I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

I have not seen virumaandi(should i have to:)) but as someone mentioned the narration sounds similar to '3 deewaaren' which had a doc film maker juhi chawla interviewing three prisoners on their death row(Naseerudhin, jackie shroff and nagesh). Each one of them give their version of their crime, though only one of them is aware of what actually happened in all the 3 crimes(A very interesting movie). Juhi helps one of the prisoner to escape from the prison(i dont know if rohini helps kamal to escape).

c~p,
ive seen the movie only once.that too sitting in the third row with all these whistles and screams. nothing too special about my observation but all credit goes to kamal.
do u remember the scene where kamal fights with kottachaami and make him bleed? thatz shown twice and during the first narration by kothalan ,a guy standing outside will shout "police varanga". this is shouted at a normal voice since he is quiet near to kothalan. whereas in the second narration by kamal, the same sound comes from a distance since kamal is far away from that man. DTS was used very effectively. i was stunned! this is the first scene i noticed . there must be so many scenes i must have missed.

kdot,
I still maintain what I said though, that is a really good observation. All I had observed was the different camera angles and change in facial expressions...
1) The scene which you mentioned. Kottaisaami bleeds during Kamal's narration.
2) The scene in which Koththalan sez he'd give Annalakshmi to Kamal (during Kamal's narration, Koththalan actually had a bandage on his chest)
3) The scene when Koththalan spots Kamal and Abhirami. Koththalan's reaction differs but Kamal's action is the same!
4) The scene in which Abhirami saves Kamal from Koththalan - the one after the Karbagraham song.
5) The scene in which Kamal finds 'appaththa' dead. The madavailakkae song used in the two narrations had different voices.
6) The scene in which Abhirami calls Kamal inside, while he is happily drinking.
These are the scenes I guess, in the entire film, as far as I can remember.
And as far effective use of DTS, only one scene struck me while I was sitting in the theater. During the Panchayath scene, someone behind Kamal speaks and this voice came through the rear speakers.

CP your observation was very good
What I liked as the directorial touch of the entire movie is Abhirami hanging herself after climbing on the bull
that was terrific touch to the movie and a good thinking by Kamal.

I saw the move. I liked a lot of aspects about this movie...Dialogues and screenplay are pretty good. But over all, I wouldn't call it as Kamal's greatest movie.. His greatest is yet to come. There is a lot of violence. Well the story needs that kind of violence but kamal could have reduced that a bit. That pasubathy guy has done a brilliant job as a villian. He is an amazing actor. I think he is here to stay in tamil films industry for a long time... He even overtook kamal in quite a few the scenes. The movie is quite dominated by kamal and pasupathy. As a director, it is a big success for Kamal. He has made a lot of local people appear on the screen for the first time and yet made them act so well. He has concentrated in every bit of the screenplay and he has given importance to every little character in this movie (e.g nepolean's mother who is just an 'extra') Needless to say Ilayaraja is there from start to finish with excellent BGM here and there. The title music is amazing.
A very well made movie. I hope this movie becomes a hit for kamal and IR at least for their hard work they have put in this project.

hi,
i am no major fan of kamalahassan, but virumaandi is a clear winner all the way..
one story, narrated thru two different people is kinda unique in tamizh cinema.. every time its narrated, and whenever there is a repetition of scenes, the D.O.P uses two different magnifications. for eg. if its a long shot of kamal sitting during kothalan's narratios, its a mid shot of the same scene, during kamal's ... very well directed film.
Kudos to pasupathy and the guy who acts as the corrupt cop. hmm, didn t pasupathy act in kannathil muthamittal, if am not wrong? (as a terrorist) .. what abt the cop guy? he looks very familiar.. please let me know if he has actged in any serial before

Another Additiong to the 'great direction' list:
Koottaichami (OAK Sundar) is usually not shown wearing vibhoothi. In the scene after Kamal slashes his forhead, you see him wearing a thick layer of vibhoothi, but through the vibhoothi, you can still see the scar of the slash. It is as if he put the vibhoothi to hide the scar. The continuity is brilliant.
There are many more great moments like this in the movie.
People like Kannan here, who say "Kamal is confusing US" should speak for themselves. If they are confused, they should say 'I am confused'.
Hope to see the movie a third time this week.

Can anyone clarify.
I Thought Second trial was a murder's kamal has committed after abrami's death and pasupathy for nepolian's death and the were vindicated for those 24 murder's.

the rear speakers doesnt mean its a DTS effect you can have rear speakers with normal surround sound 5.1 or 6.1 DTS is more pretty much more clarity. But its nice to hear that they actually used the rear speakers cant wait to get d dvd. I hear Kamal is goin to release the dvd in a few months he said in an interview as to curb piracy for his movie.
