Hi MS/ RR,
One pure Vasanthy number, as I know , is ' Anbu Nadamadum Kalaikoodame...' from Avanthan Manithan (MSV). A wonderful song.
As also, good Harikhamboji numbers are -
'Pournami Nilavil' (SPB / SJ) from Kanni Penn (MSV)
'Ore Padal Unnai Azhaikum' (TMS) from Engiruntho Vandal' (MSV).
Hope these are correct.
What is the conclusion on Yamuna Nadhi inge ?

dhaajmahaal- pattu is "Adi manja kizhangae" I guess.
"Pazhamudhircholai"(Varusham 16) pattil charaNam last line..
oru bodhai manam koNdaadudhaee
idhil "koNdaadudhae" has swarams as ririri gama gari sani dhapa.
khamas doesn't have a ri in its aarohaNam.
the song shud be harikaamboji.

Jayaram, 'Anbu nadamaadum' starts with SR1, more on the lines of bhoopalam and then brings in vasanthi. The first line of the stanzas includes D2 also and then later D1 in the line 'malar vaNNa mugamE'. Whew!!! All this to prove that it is not pure Vasanthi :--). I agree with Vidhs, Pazhamuthir ChOlai is in HK indeed!!

Another song that looks like Vaasanthi is,
'Vaan pole vannam konda' from Salangai oli.
the song starts with Mohanam, and then the charanam seems to be in Vaasanthi.
Experts confirm

MS,'IlakkaNam..'s is in Hamir Kalyani. I think the song starts in D2. Both M1 and M2 are used , typical of a song in Hamir Kalyani.

'Yamuna nathi ingE' sounds like some Kambhoji Janyam. Some other HK numbers, 'Amaithiyaana nathiyinilE Odam..', 'Unnai Ondru kEtpEn'.

Hi,
1.Thanks IR for ur clarification on "Andhamanai.."
2.There ia another Vaasanthi number "Nallavarkellam Sakshigal rendu onru manasakshi......." sung by TMS, i dont remmeber the film or the MD.Can somebody clarify?
3. Yamunanadhiyingae looks like Nagaswaravali...compare with the "Holiday Mood "tune of MSV at
http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/ppp/
and the Nagaswaravali alapana/krithi rendition "Garudagamana" by Flute N Ramani athttp://www.musicindiaonline.com/cgi-bin/music.cgi?Mode=List&Code=00010I&a=sdiklg985kmfdsiumds98m
, especially MSV has made good use of the flute in both his "Holiday Mood" tune and "Yamuna Nadhiyingae". To be confirmed please...

Yamunaa nadhi has a R2 and N2.
I would rather label "Yamunaa nadhi" as Harikaamboji or some janyam of it.

SL : I think 'Illakanam Marutho' is Sudha Saranag (Hindustani). I am not sure how it is diff. from Hamir Kalyani though it should be pretty close.
All, Thanks for taking up Yamuna Nadhi Inge.
ravi68, what is the 'Holiday Mood' tune of MSV ?
what are you referring to ? Pl clarify.
But, which raga is the song ?
Mrs Mano - To your query,
1.Natabhiravi
2.Sumanesa Ranjani
3.Bagesree

Jeyaram..I really luv the Yamunanadhiyangae tune...Perhaps as Vidhya says its Harikhamboji but "Nagaswaravali"ish. And for your query.. go to the site http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/ppp/
and then "MSV's Instrumental Holiday Mood". It was the title song for the Srilankan Radio Tamizh Sevai 2 morning Pongum Poompunal program.

And Jeyaram..do let me know ur feedback once u hear it... the use of the flute to etch the tune. My view is that cinema songs never fall into a clear raga scale and we have to go by the predominant melody scale which is there in that song

Hi
Can someone please tell me the raga for the extended instrumental (first) in Raja parvai? The scene where Madhavi and Kamal meet first (she is attending his concert for the first time).
To jog your memory, the "words" for this piece goes like this:

:-)
Thanks,

Sl/MS..There is another IR song in Hamirkalyani sung by SPB and Vani Jeyaram which starts with "Devi Vandha Neram....". And offcourse it does goes off into Naatai in its charanams..as in "Mannumm vinnum onrai..undan maan vizhi paarvaiyil kandaen...". Can somebody throw more light on that?

Vidhya,
Thanks. However, my question is about the purely instrumental piece in the beginning of the film. Kamal standing in the stage and playing violin with orchestral accompaniment. It is a fusion piece that starts out classical.
Thanks,
Srikanth.

somebody please give the aaro/avaro of Hamir kalyaan. I have just a feel for this raagam but no idea how it goes technically.
Also please clarify as to how it differs from "sudhdha saarang" and "saarangaa" by explaining technically.
TMK, the songs in saarangaa are:
(1) kaadhalil maattaamal sutrugindra kaaLAi ivan
(2) manasil uNaru usha sandhyayaay - KJY,SJ from a mallu movie - I shall try to get the link. It si actually a raagamalika comprising of panthuvarraLi, saaranga and one more raaga(forgot its name)
Hamir kalyaaN:
(1) yEriyilE oru kashmir rojaa
(2) manathukkuL utkaarndhu maNi adiththai ( This is the song which confuses me)
- From: Vidhya (@ 204.164.111.130)
on: Fri Sep 15 12:49:45 EDT 2000
MS: Both are kalyaNi janyams.
aarohaNam bears a clear-cur difference.
HamirkalyANi |65| S P M2 P D2 N3 S | SN3D2PM2M1G3PM1R2S
sAran'ga |65| S R2 G3 M2 P D2 N3 S | SN3D2PM2R2G3M1R2S
- From: IR (@ 63.16.71.220)
on: Fri Sep 15 12:56:51 EDT 2000
Vidhya is right... but I would go by the following arohanams as they bring out the raaga chaya better.. the main difference lies in the usage of Madhyamam... and the prayoga
HK: Sa Ri2 Sa Pa Ma2 Pa Dha2 Ni3 Sa
Sa Ni3 Dha2 Pa Ma2 Ma1 Ga3 Pa Ma1 Ri2 Sa
Saaranga: Sa Ri2 Ga3 Ma2 Pa Dha2 Ni3 Sa
Sa Ni3 Dha2 Pa Ma2 Ri2 Ga3 Ma1 Ri2 Sa
The beauty of HK lies in the usage of the 2 madhyamams next to one another.. Saranga uses the prayoga Ma2 Ri2 Ga3 Ma1 Ri2 Sa.. only
- From: IR (@ 63.16.71.220)
on: Fri Sep 15 13:01:01 EDT 2000
There is both a Shuddha Saarang and a Sudhdha Saaranga - the former a janya of Shankarabharanam and hence has only Ma1 and the later I believe is a janya of Rishabhapriya and takes Ma2.
I am not too sure about the aaro/avaro of these 2
