Heard it after I finally got the cassette. Fantastic Album by KR.His best work as of date. Have written only about the theme below.Actually found the recoding to be good, certainly not bad.
Should listen to this in a nice system , takes you on a trip.
1.Instrumental Piece - Theme Music ,is mindblowing and my pick, material for hollywood. He has packed so much music in 2 minutes! Listened to it repeatedly.
Not sure how to explain it musically, but my observation by time line. Has 7 different sections within it:
First 10 Sec: Violin Background with a soft Rythm with rain drops simulating melody . Excellent. Prelude to the next step.
10 -35 sec : A beautiful transition to a stronger melody , continues the with building up the Rythm with percussion.Violins come in with great force.
35 -55 sec : Strumming of guitar in the background to the changed violin melody. Slows down to pick up the force again for the next one. The beat in this section is very different.
55 -70 sec : Heightens the piece to a new level with reiterating with more violins. Simply awesome.
70 -95 sec : Goes into a more Rock /tango mood.
95 -105 sec : Dramatic violins.
95 -120 sec : A mysterious chorus with background having violins.
120-140 sec : Chorus with the melody of the first section, ends with a high note.
This guy should do more like this and not like Vanchinathan and other crap. This is a treat for music lovers. Certainly a buy just for this piece.

ALbum was excellent in Melodies ..But if you consider depth in Orchestration ,i would say Kudaikul Mazhai will be the first ...

ALBUM is the most versatile album so far from KR in my opinion

Album, Ullam Kollai Poguthae, Dum Dum Dum and now Kudaikkul Mazhai. In my honest opinion, I feel, he is the most talented MD at this age. Many complains that his style is like his fathers. But it is wrong. He has his unique skills ans styles. The Orchestraion in his albums are excellent. Only thing he has to do is, find a good sound engineer. In Singara Chennai,Ragasiyamai and Kadhala Kadhala he tried some thing new, but failed to get the attendtion for his work. Eg. Saravana Bava from kadhala Kadhala, Kabul Desaththu from Singara Chennai. Even in Vanjinathan, Muthathamida vaa is a very appealing song.
KR is gaining and I am sure, one day he will No 1 in tamil. No doubts. Because, Talent never let a person down.
IR Era still continues. Only IR can put a stop to it. YSR is now ruling the Industry. KR is getting his luck step by step. Bhavatharini is going to make waves from Kaaththiruppaen. So, Tamil Film Music world should revolve around IR and his family. You can call it as Fate or Fortunate, but it is the Fact.

yeah ur right robin KR has a very complicated style of music , his ullasam , Naam iruvar are classics, his vanchinathan had gems, he is the music director done bad by critics like india today, i feel his lyric quality is not upto standards and his recording after Kadhala kadhala Except dum dum dumm has been very hollow , and he should give quality songs like his father , he is good at melody , allow himto geive his own melody and his patho numbers are good , but sad thing perople ask him do a song like raaja , there is where the fault lies

I would say Dumm Dumm DUm is teh most versatiel one ...
1.Sutrum - FOlk song with Jazz guitar and (mandolin >??) interludes
2.Designu Raja - Orchestral interluded with a ordinary tune ...
3.Un Perai Sonnale - Layers of music ...Pure melody
4.Athaan varuvaga - Caranatic orerchestration with Country music type of violins in teh interlude
5.Ragasiyamai - Carantic violins ,sufi kind of tune .
6.Krishn Krishna -pure disco number

Variety, versatality, and orchestration-- KM tops D3 by leaps and bounds. No questions.
Hey, it is after all an improvement!
Why go back?!
MSV,IIR and ARR's influence to some extent in new MD's is inevitable, as they have been proven material of success and cannot be avoided. A new MD makes his name when, despite these unavoidable situations, he still scores and makes his individuality. IT IS THERE IN KR!

