Does anyone remeber the lyrics for this piece from the movie KARNAN ? It goes something like "Ayiramkarangal neeti azhaikinra thaye potri", it is a verse thats sung in the background while Sivaji is praying to Surya, and at the end of the verse, while he is leaving, Surya warns him about Indra waiting in the diguise of an old brahmin ?
Also i cant seem to find any audio of this very beautiful verse either ? Does any one have it ?
Thanx

I wish somebody could release recordings of BGM scores for Ayirththil oruvan, karnan, puthiya paravai, thattungaL thirakkapadum and kalaikkOyil. You have the complete gamut, Mid-Eastern, Hindustani, Jazz and Carnatic covered. Since kalaikkOyil was about a veeNai vithwAn, MSV has used the services of Chittibabu for the BGM. 'thattungaL thirakkapadum', IMO had a scintillating BGM score with the greatest part being, the scene where Chandrababu (a half-wit) dances in the club. The music dished out is a bit comical with a jazzy (as in jazz) feel.

Oh!God!Konja Neram ...is it not Saranga?
The Ananda Bairavi ( Poi Vaa Magale!)flute piece is really brilliant that even a good MD like G Devarajan could not avoid the shades in "Sabari Malayil Vanna Chandrodayam"another good anada Bahiravi number. The Poi vaa song is by Radha Jayalakshmi /Soolamangalam ?
SL ,I was told that Balamurali was introduced to the movies by MSV-TKR for the telugu remake of Karnan (Iravum Nilavum).Any idea? This was before Kalaikoil or moreor less at the same time.

OISG, here's another one for you, another great number, 'kEttathellAm nAn tharuvEn enai nee maravAthE' by SPB-PS in 'thikku theriyAtha kAttil', set to raggae, superb arrangement, tune et all, similar confusion.
The prelude of 'pOi vA magaLE' and the first interlude with Shehnai (& flute maybe), the grandeur, positioning and the conception deserve nothing but the highest praise. The veeNai counter-melody when the pallavi of 'kaNgaL engE' is played by the sitar and xylophone, the usage of Shehnai and Sarangi in general are to be savoured and retained in memory for eternity.

Is "Chandrodhyam oru pennanatho" under the same confusion category with Behag confusion?
The "Malargal pooti" piece s thala is also interesting.(Raga flirts with Suddha Saveri ,Arabhi)
You can find the solokas during traditional bhajans set to this thalam.Interestingly these slokas will be chanted with everyone sitting around a "Kuthu Vilakku".

The problem is with Angefire sometimes not allowing
audio relay. Try this direct link:

SK, thanks for the link and for making the truly wonderful experience possible. I had been actually quite prejudiced against this song for reasons unknown, but not any longer. A very tastefully composed song with violin, flute, shehnai playing great phrases (in the prelude) that would prompt the listener to keep rewinding the tape and to keep asking for more. The prelude is a medley of raagas with N3 being used in addition to 'Kapi like' features. When you listen to the pallavi, the first line touches N3 in addition to G2 and M1 (Keeravani without d1), the following lines have D1, D2,G3 and N2 but the last 2 lines traverse the same notes as the first , notes of keeravani without d1. Whew!!!! As OSIG pointed out, the beat changes in between and marks a change of raaga (if at all) to Arabhi. The orchestration and the phrases put out by the instruments are beautifully done. Esp the Shehnai piece in Sudha Saveri and interestingly, this small phrase makes its appearance in the 'His Highness Abudullah', 'dEvasabhAthalam' song. The tune for the songlet 'karNan thantha piLLai' has a great tune and includes N2 in the end. Compare this with today's composers who struggle to come up with even a passable tune for the pallavi and charanams. Songlets are unheard of, these days and beyond the dwarf-like composition skills of these MDs. Saranga, flute, violin, clarinet, Shehnai and a few unidentified instruments....grandeur and skillfully woven around the tune.

That's heavy technical stuff for me!
I just found that dhooL doesn't have two of the
Karnan songs that are discussed in this thread.
So I have put them here:

http://guppy.mpe.nus.edu.sg/~mpessk/assorted/aayiram_karangal.rm
In aayiram karangaL neetti it looks as
if only TMS could handle the high pitch part at
thazhaikkum Or uyirgatkellaam.

