The much awaited "NANDHAA" film songs (Music : Yuvan Shankar Raja, Direction : Bala) are being released today (21-10-2001). Kamal Hasan is releasing the first audio cassette and Bharathiraja is receiving it, at Hotel Connemara, Chennai.
The songs are totally fresh & different, and not the usual Yuvan's latino-type music. This album can easily be compared to some of the best of Ilayaraja when he was at his best.
Hear the songs and enjoy.
(The sample audio songs will be posted here tomorrow - 22nd Oct, 2001)

Iam a fanatic of IR, I really belong to those days where he was at his peak, I was doing my college 2nd year when Nayakan was released. I agree to an extent what "TRUTH" has said about IR fans not appreciating ARR's work. Infact I WAS one among those who vehemently argued that ARR could not match IR in any platform, until recently. Now having seen (or heard) some of his recent numbers (Alaipayuthey, KK, Thenali), I changed my mind. This guy (ARR) is very good and very good in his own way. One thing, He is very cautious in selecting his movies. I've seen IR wasting all his talents on horrible movies like Pattakathi bairavan, Karumbuvil to name a few.
As such, I feel film music is something that has to blend with the movie and it has to give life to the movie. Which ARR does really a great job(alaipayuthey).
I do agree YSR is also very good and he is improving a lot.
Considering the level of competition these days, especially in Bollywood and Kodambakkam, ARR has done a great job.

All that I like about Yuvan is the originality in his songs. Moreover he is Raaja's vaarisu. Nandhaa has proved tha YSR is versatile.

When we talk about choosing Movies, I appreciate Raaja for his attitude.
He tried to give his best regardless to who the diretor/producer/actor/actress is.

Venki,
Yes I do appreciate IR for his dedication and hardwork irrespective of movies/directors/producers etc.. The scene has changed a lot these days. Movie making is a business. In order to be successful, You will have to choose the product and the market carefully, which I believe ARR is doing fine. Also I recall one of IR's interviews, where he made a remark that, He regretted that he did not pay any attention to other stuff in a movie other than his job (composing music).
Now His sons YSR and Karthik are not doing the same mistake, I could see the great difference in Karthik in DUM,DUM,DUM. Also in YSR from NANDHAA.

ash i appreciate ur view...becos me too a IR fanatic..it would seem like one of those days where MSV fans wouldnt want to accept IR ...
madhav ..
regarding ur view as to ARR is not delivering goods..i dont think i am gonna agree with that ...
"thenali " was a differrent work ..ARR'S use of trumphets and diff kind of music..yet the songs were ""hummable..and "porkalam " and swasamae"songs stood out. "lagaan " was a great work..even "zubeda" was diferent...its just that he is too busy or money minded to work in tam movies... if u are still hoping for ARR to turn out nos. like gentleman and kadhalan ..he is gonna dissapoint you ..becos he's come away from that type of music...
madhav how can you say ..HJ is a waste...his minnale was a winner...i have seem "majunu " and "12b" top the charts... his music is sure catchy... you can wait for him to score in a variety of movies before you make the comment.
coming to your apprisal of YSR.. he is talented and upcoming ..and you have mentioned his music caters to all the people...do you really think so...what do you mean by that statement ...so far he has made jingle nos...that the youth wanted..nandhaa is a fresher from him real..mature stuff...so wait till YSR ..BREATHE LIFE INTO TFM..

