PS is monotonous.
This is a premature comment and this shows how much of exposure U has on her songs. Without listening her songs properly and with a narrow mind U have commented like this.
I understood that U are familiar with kannada songs. I can list few kannada songs which shows her versatility in kannada.
1. Viraha Nooru nooru tharaha
2. Arerere Gini rama
3. Bandhe baruthava kaala
4. Jhalala Jhalala jhala thare
5. Iva Yaava Oorina Maava
6. HoovU Cheluvella
7. Cheluvaantha chennigane
8. Cheluvinakale Baala leele
9. Elle iru hege iru
10. Billigiri rangayya
11. Olave Jeevana sakshatkara
Don’t U find difference in any if these songs ?
Each language has it originality. Speaking about kannada’s nativity, it is “bhava geethe”. Don’t U think she brought the nativity in “Bandhe baruthava kaala” and “Iva yaava Oorina maava”. Next the sea-shore people’s style song “ jalala jalala jala thare”. Being a telugite , How beautifully she sing the song without spoiling the language. Then come to Viraha song. How wonderfully she brought the emotions of a Young girl !. Do U think, anyone can replace that song ?. Recently chitra had reproduced it for a cassette. You can find the difference. Don’t U think “Arerare Gini rama” is entirely different from the other songs? Another one is “Baala Bangara neenu “. Speaking about pathos, how many songs you need? “elle iru”, “Naa thalalareno”, “Usire Udala”, “Goodalli thai hakki”, like many . She excels in semi-classical songs “ cheluvantha chennigane”, “cheluvinakale baala leele”, “raga ninnadhu”, like many. Like that, number of lullabies like “muddina gineye baaro”, “Dharanige giri bhaarave”. How many duets excels with PBS ? “ Uthara druvathim”, “Nee bandhu ninthagga”, “ Nannedhaya Mathella”, “ Oduva nadhi”, “ nee mudhitha mallige”, “baalondhu bhava geethe”, like we can find a list of super and superhit songs. You can find her songs in all variey, that too without spoiling the language, with perfect emotions. Just listen VijayaBhaskar and PS combo songs. If U hear without bias U can understand the beauty in her songs. ( same kind I can give a list of songs in all the four languages)
What are the Major Qualities of a Good singer ?
1. Sweetness in voice
2. Voice Clarity
3. Pronunciation
4. Expressions.
5. Versatility
1. sweetness in Voice:
No one south India can defeat PS . Her voice is so sweet, it is accepted by Lata mangeskar and SJ( In “Susheela-50” program).
2.Voice clarity:
a. It is accepted by everyone including ARR and no one is nearer to her in this category.
b. VJ comes to the second place.
3.Pronunciation:
c. PS is the reference for all new singers in pronunciation. She is a perfectionist and she got a open voice.
d. VJ gets the second place.
4. Expressions:
My personal view is “ It should be perfect with song. It should not be more or less”. She produced the perfection in “Bhaavam””. I can explain it with a single movie “kandan Karunai”. She had six songs for three heroines. Savitri is a mother of lord kandan with two songs a high pitched virutham “arumuga shanmuga” and a beautiful solo “solla solla inikkuthada”. The voice clarity , sweetness and the maturity for the character was perfectly brought by PS. One song for KRV “manam padaithen unnai Ninaippatharku”, brought out the marriage dreams of young princess with perfection. Three songs for JJ , two for “kurathi”, Kurinjiyile poo malarnthu and “vellimalai , engal malai” and she excels in that variety as kurathi. Even now in most of the temples U can listen her devotional song with Soolamangalam “thiruparanknutrathil”. Do U think it is monotonous ?

The therukkothu song from "Navarathiri" is ultimate.
……………. It list will be very long. I stop it here.
You can do a research on her songs, that many numbers with different varieties with lots of emotions. It is told that women has seven stages, starts with “mangai, madanthai, pethai pethumbai, arivai, therivai, perilampenn”. Each stage has different emotions. You can find any variety or with any type of emotions in her songs. No one got this kind of opportunity in the industry, because she was queen of the Golden era of Tamil cinema which comes with lots of female subjects , part of social changes, problems of family . In this period PS proved herself the best. She is a part of us in all occasions. Deepavali, x-mas, pongal, kaarthikai, aadiperukku, like any festival. If U go school, we are listening “Jana Gana mana”, thru her voice. “Thamiz thai vaazthu”-Neeradum kadaludutha also by her .We all PS fans can give U any type of songs of PS if U require.

