i don't think many TR songs have been mentioned in this thread.. "idhu kuzhandhai paadum thaalaattu" was an excellent song. will come back to it in detail later.

By any chance, is there some problem with the way
the link to this page appears in the main page?
I am asking this because, in my web browser only
the last "9937.02:23:42.html" appears and so it
says "page not found" when I click on it. Can you
please check?

I looked at the html source of the main page. For some links it has the full address, for example:
"tfmpage.com/forum/22668.04:15:01.html"
But for others like this thread there is just:
"9937.02:23:42.html". Now that is ok by rules,
but my browser (IE 4.02) is getting confused. I
find that this is the only "*.html" link with a
":" in its name! Perhaps this is a problem?
Sorry for the interruption!

You mentioned about the song sariyaa thappaa
(TMS; MD: KVM) from the movie, kooNdukkiLi in some
thread long time ago. I got hold of the song
yesterday and I have encoded it in RA (see link
below). Can you write about the background of
that song, if you know it?
The movie has Sivaji and MGR, with a single lady
character, Janaki. I think the storyline is as
follows. Sivaji and Janaki love each other, but
because of some family reaons Janaki ends up
marrying MGR, and she is faithful to MGR after
that. She goes off to live with MGR in a faroff
place which Sivaji doesn't know. Sivaji roams
around from town to town unhappily and ends up
reaching the place where MGR-J live and becomes
a friend of MGR and then the real story starts.
Sivaji has bad intentions.. He gets MGR falsely
implicated in some crime and packs him off to jail
(MGR's role in the movie ends there). Janaki is
all in tatters with a child and no one to support.
Sivaji makes all kinds of moves to win her for
a bodily relation. How she keeps away from all his
moves and wins finally is the rest of the movie.
How Sivaji agreed to act in such a villainish role is
amazing. What I have forgotten is where exactly
this song comes. If you know please write here.
Thanks.

SK,
Sivaji must have agreed to the role for its rich paradoxes. I've always likened this song to "Hamlet's" tormented soliloquies. Sivaji's character is weighing the options between desire and honor, love and shame, and wondering who's really to blame when the only person he loves is married to another who's been sent to prison. He wonders what's so wrong about picking up where they left off even though the girl is married, since for all intents and purposes she is single. But the song is in a rarefied realm in TFM lyrics, it not only struggles with mortal desires and morality, it asks the greater question, who's responsible for planting the seeds of desire in me?
The song occurs at a crucial juncture either when Sivaji gets turned down initially by Janagi or when he's filled with remorse at his desires knowing that she is there for the taking. The song sequence has Sivaji roaming the streets and singing in despair.
Thanks for the link. I haven't heard that song in ages. It was great listening to it again. Another grand thing about this old song, except the phrase "sariyaa thappaa?" none of the other lines are repeated. Comprehension must have been so profound back then.

Udhaya:
Thanks very much for your comments on the song.
I think the song comes after MGR is packed off
to jail. The movie actually starts with the scene
where MGR saves Sivaji from some accident,
the two becoming friends, and MGR bringing Sivaji
to the house where he lives with Janaki. The
earlier story of Sivaji-J's love etc is quickly
given in a flashback without any songs.
BTW, the song was written by Thanjai Ramaiah Das.

Another overlooked song in "Karaiyai Thodaatha Alaikal'.
The song is "Poo Parikkum Nerathiley...".
The hero hesistate to express his love, The heroine finds someone else. The song starts...
alaikal ointha pin kadal neeril kulikavey
ennum manitharkal innatil kodiyey
alaikal ointha pin kadal neeril kulikavey
ennum manitharkal innatil kodiyey
kangaiyil vellam ponginaal
karaikal podanum
karaikal poda thavarinaal
kalangi vaaazhanum
kaalam evarukkum ingey kaathirukka koodumaa..
M.Metha wrote the lyrics. This song really fits into the situation.

Yes. KVM followed lyrics first, tune later
as a strict rule. That's why you can see some
really beautiful Kannadhasan lyrics in most
KVM songs.

Though I have read earlier that KVM always preferred to arrange a tune based on the lyrics, I am sure it wouldn't have possible for him always.
KVM who used similar tunes in Telugu (where he was a numero uno MD) and Tamil movies must have compromised on the lyrics on many occasions.
Examples : 'Vaani Raani'
'Enipadigal'
However in 'Vasantha Maaligai', he used the telugu film tunes as a base and adapted them for the lyrics well written by KK.

Most Balachander movies have good sitn. for lyrics/music,esp. challenging for lyricist.Like
Angum ingum paathai uNdu

Gyaayiru undu thingal undu
unthan naal entha naalo
from avargal when there are 3 guys to woo Sujatha.
Kanna yendral murugan vanthaan
muruga yendral kannan vanthan
yentha theivam sontham endru poovai poojai seivaal
thodarkathayo vidukathayo ........(forgot)
But previous stanza had one punch,
aval yezhuthum kavithaigalai vithi pugunthe
thiruthuthamma
(probably at how every step she take to straight life ends failure). Superb.

You are talking about unavoidable situations where
KVM compromised. There is even a case of lifting a
tune.. when he was working with Modern Theatres.
Leaving all those out, I think KVM did follow
'lyrics then tune' approach.
