I guess my relatives dont get to see this as Iam still a non smoker as far as my family is concerened. But the beat part was when father confessed once of a similar attachment to that song. So are there any other who share this kinda feeling?. I think that the beauty of the song is accentuated with these happenings in life. Hope that more come out with such things.
- Mahendra Raj adds:
For the song "Yaar antha nilavu Yean antha kanavu" both kaviarasar and MSV were impressed with the good turnout of the song and lyrics. They wanted Shivaji to do something different for this song scene. When they met up with Shivaji the latter was holding a cigarette in between his lips. That gave them an idea. They requested that he sings (mouth) out the whole song with a cigarette in his mouth. Shivaji obliged and that song came out well in the picturisation and was widely acclaimed by the audience of the day.
- The sandhams in the charanams are pretty interesting. Listen to "dheivamE yaaridam yaarai nee thandhaayO" and you can feel as though the sandham is extended for a couple of syllables more than it should have been. Venkat, is this also a kalippaa?

Saravanan:
maasil veeNaiyum is a great song.. particularly enriched by SJ's singing. The male voice is quite ordinary.
Have you seen the movie 'pAdhai theriyudhu pAr'? Do you have any knowledge about the song picturizations? I have always wondered how 'thennangkeetru oonjalilE' was picturized.
Vaali wrote 'koduththadhellaam koduththaan' originally for this movie. The song was rejected by MBS.
LVijayalakshmi also acted in 'ALukkoru veedu' with Mal actor Sathyan. They are the ones who sing 'anbumanam kanindha pinnE achcham thEvaiyA' in the movie.

An Interesting Song From Shanthi ..
MSv Remembers this Incident in all his Interviews.. Shivaji took a Whole Night to think about how differently he can act in this song & came out with a Class Idea Which was highly Appreciated by Others.
MSV also Mentions that TMS sang this song in unusual Manner (very Soft) .
A class Song From a Class Composer,Class Actor,Class singer combination..
Shanthi had Shivaji,SSR,Vijayakumari & Devika in Lead ..
Other Famous songs from Shanthi are
1. Sendhoor Murugan kovilile (PBS,PS-V.kumar+SSR)
2. Sendhoor Murugan kovilile(Pathos by PS)
3. OOrengum Maaplillai Oorvalam(PS -Devika)
Thanks for this Wonderful Song

MSV also talks about Sir.Cliff Richard influence while he they were composing this one.
TMS one of the few occasions he has sung for Sivaji on a different pitch (say Jaishankar Pitch).Ponmagal vanthal and Sorgathil kattapatta thottil are some of the other in the same category.
but "Kanesan"-What a thinking actor he was.Overall Shanthi was a good movie with wonderful songs in the typical Bhimsingh style-bringing out the best of Sivaji.

bb,thanks a lot for 'Maasil veenaiyum' song. Being a lead singer in my school, when I was asked to select a prayer song, I chose this one and I composed my own tune in Vasantha.

Thanks for Yaar Antha nilavu - IMO one of TMS's and MSV/TKR's best.. This song will always remain one of my all time favourites. `Vaazvadhu pol oru bhavaanai kaatum nenjamey ' great lyrics.
raj - you can add nenjathiley nee netru vandhai - to the list of songs from Shanti - this is just the opposite - a very positive feel.
Thanks bb
