CV & Udhaya,
May be he had the talent but YGMs humour was mostly pedestrian. His best effort was probably as a loosu in navagraham ( anumanthu kalyanam enna aacchu?)but that is about that. Mentioning YGM in the same breath as nagesh is blasphemy and YGM would be the first to admit it ;-)

Song of the Day: kaattukkuLLE thiruvizha from thaai sollaith thattaadhE.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kaattukkulle.rm
- Sung by P.Suseela. Music by K.V.Mahadevan and lyrics by Kannadasan in this MGR film. Thanks to SK for this song.
- I like this song for the signature KVM beat and its lyrical beauty. The jingu jakku rhythm that KVM used in several songs sounds fresh in this song. The song can make a good song for a young kid to learn and sing, if not for anything, at least to enjoy the simplicity and beauty of Kannadasan's lyrics.
- SK wrote in a Kannadasan thread:
Here is another nice one by Kannadhasan;

At any time I listen to KaattukkuLe thiruvizha, I appreciate a LRE flavour. Was it planned for LRE initially? PS has done some magical twist to bring out this style.. That ‘hoi… ho ho hoi’ is fantastic :-)
I remember PS mentioning this as one of her favorite songs [Ref: PonmaNi Vairamuthu’s interview with PS for Kumudham]
Udaya: Neenga nalla lunch saapitta piragu ‘kutram purindhavan’ paatta kEtteengala? ennachu?
Saravanan: When you sponsored mom’s song, I raised “What happened to her son”. I believe SM is still living good in that Kazhugu song. Nice melody. VEra paattu avar paadaliyaa? :-(

Saravanan,
'Kadalennum' was a great song. The song is so fresh, and I guess a song can be so by only if it has anything original in it. For instance, the usage of guitar, which is typical of Ilayaraja, is so striking in being unique and which brought in a great change to the Tamil Film Music which existed till then. The strings section the guitar lead merges into in the first interlude was a treat to hear. And the rhythm and bass sequence in this song are of the nature that a guitarist would love to observe and learn from. It is really nice to hear such songs which have ceased to exist !
BB, Thank You.

By the bye, what is that 'jingu jakku rhythm'? :)

SP, no, I am not :))
Da Vinci, the jingu jakku beat of KVM that you can find in this song and in songs like "chinnap paapppaa engaL sellap paappaa" and "maNNukku maram baaramaa".

Subbu, G.Raghavan, before listening to this song yesterday, I was also somehow under the impression that it was an LRE song! So, it was surprising to hear it again and see that it was a PS song. Looks like I was not alone.

I think there is one more song with "Jingu Jakku..." beat. it goes like "Ore oru oorile... " . It may also be MD'ed by KVM.

The familiar jingu jakku beat (‘Nee sirithaal naan sirippen’, ‘Chinna china ooruniyaam’ can also be added to that long list!), monotonously similar interludes for all the 3 charanams—despite these, if the song is likeable, it is due to the sweetness of PS’s voice, and of course, the fertile imagination of Kannadasan.
bb, I don’t think LRE was ever envisaged for the song, (especially considering it is for the heroine), as Devar Films was the exclusive domain of TMS & PS.
Thaai Sollai Thattadhe brings in memories of two delightful duets: ‘Sirithu sirithu ennai siraiyil ittai’ (MGR wearing karuppu kannadi, BS, open car) and ‘Pattu chelai kaathaada ( MGR in overcoat & hat, BS, garden, night). ‘Poyum poyum manithanukkindha’ (TMS), ‘Paattu oru paattu’ (TMS/PS), ‘Poo uranguthu’ (PS), ‘Oruthi maganaai’ (PS) are the other songs. I remember watching the film on TV as a kid—MR Radha stands out in memory as the villain with a really weird name that caught my fancy then – Paraangusam!
I also remember being exasperated with songs of this genre, i.e. the heroine singing alone (or with her thozhis) in praise of nature, in most cases. And Sarojadevi was invariably in most of them! ‘Katukkulle thoruvizha’, ‘Kattu rani kottaiyle’(?), ‘Paravaigale paravaigale enge vandheenga’, ‘Azhagaana vaazhai marathottam’---
And when the filmmakers ran out of ideas, they even made her stare at a fish tank in the drawing hall and sing ‘Meene meene meenamma’, run up and down a flight of stairs in the interludes, and again continue staring at the fish tank during the charanams!

Saravanan,
Couldn't resist this one:

The above is so different from:
"sendhoorappoovae", "adadada maamarakkiliyae", "kaalaippaniyil aadum malargal", "thenil aadum roja", "dhalir dhalir".
In fact, after Sendhoorappoovae, nearly every movie gave its unmarried heroine a song on a swing voiced by the unstoppable SJ.
