  Hi...(i'm a newcomer...so please don't trash me too hard ;-)
  reading these posts, i get the feeling you can't like both A.R.R or I.R. I agree totally with what Vijanth said. We should be proud that both from South India and I believe they should not be compared.
  ALthough it was A.R.R who influenced me towards tamil music...i listen to both now...

  Hi guys,
  Chill it. Illayaraaja and Rahman alike are good. Just because u idolize one does'nt mean other is incapable or bad. In fact, I love both their music. Ofcouse due to time pressures both have lifted, copied or whatever. But, think of it this way. All the other music directors lifted too. What did they acheive? Like Anu Malik, Anand-Milind or even Deva? Both IR and ARR are achievers. Maybe with time Rahman will do more fun stuff. Illayaraaja has been around for so long that everyone idolizes (including me).
  
  Give everyone their due respect! And love good music.

  Day before yesterday - MSV
  Yesterday - IR
  Today - ARR
  Tomorrow - Someone
  But, TFM is really lucky to have good composers to give good music.
  By trying to findout the mistakes of human beings, here everyone is trying to find out the mistakes in music.
  One is worried about raagas used.
  Another one about the instruement.
  Third one on beats.
  These people are not real music lovers.
  Real music lovers love the music.
  Eventhough I don't like KJY's prounsation, I like his songs.
  Once again, Love Music than the composers. Then u'll not have enemy to fight like this and u'll love from MSV songs to ARR songs.

  adhukaga dosai dhan idliya vida best nu solla mudiyuma, each thing is unique on its own, so arr, ir comparison waste, while i was driving yesterday, i was listening to 'TAAL' that moment i thought arr is really great, after some time i switched on to jhonny by IR , appo thonichu IR dhanpa best nu, see constant is change let us accept it, but IR ku konjam thannadakam irundha nalla irukum, adhu ille adhan avaroda downfall ku karanam

  For almost 10 years i am listening to the tamil music or i should say IR's music. i believe that i could find some kind of originality in his creations. he will easily communicate to the listener just by music alone. but when we just look deeply into the recent hits by ARR i could find something. for ex. just listen to the song snehidhane from alai payudhe. just replace the lyrics with some thing... still could you love that music? i really doubt. so, ARR gets a lots of boost from Vairamuthu's lines ...this is my perception. but soon we will know this is true or not...as he is composing for thenali without Vairamuthu. if that dream of IR and VM combination comes reality...we can pat ourselves that we have done some 'punniyam'! :-)

  Forget MSV, IR, ARR, KVM, GR, SVV, CRS, Papanasam Sivan and all those composer wannabees. Discuss my music alone (that (m)akes (u) (sic)k). My decision on the above 'composers', MSV is as bad as IR who is as bad as ARR and the rest.

  coorecta sonninga.....MSV and Isainagni r too good to be compared with Mr.Raajkumar.Idon't know what got into his head that he is given a statement like this...Anyway,God bless him in his near future for atleast composing better music(which,so faar,he has not done any,or as far as i have seen and heard)

  VM is just an aid for Rahman's success. The BIG reason is Rahman himself. Its like saying that MSV is just an ordinary MD and his songs were good mainly because of Kannadasan.

  I can list out songs which are NOT GOOD TUNES by RAHMAN purely supported by VM's golden words....
  Just some examaple...
  
  Kannukku maiazhagu....pathetic school rhyme tune...could pass off as a song because of VM words...
  
  Uppukaruvadu....A simple Dappagunthu song ...bearable because of VM
  
  Yaaro Yaarodi..another school rhyme....
  
  
  Just listen to Nathiye Nathiye ...song ( i do not kno which film ...) do you think the song would have an impact without VM,s soulful lyrics.....
  
  Give a thought.... Why ARR is not good in BGM,s his music LACKS ( i do not categorically deny though ) the soul...........& in songs he is a BIG hit ....!!!! It is 10 years since he cam e into being & he is not able to improve in BGM ...but he has maintained a GOOD quality in songs....right from his first film his songs have GOOD lyrics.....nobody can deny that.....!!!!
  
  I give credit to ARR for working after the lyrics are made OR may be giving the lyricist equal chance unlike IR whose many good TUNES were spoilt by poor pathetic unimaginative lyrics.

  i understand you said only BIG. But i wanted the "THE" for VM and DMK. Its like you said -- for X's success Y is 60% reason. I said that if you agree that for Y's success Z is almost 100% reason then I would agree your statement. Because I feel the contribution of DMK to VM(especially nowadays) is faar faaaar more than that of contribution of VM to ARR.
  
  If you argue that kannukku mai azhagu as great lyrics then i pitty you(Please read for a different view on kannukku mai azhagu song -- http://www.indolink.com/tamil/cinema/Features/Misc/algorithm/algorithm.htm). I would say VM's lyrics, nowadays, are not so good when compared to VM of earlier years. In his earlier years itsef VM has shown his ability of writing such types of song but definitely not to the stale extent of present days. VM IMHO nowadays is a hype(sorry to say this); VM earlier was faaaar better. I seriously doubt whether VM now can write simple but powerful lyrics like oora therunukittae olaga purunjukittaen.(well now don't come to any conclusion that like -- then VM was the main reason for IR's success. then i would again say a big NO. VM was a big reason for his own success during those period thats all).
  
  well, whats great about the lyrics "uppu karuvaadu"? believe me i sort of hate the lyrics "yaaro yaarodi onnoda purusaen" esp. that purusaen word and its pronounciation. i am comfortable if i sing "raaja raajadhi rajanindha raaja" for the tune of "yaaro yaarodi". Here i am no way talking about the tune is good/bad. I'm only talking about the lyrics.