I think the songs are very much aligned to the theme of the movie. I just wonder how the songs are picturised and used in the movie. It'll definitively breathe life and emotion to the scenes. I personally liked all the songs. Good effort.

ash, truth and madhav
i do agree to your points on the change that has happened over the last few years with regard to taste of the masses.
One very interesting and actually deplorable fact that i have noticed in this site is that, there are very few(i repeat VERY FEW) moderates. By moderates i mean , ppl who listened and appreciated IR,then understood the fact that his peak was over and it was ARRs time when he produced good quality music. And the same ARR now succumbing to the lure of fame and glory(not to blame him !) and producing not really his best work for TFM..(case to point..Thenali does not rank anywhere among his best.reviews and cassette sales indicate that..porkalam cud be ur fave..but the masses did reject the music of thenali..unlike Alaipayuthey and KK which were huge hits). Moreover the recycling of ARR's tunes by himself has made him quite unpopular with music lovers..and hence the backlash in recent times. This doesnt in anyway denigrate his true talent..but doesnt really bode well for him too.
YSR in this scenario is seen as a breath of fresh air..a good music director..with great talent and innovation. He is not yet ready to be proclaimed the next ARR..but has all the talent in him to reach the peak..at the same time..lets not disregard the fact that the king himself..IR is still doing good music..albeit for art and non-commercial movies/features and that HJ,KR and YSR are coming up with goods..with regularity.
Here is for a good future to TFM !

I have to disagree if you believe that HJ can be classified with ARR, or YSR as a good MD.To me HJ has produced nothing original. If I wanted to hear ARR music, I'd go out and buy an ARR CD.HJ is merely giving us pasted together hits of ARR. I don't believe that he is giving songs of class or regularity.
Truth my statement that YSR is showing that he is catering for the audience ismeant in that films like DHeena, Thulluvatho catered for the younger audiences, and now with Nandha, he has proved that he will be able to capture the older market as well. You seem to think that I am talking bad of ARR, but I am not.I believe he has done a great amount for TFM, but I feel that due to his other projects, he is not spending as much time with his TFM songs as before and therefore we are hearing translations and music that really isn't his best.
I Didn't say that YSR is going to take ARR's place, but merely that he will be the No.1 MD very soon, because ARR cannot be no.1 forever. I feel that there is no other MD other than YSR at present who will achieve this status.HJ cannot be brought into this topic at all.

TamilNadu Regional Audio Sales figures . . .
No.1 : Shajahan
No.2 : Nandhaa
No.3 : 12-B
and of course, you all would have listened to Shajahan songs. The initial push is because of Vijay's star value. Very soon Nandhaa will be in First place !!!

thathuvavaathi,
What about 'Thavasi' ? ;-)
To be honest, I went to Tamilnadu last weekend and I could hear 'Shajahan' songs in many places, Nandha ... only in one music shop :-) May be the reason is the 'rasikar'base Vijay has ...

thathuvavaathi,
I posted a request to you earlier which went into archives immediately, Let me repeat it once again - Is it possible for you to mail me ? I don't find your mail id here,
I have a few concerns in the way AndaL's thiruppaavai varikaL are used in Nandha - It is not exactly what AndaL wrote - your guys have jumbled the sentences, I won't mind if this change gives some good meaning to the 'new' paasuram, But that is not the case here, The real meaning of the Thiruppaavai is spoilt here which hurts me a lot :-(
When EVERY other song in this album has wonderful lyrics (I would say Nandha is the best album in recent times in terms of Lyrics - Probably next to Bharathy), Why this happened to AndaL's thiruppavai varikaL ? I didn't expect this from a director like Bala who gives lot of importance to lyrics :-(
I can give you exact deails on what AndaL wrote and what is there in the movie and why I feel the meaning it conveys is not correct - may be in a personal mail if you are willing to listen (I know not many producers do that :-)
Hope you take my comments positively and convey it to right people,
NagaS

Hi NagaS : Please check your mail.
Though the AandaaL paasuram lines, and a few words, are modifed, done to give importance to the last two lines of the current lyric. It was done only after consulting one of the famous connoisseurs, who is well versed in both Tamil and Sanskrit, and is also a leading Kadhaakaalatchebam vidhvaan.
To my knowledge the meaning IS retained.

OTOH, the "aadhmaiva aadhmano bandhuhu" pronunciation is certainly wrong, and I am not denying that. It was done deliberately to give a 'base' feel in the beginning of the song (that doesn't mean that I am supporting that change ;-)
