Hi
No one has confirmed the Vaasanthi in 'Vaan pole vannam konda' charanam. so, i think, it is wrong. i will look more into it.
what's the raaga of 'Nilave vaa' from Mouna ragam?

IR/Vidhya/MS what about "Nila Kaigirathu Neram theygiradu....."? Is'nt it Hamirkalyani? And also the SPB& S Janaki song i had referred earlier "Devi Vanda...".And by the way only portion of the "Yeriyilae Oru Kashmir roja..." is Hamirkalyani right?..such as "Maalaiyilae varum mannanukku.."
And what about the TMS song "Nallarvakellam.."Can it be confirmed as Vaasanthi?

ravi68: yes, 'devi vantha neram' (SPB,VJ. "Vandi chakkaram". MD: Shakar-Ganesh) has a hamir kalyani saayal in the first line.
Rajesh: The deviation from mohanam in 'vaan pole' can just be considered an accidental. Nothing more, i guess

I remember there was a discussion about raga of "Unkannil neervazhinthal" long before. Geetha said it is "Nilamani" close to sivaranjani. i cant recall the A/a, but will post if i remember.

It is not pure vasanthi. I don't remember the lyrics. If you can give me the lyrics I can clearly tell you where there is a madhyama prayOgam (in the pallavi).

IR..Thanks for the link.Phew..... that was a real good Vaasanthy.
MS... I think the song goes something like this
"Nallavarkellam Sakshigal rendu onru manasakshi onu deivathin sakshiamma...Nambikkaivaithu kallaiyum parthal deivathin katshiamma..adudan..."But do tell me how can u get hold of the swara sequence from the lyrics?????
Another question...what is the raaga of the song " Oh..Vasantha raaja..thaen sumanda roja.." sung by SPB and SJ.Its a lovely melody. And there is another one.."Madhukadalo.....Madanvidum kanaiyo.."Jeyachandran and S Janaki.SJ sings a beautiful loopback in the pallavi. Is it Madhyamavathi?Bad luck i dont remember the films once again.Sorry

ravi - by syllables (or santham)
nallavark kellaam saatchigaL uNdu
sggg rg** rggg rg**
ondru mana saak shi
ss** ss** gr d2*
and etc...
dei vath thin = m1 m1 m1
There is a d2 amd m1 prayogam totally uncharacteristic of the ragam.
As far as I infer, the only song which is set purely in vasanthi (with r1 occassionally for slight embellishment) is "kurukku siruththavaLE".

MS, sorry for the delayed response. Ref:ilakkaNam maarutho.. When you start the song with Pa, the song touches M1 in the word 'ilakkiyam' (to be precise in the kiyam part) and M2 in the word 'AanathO' (in the part 'na') and it sounds like Hamir Kalyani. When you start the song with Sa, it uses the notes of Desh with both N2 and N3 (exactly at the points mentioned above for M1 and M2) being used. Choose between Hamir Kalyani and desh :-))
NallavarKellaam , to me , starts with G3 and touches G2 at the point 'vEru yaaramma' in the stanza in the line 'Vidhi seitha kutram andri ...' and uses D2 in the pallavi and in the start of the charanam.

haris: 'aanandha thEn sindhum poon chOlayil' has a big nishaadham n3. It looks "Brindhaavana saaranga"
brindhAvanasAran'ga |22| S R2 M1 P N3 S | S N2 P M1 R2 G2 S
Rajesh : "Nilaavae vaa" looks shankaraabaraNam with bug madhyamam M2 and small nishaadham n2 peeping in 2 lines.

ravi68,
Thanks for the MSV tune link. But unable to listen due to problem in the system. Will get back.
SL,
I do thought Malaipozhuthin was Chandrakouns or Kalyana vasantham initially. After lot of discussions in the forum, it was concluded as Sumanesaranjini. I remember now that, sitting on the judge role in SUN TV Saptaswarangal, TN Seshagopalan had indeed declared this song more of Sumanesa ranjini. I am not technically competent to answer on notes.
All,
'Konja Neram...' (TMS / SJ) from Sirithu Vazha Vendum (MSV) is a beautiful number is Saranga but I feel it has Kalyani coming in the Saranam.

There is a song by A.M raja and jikki having the following line:
"kadavul meethu aaNAai unnai endrum kaivida maattEn" - I don't remember the lyrics of the song. But this song indeed seems to have some HK in it.

(3) PS' voice

I'll catch that song on SK's site and post the link here :-)

SL:We did have a few rounds here on newtfmpage on Sumanesaranjani. The other songs were "Orunaal Iravu..","Andhamai Paarungal azhagu", but the pure one identified was "Engirundo Vandaan.."

I looked at the Ragapravaham book for the raga of 's g2 m1 p n3 s+' (O Vasantha raja). Only two melas could be ascribed to it -Kokilapriya or Kiravani. I found a raga under Kiravani called "Srothasvini" which has these notes (both A/a). Well, if IR knew the name or not, I dont know, probably some one might ask him in an interview next time :)

Vasu:
I think the raga of "sindhiya vENmani" is branded to be "shrothaswini" in Ramaswamy gireesan's site.
IF this is shrothaswini, the song sindhiya veNmani cannot be in that raga - has M2 and g3 prayogam in the sharanam.
But even in Ovasantha raja the line "maNthotta thaal thaaaNE", the "thaa" of "thaanE" seems to have a d2. In such case it is some "manodharma" composition of IR :-) Please confirm.

The background music in O vasantha raaja's start
goes like.
sa ga3 ma1pa ma1ga3ma1paa ri1sa ri1sa r2
As Ms mentioned "maNthottadhaal ingu"-"Sevvaanam polaachu" has a n2 and dha2.
(paani3saa ni2dha2 ma1dha2 dha2papaa)
Ignoring these two makes "O vasantha raaja" gambheera naattai".
- From: IR (@ 38.220.167.197)
on: Tue Sep 19 12:33:25 EDT 2000
Any links to O Vasantha Raja on the net guys? As far as I remember, I do not think G3 is used in that song - which would make it more "Shrotaswinish" and definitely not Gambeera Naattai.. may be I need to listen again
- From: IR (@ 38.220.167.197)
on: Tue Sep 19 12:53:27 EDT 2000
MS: honestly it is very difficult to expect a clean number in any classical raga for that matter.... I believe they use a bunch of foreign notes for that "special effect" which would make it "light music"!
Going by this theory, Sindhiya Venmani and O Vasantha Raja are definitely "Srothaswini" or Srothaswini based...
I just listened to O Vasantha Raja.. No G3 prayoga as far as I could hear.
- From: MS (@ 129.252.23.185)
on: Tue Sep 19 17:34:41 EDT 2000
IR - I said G3 prayOgam is in sh=indhiya veNmani and not in oh vasantha raaja.
Anyway as you say, it is difficult to brand any cine song under a particular ragam unless the composer has wilfully done it with classical purity intentionally.
