Song of the Day: kaadhalenum kOyil from kazhugu.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kaadhalenum.rm
- Saravanan writes:
‘kAdhalenum kOyil katti vaithEn nenjil’ from kazhugu. Sung by Soolamangalam Murali. Lyrics by Panju Arunachalam. Music by Ilayaraja.
Last week we listened to Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi. This week lets listen to her son, in what is perhaps his only tfm outing.
* * * *
Panju Arunachalam’s Kazhugu (released on 6.3.1981) was directed by S.P Muthuraman and starred Rajni, Rathi, Sumalatha, YGM, Vanitha, Cho, Sangili Murugan & others. Rajni and Rathi (on their honeymoon?) accompanied by their friends (YGM, Vanitha--) go holidaying in a bus equipped with all amenities. Their fun-filled drive takes a turn for the bizarre, when they happen to witness an occult orgy that culminates in a gruesome human sacrifice. And how Rajni & co bring the culprits to book forms rest of the story.
Kazhugu was a loose adaptation of Jack Starrett’s 1975 thriller ‘Race With The Devil’ (released on 2.2.1975), written by Wes Bishop & Lee Frost. It starred Peter Fonda and Warren Oates, who accompanied by their wives (Lara Parker & Loretta Swit), drive a campervan from San Antonio to Aspen. On the way they chance upon a gory coven ceremony, and for rest of the film, they are pursued by the Satanist cult members. The film was famous for its spine-tingling chase scenes.

‘Ponnoviam-- kandenamma engengum’ is a classic composition from the film- beginning with the chorus voices humming in harmony, SJ takes off in superb style and IR merrily joins the party. ‘Oru poovanthile’, with its dreamy, laid-back charanams boasts of SPB at his nonchalant romantic best. ‘Thedum deivam neril vandhadhu’ (MV/SJ) is surcharged with surreal shenanigans. The haunting BGM score also won widespread acclaim.
‘kAdhalenum kOyil’ is among the very rare intimate love songs filmed on Rajnikanth. The bonfire blazing away with Rajni and Rathi locked in passionate embrace, lost to the world. And IR is the cupid waving his wand and casting his mesmerizing spell over the lovers. Like the serenely meandering Bhagirathi that gradually acquires majesty as the mighty Ganges, the single guitar launching the prelude befriends many rich accompaniments in the spellbinding sojourns marking the interludes. And these punctuate the song’s progression with euphoric moments of aural extravaganza.
I fell in love with this song when I heard it first as a kid, and to this day this love lasts. I don’t know if Soolamangalam Murali ever sang another film song, but like Radhika (‘Ilam pani thuli vizhum neram’), he sure made his tryst with celebrity with just this one.
Twenty years hence, there’s bound to be a fresh set of df-ers hanging around these pages- they will be fascinated anew by these songs, and will continue to ecstatically exclaim on their magic, and wonder about the obscure Radhika and Murali. Some songs can never become dated, and ‘kAdhalenum kOyil’ is among them.

Saravanan, good job in unearthing this one. One of the most elusive songs ever until I got hold of it recently. The real file here unfortunately doesnt do full justice to this mesmerizing number. Great to listen to, in the late hours of the night.

Quite an archaelogical dig this one. What an enchanting, abstract expressionist mood IR paints here. Damn, I miss this IR. I'm tempted to say that had he toned down the synth and given full rein to the strings this would've been even better, but then again, the synth sounds do lend the ambience, so tough call.

Aaaah !!! After a long time. Great selection. Our composers are truly dream weavers. The sublime space they seem to touch at will remains irritatingly elusive for most of humanity.

Saravanan, the mp3 file is much better. I'll try to see if I can encode a better rm file of this song from the mp3 that I have and send it to bb.

Warning: High levels of corny content!
"Kaadhal enum" - an unguided tour that takes you through a museum of Raja's repertoire. Starts off like one of them trip-hop numbers(check out 'Teardrop' by Massive Attack) and slowly blending into a psychedelic mood. The guitar in the first interlude then acts a segue into one of them sweet violin bits. Psychedelic Bach, anyone? And when the singer goes "Vaenil kaala poonjOlai", you pause for a second cos' its time for the goose-bumps to run amok. And the hurried violins now accompanying the pallavi makes me think of 'Hai Rama'(Rangeela) for some reason. Well, the return journey is just as eventful and of course, by the end of it, leaves you with the inevitable thought of what Raja could've been if he had decided to explore this side of his creativity more.
*sigh*

This SOTD is hallmark produce of IR from his vintage years , amazing prelude. Unfortunately, singer Murali does not fit the bill here, as the rendition sounds obtuse and lacks expression.

Panju's lyrics make vaadi en kappakizhange a piece of literature but what an imgaination and enthusiasm IR had got then!Amazing!Try this song everytime you take a walk in the night.
MuraLi along with Radhika,Caroline and Shoba Shankar would remain the ultimate conundrums of TFM.Persoanlly i feel PJ would have done a better job.But for a debutant Murali has come out well.
But Saravanan,IR reminded us about Ponnoviyam again in "Poomalaye"(Pagal Nilavu).
When I saw Kazhugu in 81( without knowing that it had an English original) we were discussing that SPM modified his "Thunive Thunai" to make KAzhugu.Particularly the scenes when everyone would deny the existence of vasanthi(vanitha) looked like a repeat.
Dr.Samuel Grubb must have done the base chorus for the "Narabali" scene music.Babu's camera work was splendid.Rathi, a disgrace to the healthy Soni kudis was the sore point of an otherwise interesting movie with neat script, good music and loaded with the right mixture of entertainment values.(Forgot YGM,the tasteless comedian of TF)

I am trying to fit in the interludes of Kanne Kalaimane into this song's interludes.Vijay, you can try it out.

OISG, I remember only the first interlude of Kanne Kalaimaane right now and I can say that it would be a perfect fit in SOTD(minus the percussion which would be a distraction for this song). Today's song as well as the first interlude of Kanne kalaimaane predominantly follow the Harikamboji notes.

OISG,
>>>(Forgot YGM,the tasteless comedian of TF)<<<
I am surprised at this comment. Many in TN (including me!!!) consider YGM as the comedian with timing next only to Nagesh! Remember him in 'Raaja Paarvai' and 'Manmadha Leelai'?

OISG,
I second your thoughts on YGM.
