songs have comeout very well.
side A:
ele machi machi--- sung by kamal and udit narayanan. sung very well by kamal, but udit's tamil pronounciation is not impressive ,but maybe it is intentional bcos madhavan is an NRI in this movie. colloquial and catchy. very good road philosophy.
mounamae-- good melody. spb's daughter makes her debut.
naatukuoru--- kamal and others.nice song. a rarity in tamil cinema. a typical song which is often used in theatres and koothu=pattarai. nicely sing by kamal. nice wordings by pralayan
Side B:
Anbae Sivam: sung by kamal and karthik.best song in this album. very, very excellent wordings. a nice, beautiful.sensible song.kudos to vairamuthu.
ele machi machi--- a repeat of the previous song in side A. but it is sung by udit narayanan and tippu. i think the first song in side A was better than this. i doubt this song willl feature in the movie.its just to fill in the album.
poovasam-- sadhana sargam and vijay prakash.
starts off brilliantly. one of the best melodies of recent times.

There are some distinct advantages and disadvantages of writing a late review. But i shall try to get it right.
Anbe sivam
Saw it yesterday.Only the Balcony was full and that reminds you that it s a Kamal movie.
For the first time i get the "friendly feel" in a Tamil movie when Kamal and Madhavan start one of their many long conversations.Although the dialogues were a let-down Madhavan looks spantaneous in delivery.I feel Mauli would have certainly been apt for the dialogue. To me, Mauli is the behind-the -screen Nagesh who can handle comedy and serious situations with ease.Madan falls short of expectations........not well supported by the screen play which certainly has loop holes and incohesive.
Accident changes Kamal s face but the talkativeness? There were not many scenes earlier to establish this paricular trait.I tried to console myself that self-pity has opened him up and he is trying to talk his way out of inferiority complex. But i am wrong. He asserts that he is god and confers upon Madhavan that GOD title! But Kamal hits you with his sincerity and efforts (albeit strained!)."Aham Brahmasmi" - The advaita gist is told with some brilliant individual performances from Uma,Sathya,The Sister,Sethu,Santhana Bharathy and Madhavan with a BIG "M".You have seen Sarath Babu,Rajini,Arjun etc as Kamal s friends. But Madhavan ,i am sure has done a perfect 10.Save for the "door closing" scene Madhavan exudes warmth which helps you to relate to the movie better.
The elements that does bring the movie down are the age old cinema theories/situations and Kamal s pet theories.
1.Rich are bad and poor are good and rich daughters fall for poor boys.(Even while writing this i feel the "Makkipona Vasanai")
2.Do-gooder has to have a communist leaning.
3.Hero must have a fight sequence - a poorly choreographed fight ,that too!(what a fall Vikram Dharma!)
4.Two Poun Rajs dying - just to showcase Kamal s variety.
5.A Love triangle - this one is Right-angled!Kiran thinks that Sivam is dead!
6.Madhavan calling Kamal "brother" -Was there a need to estblish such connectivity?
7.SanthanaBharathy s change of heart......why it could be even Nazar s?But Kamal has successfully planted his pet "saarvagam".
8.Kiran - Kamal seems to have done a Mickey Stewart to Simran. She would have done a good job and her talents would have given a chance to tell the "other side" of the story too!
9."Sangu" -Naai -NallaSivathai "Miga Nalla" Sivamakka edukapairukira amaetur muyarchi!
Coming to the technical side
Vidyasagar s maiden venture with Kamal - not bad for the start.WCM alone leverages scenes ......a misconception he too seems to carry. You hear "four seasons" at least twice! VS vis-a-vis Kamal is a lopsided power equation and Kamal has sung more than he can chew! The street song certainly is not well composed.Udit Narayan /Sargam s singing.......Ellaum solvathey Vazhi mozhigiren!Vijay Prakash ...Harish Ragavendara clone......who is actaullya Unni Krishnan clone!I am sure Kamal will continue with him for his next venture.I would still expect Kamal to go with Rehman who is another techno-obsessed person.
Vairamuthu --I am upset with this man.Occasionally choose to come out of his "Apple Penne" algorithms (bb, thanks for the term!).Salute to him and Pralayan!
Prabhakar - the best seen in recent times ...particularly the train accident sequences.
Camera -Wilson? - Not a great job but good.the love duet could have been more pleasant.the therukoothu is again..spoilt.The lighting in accident sequences does not enhance the effect.
Sundar C - Going by his own admission that he was a mere spectator ....i don t see him getting related to similar ventures in the future.
"Babu" movie has this Valee s song "PaasmuLLa paarvayile Kadavul Vaazhgiran ,avan KaruNai ulla nenjinile Koil KoLgiran" -Anbe Sivam explains this two immortal lines thru two characters with a perfect 180 qualities.Kadhal Azhivathillai paartha paavathirku vimochanam!

Thanks for your feedback, Appreciator!
I agree with OISG on some of the cliches used in the film (also add: Christian characters in Tamil & Hindi films are either sacharine-sweet angels or drunkards. Malayalam films are an exception). But I should admit that the lady did a good job in her short-n-sweet role of a senior nurse-cum-Kanyastree)
But come to think of it, the movie is good and that's why we have so many points to discuss. We wouldn't bother asking these questions if it was a Bhagavathy, Baba, Gemini or a Sokka Thangam!
I wonder how this movie would have turned out, had it been directed by
a. the late Bharatan?
b. Mani Ratnam?
c. Priyadarshan?
d. Santhana Bharathy?

