Please listen to the following songs again and again and you will clearly understand the depths, breadth and heights to which Ilayaraja has gone like no other creative genius has. This is a real lesson in the most exceptional and complex of musical composition delivered just simply like that by IR for the ordinary listener:
Chandirarum Suriyanum by IR in AVADHARAM (find one like this in the next galaxy if anyone can)
Kannalen Kaadhal by KJY & SJY in Aathma
Kai veesum Thamarai by SPB & SJ in Kanni Rasi
Nilavu Onru Kanden - as above
Yen Kanavina Kellu by Hariharan in Desiya Geetham
The Dance duet in Raasayya (absolutely stunning)
Nandavanthil by SPB in Annai Oru Aalayam
Sembaruthi Poove by Mano & Sunandha in Sembaruthi
Nila Kaayum Neram Saranam by SPB & Sunandah in Sembaruthi
O Nenjame by SJ & DChakravarthi in Enakaha Kaathiru
Yengum Niraindha KJY & SJ in Idhu Eppadi Irukku
Vellin Nilave SPB & UR in Nandavan Theru
and, I am telling you this is just touching the surface, but these compositions require a lot of listening to know that evey other composer, band or group or act or whatever or anybody is just a speck of dust in the shore that of IR's ocean of music! Anyone can challenge me with any song of any other composer of this earth and tell me if I am wrong.
Long Live the Avataram of Ilayaraja

yeah rite.....even ppl like rdburman and msv are speck of dusts???
the quality of their music,i feel is far ahead of IR.......as AVR sez its only the quantity.....ppl like MSV i think are in no way mediocre!!
u cant conclude IR to be THE music composer of the century..each one has his own period of domination......i feel IR's is presently is pretty much over...his songs of the past may remain but IR of the past has GONE

yes kp - the term "speck of dust" is pretty disturbing. Also I am yet to understand how the person who started this thread concludeds the same about the future also?

Since the thread does not limit itself to TFM,
why isn't Thiyagraja swamigal the greatest composer ? He wrote , composed & sang. The only difference is the situation was always the same - inpraise of Rama.
Think about how long his music has lasted & how long it WILL last.

Dear Kiran,
It's good to know that you don't understand Tamil otherwise you will be regretting about IR's songs. None of the IR's 90's song carries any meaningful words or relates to any particular situations, so you are not missing out anything. In fact you will be better off listening to any other music in any languages. Happy listening....

ML made a good point on the breadth of IR's compositions. There are lot more to add to that breadth.
I just want to you listen to "Madai Thirandhu.." in Nizhalgal..an excellent combination on Baroque sytle violins and pop(rock ?) Guitar pieces, plus the exuberent SPB's voice ! Too bad that this song was composed in a day that did not have digital recording.
Likewise one can make a good list of IR's use of classical piano (like Chopin, Schubert). Chinnakkannan Azhaikkiran...and Yaar thoorihai thantha Oviam..and Yen Vanilae ore Vennila...IR uses in short spurts of bits (perhaps thinking that very few listeners would appreciate it) and leaves us craving for more.
There is no one who uses such things today..Why ? one needs a knowledge and the ability to write notes for these instruments ! I do not know any MD in India except IR writes notes !!!
TheOneGodofMusic's point on O Nenjame and Pani Mazhai Vizhum is indeed accurate. These are amazing songs that I doubt even IR can beat it these days. What facinates me about Pani Mazhai Vizhum..is the use of instruments and sounds (especially the start)that I rarely hear in other songs. Many be some one knowledgeable could analze the instruments in that song. May be synths..
I understand that why many young gens like to listen to ARR or others more, it is perhaps due to the quality of recording and use of digital mixing. (ARR is certainly good, make nomistake about it, but IMHO, IR has a distinct edge over the composition and arrangement). Digital makes a big difference in music and perhaps hides the absence of "soul" in music like harmony, layering and integration of instruments...
If IR simply rerecords his songs in digital many of the young generation would be spell bound..!
Just my 2 cents....

I am music lover. please restrain to discussing the music. now-a-days it is so hard to find a healthy discussions in this discussion forum. either it is provoking one persons senstiveness to a particular genre of music. there is so many personal conflicts and people like me who are staying away from Tamilnadu/India and want to just be well informed on what is going on in the Tamil World, is becoming increasingly impossible. I am not trying to get on anybody's nerves or step on the wrong land mine here. A humble request is please give more information on the arguments and while validating one's statements.

Dear guys
WE (as IR fans) or IR himself neednt convince anybody that he is the greatest !!! Give his songs to anybody - he/she will certainly become an ardent IR fan after 1 listening itself...... IR's songs are simple/melodious - never jarring. "Azhagiya kanne", "Pillai nila" and "En vaanile" are simply enough to prove that he is/will be the best......
Long live IR and his fans !!!

Dear Isai Kadavul Bhakthar,
Please join the club.... I totally believe IR is a DemiGod, if not THE God of music!!! A complete musician, he breathes music. I have a strong belief that he is the greatest genius ever, in any field, and my conviction just grows by the day. Actually, I have promised myself to give IR a hefty amount of money as pada kanikkai.
Let us not be disheartened by the IR haters snd others, after all, not everybody is fortunate enough to know to differentiate diamond from a piece of glass!!
Nice to see fellow Raja followers like me, long live the Maestro!!

Kiran,
Have you ever heard IR's song"poda poda punaku, podatha thapu kannaku"
OH sorry! you don't understand Tamil. Do you?
When you find out the meaning of it you will regret.
IR's songs are not very pleasure to listen to but a great weapon to insult someone.
Are you looking for a way out? ...

Is this "CREATIVE GENIUS" (past, present and future) does include music only or on the whole, I mean creativity as such?

Kiran,
I am happy to see somebody like you who is listening to a particular MD, even though you dont know the language. Contrary, to what some people might say, IR's song have some moral, but quite likely some people may not think it is 'poetic'. The above song, pOda pOda punnakku, might have curse words, even the sound of a boy pissing in his pants :) But the same song says, 'anba vechchu, panba vechchu veedu kattu, anbu illana mannavittu Get out' - meaning build a house with love and kindness and if there is no love just get out. So some people see things with colored glasses. I suggest you ignore them. We go to a temple. The outer walls have sculptures of demons etc. The further you go you will see the god/deity with all its glory and grace in the inner sanctum. If people dont go to the temple because of all these bad sculptures on the periphery of the temple ? Whose loss it is ?
If you speak any south Indian language with some effort you can many of the songs of IR. I listen to his compositions in telugu, kannada and malayalam with little help from wife in translation. I specifically suggest malayalam songs in the recent times. Because IR is giving pop/modern rhythm songs in tamil but his usual style in malayalam. For eg. maalai en vEthanai in sEthu, now oliyilE therivadhu in azhagi etc. There are IRs experiments in modern rhythm and his usual melody, but the malayalam stuff (eg. kochu kochu santhoshangal is pure IR :))
ravi..yes I think the new generation might still like old IR songs because many of them are very rhythmic or have a fast tempo. Nowadays, even if he tries to do POP songs they are very 'tempered' and may not appeal to the 'fast' generation.

The above song is in a film called 'en raasavin manasule'. Listen to 'kuyil pattu' song in that. I am sure you will really enjoy it. Good recording, nice balance, gentle orchestration, decent lyrics. All on www.raaga.com.

Is IR's singing considered part of his creativity???