..and the lower pitch, by PBS. As a digression, I am looking forward to collecting the 50's (or atleast pre-pAvamannippu) songs of PBS. Any pointers? I thought his voice was even better than what it was in the 60s. Thanks for the new links.
OSIG, 'chandrOdayam...' is also in behag.

Sriram lakshman, How come - substantiate your "I thought his voice was even better than what it was in the 60s" with a few examples . i think that PBS was in his elements thro the mid sixties.( songs in P Magal, sumaithangi, k. Neramillai, nenjam marapadhillai, ithaya kamalam, ramu , veera thirumagan, veera abhimanyu etc etc were all released in the 60s only.
I would like to know about the 50s songsas i am a great PBS fan

'ennuyir thozhi' is a solo song by PS - but picturised as a group song - there is no chorus in the song.
similarly, 'poi vaa magale' is also a solo song by Soolamangalam, picturised as a group song - there is no chorus in the song. In this particular song, in the picture, Savithri will repeat the word 'poi vaa' three times at the end of each stanza and all the three times, her face will be shown in three different angles.

Onion, I have said "better", his bass/base in his voice was more pronounced in the 50s. This diminished somewhat in the 60s owing to excessive assignments. He sang a whole lot of Tamil songs, atleast a 100 songs in a year in Telugu and was the leading singer in Kannada and add to all this, the absence of track recording. He did great work in the 60s too, but his voice was just better in the 50s. Listen to 'ondru sErntha anbu mArumA', 'malarOdu viLayAdum', 'mAlayil malar sOlayil', 'ithuvE vAzhvil AnanthamE' etc.

Sk
It wasn't that only TMS managed the high pitch. The first part sung by TMS would be for some other artist. The II part "Thazhaikum oor" you will have Sivaji (the main character) singing and hence the distinct high pitch and the focus on TMS s voice.
But the sad aspect of the whole episode was the movie was knocked down by critics (Kalki review i read somewhere) when it was released.Imagine there was no mention about the MD ,songs ,singers, ragas,Shenai,UBK,Sarangi.
It is heartening that most of us born much later (after 1964 )are able to visualize and appreciate the creative genius of MSV-TKR.
SL,TKR deserves a separate credit for the recording and arrangements.
PBS s voice was on the vane after 1965-66 movies.1958-64 was his best period.Pava manippu,AVP ,KN etc. But Ramu -1967 (Nilave)was an exception. For eg "Javre Jav" from Kumari penn (?) had a good mood but PBS sounded too heavy.A far cry from his "Madi mela Madi" days.
Similarly the Padinal oru paatu had a bubbly tune ; a young KJY would have done justice to that song.
SL,Thanx for the Behag confirmation."Malargal pootti" .. .when it reaches "Vaa Vaa endru" has the "Ne" which differntiates Aarabhi with Suddha Saveri.Anyhow one swara should not make it aarabhi ,,i agree.
PBS would live

OSIG, about TKR's contribution....Abdul Hameed, the famous compere had an interesting piece of information to share, in the MSV-TKR vizhA in Singapore. He said that he had witnessed some MSV-TKR composing sessions where MSV would be at "it", animatedly giving instructions to the musicians and improvising etc. TKR, he said, would be the calming influence. TKR, I am sure took care of the recording aspect, even some of MSV's 70s songs did not have the recording quality of the late 50s-early 60s songs he did with TKR !!! Listen to 'paRakkum panthu paRakkum' at swara.com, the movement of every instrument behind the melody can be discerned pretty easily (and I have fallen in love with the arrangement in this song). Compare this with 'Arambam indrE Agattum' or 'minminyai kaNmaNiyAi' where the bass score can be heard only when there is a gap in the melody !!!

Iravum nilavum could have been recorded better. The Dolak/Tabla sound overruns PS s voice at the start. But hats off to the interlude.
But i find all the Sridhar movie songs recordings better with good balance.I was watching Unnidathil ennai koduthen yesterday in SUN.The song travels from western beats/instruments to nadhaswaram/tabla smoothly back and forth.

Thennan keethu unjalile - what a melodious song by PBS & SJ.
