Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Heard my first generation copy of "kaNgaL iraNdum" on my headphones numerous times yesterday. It most certainly is "paRandhaenum thaeduvaen" both times. (aduthu en kaadhula koaLaaRu sollaatheenga!)

Kutram purindhavan song… I recall an incident. We had been to ThiruvaLLur to attend a function, some years back. To return, we reached the bus station in the hot sun. veyyil koLuthuthu. I was shocked to see numerous thaLLu vandi bajji kadai’s. May be 100+ ? Entire bus stand was filled with boiling oil and bajji smell. AppavE kumattal. In addition, this song “kutram purindhavan” came in the air from a nearby audio shop. After CSJ’s -100c nadukkam, MRR started with his thavaLai style.. That’s it… complete vaandhi… andha pattu mudiyara mattum vomiting… yesterday when I read bb’s preamble, ayyO again vayiththa peratichu… andha padaththa paartha enna agumO? :-))))))

Song of the Day: raasathi ennusuru from thiruda thiruda.

- Sung by Shahul Hameed. Music by A.R.Rahman.
- Observer wrote this in Kannadhaasan Vs. Vairamuthu TFM Symposium Topic 4: Vaarththai Prayoagam:
When it comes to word play in lyrics, I think VM is under some virtual pressure that makes him not make a good use of his poetic wisdom. The industry is going thru a crisis today for want of lyrical taste blended with linguistic ingredients of the theme. VM, as being a key player in TFM lyrics today, has to maintain the status quo by bringing stuff that the producers and MD's will be able to sell. Otherwise, he will be forced to close down shutters like others did in the past.
Also there is another factor which would give absolutely no room for improvisation in the lyrics is the URGENCY. I have heared many stories about VM delivering song over the phone (kizhakku seemayilE). How can one possibly look for quality in lyrics when you give him/her just 10 min? Obviously VM is not pressing himself to be choosy about the content of the song in some situations.
When the fact remains that not many movies or situations demand for an enchanting lyrics, VM always responded well when it comes to Tamil Folk songs.
"antha kazhuththu thEmalaiyum kathOra machchaththaiyum pArpatheppO?
antha kolusu manisirippum kumri iLanchirippum kEtpatheppO?
karuvELan kattukuLLE karichAn kuruvi onnu
suthi(sruthi)mARi kaththuthammA thonaiyathAn kAnOminnu"
from the song "rAsAthee onnenaipu nenjukkuLLe..." (thirudA thirudA)
Look at the choice of words in the first lines to desrcibe the woman the hero loves. It is so natural in the sense that even though thEmal is considered a bad symbol on woman's beauty (also a disease), he is able
to see his own regard to that spot. Also VM is very very natural in using the word 'suthi' instead of 'sruthi'. ( I know 'kAtRu' was once pronounced as 'kaththu' by renowned poet).
Also I like the interlude chorus in this song
"kadala kattukkuLLa kaiyadichu sonna puLLa
kathula ezhuthanum pombalainga sonna solla"
I have no words to praise these lines, all I can say in support of VM is ,
" oru pAnai sotRukku oru soRu patham "

- This was Shahul Hameed's first song in TFM, I think, though usilampatti from Gentleman may have been released before. His life was tragically cut short due to a fatal accident.

Saravanan,
I remember Radha Ravi mentioning Durai as the maker of 'vEli thaaNdiya veLLaadu'. In any case, there were two veLLaadus with the same vintage viz., 'vEli thaaNdiya veLLaadu' and 'oru veLLaadu vEngaiyaagiRathu'. I don't remember the direcor of either!!

I remember this song was talked about at that time for its interludes consisting of chorus voices ( IR's 'Thaamtha theemtha' from Pagalil Or Iravu was an earlier experiment- someone said the style is called Barbershop Quartet).
Gentleman came sometime in July' 93. Pudhiya Mugam was also a '93 release. And Deepavali of '93 brought 3 ARR films: Thiruda Thiruda, Kizhakku Cheemaiyile and Uzhavan. What a year for ARR!
I remember taking all my friends on my b'day ( and also to celebrate the relief of CA exams getting over!) to Albert Theatre to watch this movie :)
Lyrics wise, 'puththam pudhu bhoomi vendum' and 'Kannum kannum kollai adithaal' were also appealing.
CV- 'Oru vellaadu vengai aagirathu' was directed by Devaraj-Mohan ( a departure from IR, MSV was the MD!). Veli Thaandiya Vellaadu was directed by M.A.Khaja, I think.

Great song. Shahul's raw voice conveying the required agony and just the chorus/bass wonderfully placed to lend support. One of my all time favourites of ARR. Wish he would do songs like these once in a while amidst all the new sound experiments.

bb,
A-ha! Interpretation is an art that benefits well from a judicious dose of science and logic. If I had been blindly "interpreting", I might have said something like:
"pachaikkiLi aanaal karandhaenum thaeduvaen" can be interpreted as "Had I been a parrot, I could have hidden myself and looked for him" (karavu = maRaiththal, please note we don't want her to be "kaRandhufying" in ANY interpretation!), which would work only in a situation where the male protagonist is hiding himself in a jungle and the female protagonist, in the form of a green parrot, uses green foliage as camaflouge and attempts to find him. This ends up sounding like something out of a Ramanarayanan/Vittalacharya movie. Ergo, "parandhaenum" it is. (Q.E.D.)
Forgot to mention this in my previous post: The last line of the same charaNam is "saedhi sollum yaarum thoodhu sollak kaaNaen", not "saedhi solla yaarum thoodhu sellak kaaNaen", which is what I thought it was all these years. What a significant change in meaning! And yeah, why "thoodhu solla" as opposed to the more common "thoodhu sella"? Interestingly, "thoodhu" means (among other irrelevant things) "messenger", as well as "message". So, I guess the kavignar is saying that none of the people giving her news about him, is conveying her message to him or his message to her. Not having seen mannaadhi mannan, I can only conclude that this line is reflective of the situation in the movie. Can someone clarify?

typo: "Ergo, "paRandhaenum" it is.
Digression: "kaNNum kaNNum koLLai adithaal" sees some good creativity at work. Always beens tumped by one line. Please fill in the blank: "aaLillaamal adikkadi sirithaal --------- enRu artham". (Is he chuckling?) Really like the nakkal and thuLLal in the line "azhagu peNNin thaayaar enRaal athai enRae artham artham", with the second "artham" emphatically ruling out any other relationship ;) and the in-your-face "edhiri paeraich cholli adithaal veRRi enRe artham artham"!

Mannathi mannan - Oru nalla paatai Lab il poatu dissect pannatheengappa!Even after 50 years SUN TV Thenamuthu il intha paatu undu.
Shahul with an unusual voice ( a mix of SG Chidambaram and AL Ragavan in Bangalore Ramaniyammal pitch!) got good ones from his pal Rehman. This should be his best effort. The humming was path breaking and in all Thiruda showcased Rehman's desire for new musical experiments."Kazhuthu themal"- VM's folk roots/links keep surfacing once in a while and this is one such effort.Has "Thee Thee"been featured in SOTD?
Kutram purinthavan - BB ,nothing between us friends.Your remarks on VJ were not that serious to choose "Kutram purinthavan"!

Any song from TT (except may be kaNNum kaNNum - but even that was a clever and innovative use of Sivaranjani) is worthy of being a SOTD.
raasaththi ennusuru was the song which genuinely established that ARR had arrived and he was here (at the Top of TFM) to stay.