5. Versatility:
a. Before starting this I like to refer few words of PS . “ I never tried to do gimmicks “. (I think even lata also don’t do gimmicks.)
b. Changing voice like child: Childrens voice used to be lean. It suits SJ. No doubt. when I was watching children’s singing program in TV, I couln’t find and any kids singing like “kanna nee enge” or “ daddy daddy” . Children are so natural (without gimmicks). PS also sing for kids, “pachai maram ontru”, “kaagtha odam kadalai meethu” and when u watch the movie, you feel, it is so natural. She has sung fifteen songs in “Bakhtha pragalatha” for rojaramani(kid) and is so natuaral. Another movie “Senju lakshmi” she had sung seven songs for a child. Ladies voice suits to kids easily. So, nothing special in it.
c. Next come to sing like a boy. Why it is required when boys are there ? A women doesn’t need to change the sex for any reasons. It is gimmics.
d. Singing like a old women : In Mrudanga chakravarhy a song , “ Adi vannakkilye, ingu thannathaniye “ is for a old women , where PS shows the thickness in voice. It is natural. When a lady becomes old, it voice becomes matured and hence it will be thick.( you can refer Kollangudi karuppai’s voice). It is not at all difficult for a professional to shiver the voice little bit like old lady. When U listen “aatukutti muttai ittu “ song, first few lines will be so young and last line she shivers her voice . Is it natural ?
e. Then extreme dabbakuthu style , I can say LRE style. How popular is “yelantha pazham” song? . JJ becomes very popular because of that song and LRE’s voice is so young. This song is done by PS in telugu for VijayaNirmala. You listen once. You will change your openion.
f. Semi-classical songs: SJ had excellent number with singaravelane with high pitched “nadaswaram”. I think, PS has replied with “nalanthaana” with lots of emotion with more voice clarity. PS has another number “Mannavan vanthaanadi” which can’t be replaced, because of the power on the voice, which required for the classical song. Another Pure classical is “Nee daya radha”, PS excels in its Bhaavam. “ Thesulavuthe then malarale” , a raga maligai.
g. Folk type: PS proved in late 50’s with a song “chinna chinna izhai pinni pinni varum”. Then “aagaya panthalile”, “thenadi, meenadi, neeyadi” ( a fast number), “kalyana valayosai kondu”, “chevvanthi poo mudicha” , onna nimbi nethiyile like many. If U speak about “machana paatheengala”, yes, IR himself given a same type of song “maanodum paathayile” from kavikuyil.
h. Few equilvalents of SJ’s hits. “Chinnathayaval-“ada jenmakku(tel) is by PS. “azhagu malar aada(SJ)-Chithariya salangaikal pole(PS- paavai vilakku), “putham puthu kaalai(SJ)-Malargal nanainthana paniyale(PS),” sundari kannal oru(SPB-SJ)-Kaatru veliyidai kannama(PBS-PS), Nadhiyil aadum poovanam(SPB-SJ)- Thangaratham vanthathu(BMK-PS), “ Thennankeetru Oonjalile(PBS-SJ), thendral Urangiya pothum(AMR-PS), “kanmani anbodu” (kamal-SJ)-Anbulla Maan vizhiye(TMS-PS), “then sinduthe vaanam(SPB-SJ-tamil and kannada)-Mrogine veena(PS-tel), Kaatril endan geetham(SJ)-Raagangal en jeevithangal(thiruppam-PS) like many.
i. Club-dance : PS has some decent songs like “ Anbe anbe anbe(Paadum vaanampaadi, Paartha gyabagam illayo like many.
j. Duets : Even Now MGR-Shivaji film duets are leading. “ Paalakkattu pakkathile oru Ammanji raja” ( konjalum kulavalumai enna oru song!) is a sample. So, PS is leading. Her voice synchronize with all singers including SJ, because of the voice range. PS can sing in base voice also.
k. Will You agree to compare Savitri and silk ? Even Silk done some good roles in few movies. Or Is it possible to compare savitri with sridevi for acting ? I don’t think. Like that, PS cant be compared with any other singer.
These are samples.
PS is the singer who set the definition for light music in south Indian music( ofcourse, jikki also, but she retired early from industry), and all others are following. She is the reference to all singers in south. Even though she is a fan of lata, she don’t follow her blindly, and brought originality in her singing. But, in SJ’s singing style is copied from lata and asha. In any language, PS mould herself to give the best. Her voice never shrills.
You listen all the songs sung by PS+SJ. It will be more than 100 in all languages. You can definitely feel the difference. “ Kaalathai ventravan nee”, “pallavi ontru mannan ketka”, Kunguma pottu kulunguthadi”, “azhagan, azhagan perazagan”,”en kathai than un kathayum”, “poomarathu nizhalum undu”, “niranthu vaazhga, needoozhi vaazhga”, “Isayarasi”, “maathooru raamakka” “nenjukkulle singakutty” .. like many.
Pl. writes a word after thinking twice. Just by creating some false allegations, and if you repeat it for so many times, it won’t be true. First listen all songs without partiality and then U justify.
My First Choice is PS. Some days back SJ was my second choice. But after listening her songs in tel. Which was originally sung by VJ are “Megame, megame” and “Inraikku en intha Ananthamo”, I could feel the greatness of VJ. SJ performed very normal in those songs. Now my second choice is VJ . Chitra is not grown so much to compete with these three legends.

PS was very selective in kannada and malayalam. In kannada Most of her songs are with viajyaBhaskar movies and big banners, because she very busy with tamil and telugu industry which were very big till 1980. In malayalam also the best MD was devarajan like MSV and Vayalar is like Kannadasan. Most of the PS songs were in that combination and most of her songs are hits.
Till 1982, PS was no.1 in tamil and till 1992 she was no.1 in telugu. You can see the list of movies in tamil upto-1982 and U can find more number of songs for PS. After Ilayaraja's arrival also she was maintaining her market upto 1982, because of shivaji films, devar films sathya movies and AVM banner. Alongwith that other MD's like SG, KVM and MSV were using PS as the main singer.
It is a known fact that IR was thrown out from the recording studio by V.Kumar, because of the misunderstading between PS and IR. Even then, he was forced to use her from the first movie. She has sung more than 300 songs under hid music direction. You can see the list in PS+IR combo page.

PS bagged national awards and last two awards are after 1983. She got one state award of tamil in 1989. she bagged CinemaExpress award in 1988. These are the proofs which shows even after 1980, she was holding a reasonable market.