Sorry guys, I am unable to share your enthusiasm for this album. I know and appreciate KR's tunes a lot. The tune flows without any hiccups. Very smooth and convincing, like a seasoned/senior MD. But I feel he is not doing a good job in backing up the song with good orchestration. adiyE kiliyE is the pick of the album. (No wonder he has given this to dad proudly :)) He has used a ostinato in adiye kiliyE without much variation. There are not much fills, harmonies except for the dramatic pauses. The SPB song uses a standard/classical arrangment and because of KR's tunes it sounds good. The onne Rendu and oru kOttaikkul songs sound like some of his previous songs. The orchestration technique he uses seems to be that the backing instruments just follow the main tune with little variations. This gets boring after a while. Also, he uses the snare hits all the time and I am not sure whether we should take this as his standard style, like IR's tabla. But IR has so many things going on in his songs, I tend to ignore the tabla or it is never in the picture. I do understand that he does not use loops. But this alone cannot be a feature. ARR uses loops and still the songs dont feel mechanical. Surely, Karthik has done a good job with the instrumentals. He is surely a knowledgeable person in music.
Karthik should not impose too high a standard on himself and tie his own hands. It is difficult to be like dad. IR worked very hard before entering the movies, so he could orchestrate the songs with ease just like the masters. Karthik should not restrict himself to certain techniques or avoid certain practices. He should neither worry about upsetting or impressing dad. He should keep in mind, that he is competing only with his contemporaries in a commercial environment, where artistic value gets appreciated only after a MD has proven his commercial value.
And BTW, he should get a good sound engineer.

This album comes as a close contender to his best work, "Grahan". 'Adi Kiliye' is an absolute wonder and catchy. Great job KR and great extraction Parthiban.

A little difficult to rate the other songs. 2 to 5 very close.
2) Adiye Kiliye - The instrumental is nicer than the vocal. I wish Yesudas or Madhu Balakrishnan had sung the vocal. A classy song. Can some one tell us the raaga that is used.
3) Intrumental (Thalattu)- KR starts with a nice melody ,missed this kind of melody in TFM for a long time. The aalap in hindustani is very deep. Overall the emotional feel for
this piece is enhanced by the guitar and the orchestra. Good stuff.
4)Onne Rendu - Strangely first time listening wants you to classify it as a dappa song. Very catchy, dont miss the interludes , shows some class. Lyrics should have been better.
5) Oru Kottai - This is a serious one KR has done.Compare it to Ragsiyamai. Smooth flow from beginning to end , nice and simple Riffs. No dearth in the usage of Orchestra. Good job KR.
A few intersting stuff like the morphing of the in first stanza ..Male: "Iruvathu Vayathu Thani MaramE , Pasithavan roosithda " Female ending the line "Sammathama" ;)
First Stanza has a kottu rythm , second interlude sets the rythm for the second stanza, Timpani I think.
Credit should go to the singers , bringing out that unique feel to the song.
6)Enge Poi Solluven : Just credit for using SPB and attempting a style that he has not done before. Tried to be a "Yen Soga Kathaye kelu". If this becomes a hit should hera it in the bus stands.
7) Pada pada - Catchy but could have done better.Loop stuff so not that interesting.Softer than then rest. But certainly better than Amul Baby etc.
Agree with most of you and more critic...
K - I too observed that "The orchestration technique he uses seems to be that the backing instruments just follow the main tune with little variations." seems to very apparent after some time.
SK - "MSV,IIR and ARR's influence to some extent in new MD's is inevitable " Very true.
The others I would feel are :
High pitch- god only knows why he takes everything to such High pitch....KR please .
Inconsistency - After Album have to wait for so long. Though I liked 3 roses and Oduthey from Ragsiyamai. Have to be more consistent in the "Interesting music" output. Heard he is doing a Vijayakanth flick. There we go...
More positive outlook..
Myself , After enjoying ARR, nice to hear fresh music. Looks like KR is taking steps , in the right direction. Atleast (dont want to name ) not like other MDs currently...loops..shouting...and sound engineering, nothing else there.
Recording wise I think he intentionally does it to be unique, dont know. Because if you think about it, in this age what prevents him to do what other can do. He is tech savvy as his loops and programming are top of the line , equalling
any other MD in some songs . E.g:Sevvai Desam.
All the interludes in this album are Must Listen...Adiye Kiliye's Piano, Onnu Rendus' Jazz and violin and Oru Kottai's Orchestra!
To beat it all the theme. Once again requesting KR to do more stuff like this.
Overall Kudaikkul Malai is a music lover's album.