"There were not many scenes earlier to establish this paricular trait"
What next...you want a couple of scenes to establish his love for vellarikkai?
"SanthanaBharathy s change of heart......"
SB was an evil man but with a difference. His deeds were selfless since his evil was for the sake of Nasser. He absorbed the sins of his master at the expense of his own happiness (shades of JC?) and this establishes the semblance of God in him (Something you can't say of Nasser). This fits beautifully with the "service to fellow human beings is god" idealogy of the movie. I guess you would have preferred a tortured dialogue or two in the movie to this effect over a few minutes of quiet reflection on the ride back home.
Most of your other non-technical complaints are churlish quibbles that betray a lack of perception of the big-picture painted by the movie.
A hallmark of good cinema is what it conveys through what it didn't convey (puriyalayaa...athaan kadavul :)) I guess we need more aids like Hey Ram, Kannathil, and Anbe sivam to cure us of the what-i-saw-is-all-i-got disease.
Peter Pan. My take on your hypothetical directors.
Bharathan - He wouldn't have seen a halo around Kamal and would have boldly infused his own sensibilities into the movie. This would have been a positive influence. His Devar magan , for example, was the perfect blend of visuals and exposition.
Priyadarshan - Every frame would have had a picture-postcard-like quality, however inappropriate that may be.
Maniratnam - Would have certainly cut down on the verboseness of the movie. I am not sure whether that would necessarily be the best thing for this movie. IMO, the messages of some of his terrorism-themed movies were confused and muted. I thought he was pulling too many of his punches in his quest for subtlety.
Santhana Bharathy - We would have seen even more of Kamal's hand. Azhavukku meerinal amudamum nanjaagum:)

illaimaraikaai,
My feelings, exactly. Bharatan would definitely make a better choice. And you are right on dot about the directors! (VeLippadayaa sollarachey adhu enna 'ilai marai kaai'?) ;)
BTW, I found one particular scene quite funny, though the scene wasn't supposed to be evoke laughter:
Kamal creates an artwork out of the gravy & other foodstuff on the floor and they take a photograph. The next scene has him surrounded by a group of people, projecting the scanned image, now opened in the image editing software, Adobe Photoshop. Kiran says "What would he know about computers?" To this Kamal & Uma say, "Oh! She only has ADOBE 4 (Note: not Photoshop, but ADOBE); we have worked on ADOBE 5!!!" Kiran (and the audience) is supposed to be surprised at their advanced technical know-how!
And there's more...
Kamal uses a couple of built-in 'filters' (a 4 year old can do that) and voila, the image is changed/distorted! To this Cartoonist Madhan says something like, "Wow! Pramadham, amazing, you are great!"
Wonder what Kamal wanted to prove here? Even in such good films, the makers take the audience for granted.
PS: Kiran later sells the above image for Rs. 20000 to a website called Foodindia.com (imaginative)!!!

Ilaimaraikai
I know what you made you turn hostile at my review!
My aathangam was after a long time, this movie had the chance to come near his Devar Magan, which in my extremely humble opinion THE BEST Tamil movie in the last two decades. So i listed out what you kindly call "churlish quibbles ".It s ok."Vellarikkai" example - Muruga!
Change of heart i dialogue sollithan velipaduthamudiyuma - this shows the number of P Vasu movies you have seen!
If not Bharathan my choice would be Singitham Sreenivasa Rao.Certainly Santhana bharathy would be better choice than Mani Ratnam and Priyadarshan.Paasangu kidyathu!
Peter pan,I wanted to mention that along with micro-processor chip in cell phone!

Peter Pan....you are right about the sequence...it did stick out like a sore thumb. (Madhan says "Nallaa..ippo computerlaa kalakungaa"..give me a break!) Mercifully the self-appointed editors in Toronto (read theater owners) cut out that stimulating discussion on s/w versions! I guess Uma's occupation as an architect was a contrivance to setup this misdirected scene.
Our cinema folks grossly underestimate the average rasigan's computer literacy. Remember Sarathkumar and his ridiculous tete-a-tetes with the computer that go something like "Compooter...click.....(a) sariyaana badilaa kooravum" in the tv program "Kodeeswaran"!!!!
Antha flashbackai innum konjam crisp aakirundaal naalla irundirukkum. This is the danger of having cronies like Sunder C in one's creative team:)
"PS: Kiran later sells the above image for Rs. 20000 to a website called Foodindia.com (imaginative)!!!"
Quite possible because the story takes place in the same universe where Madhavan and co's ramshackle s/w development front receives a Rs 9 crore contract from the US (intimated over the phone!) in Alaipayudhe:) Boy , life sure is good in Kollywood :) or coming to think of it now I know why the US economy is as it is:)
Minor quibbles apart...I agree with you that Anbe sivam is a milestone in Indian cinema.

OISG...Sorry for my rude comments. I fully apologize to you.
I somehow got the impression that you were handing out a back-handed compliment to an extraordinary film(bringing "Kaathal Azhivathillai" in to your discussion certainly didn't help:))
"Change of heart i dialogue sollithan velipaduthamudiyuma - this shows the number of P Vasu movies you have seen! "
If you had read my post carefully, I had argued for the exact opposite. In fact, I think Anbe sivam excelled when it came to communicating its messages subliminally. Why, even that vellarikkai was a symbol against globalisation:).
Anyways....lets agree to disagree. Peace!
