I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan -
Delete all such data from your mindbank - starting now!! :-)
Thanks, and nice of you to remember.
Of the two songs you've offered here, I've heard the Mangala Vaadhyam duet (and this is strange, my copy of the song is also a dangler - the first 2 mins are missing!) but the song from Aasaikku Vayasillai is completely new to me. Where do you find these?... VRC? :-))
A few days ago I was going through some of my old radio-show compilations and chanced on another duet that never got it's fair share of airtime - and for all that it was racy, pacy and had all the zany IR touches:
Aala Asaththum Malliye Malliye...
Ennavo Panndudhu Ennaiye hmmm hmmm En Manam Suththudhu Unnaiye - VJ-SPB turn up the heat deliciously. The "Valliye Vallye" refrain - an eager cry and such cutesy impatience - brims with secrets, shrill and soft.
And instead, all we got - all the time - was "solai pushpangale" and "ilaya nila" - 'til it was enough to hurl anyone into transistorised despair, away from all the earth's solais, and running without an upward glance at the sky! :-)

Saravanan: Good to see you back with the VJ compilation. But I thought "Neela Malargal" was an adaptation of "Anand" starring Rajesh Khanna and Co. I vaguely remember seeing the Hindi movie on black and white TV whe But I guess I was mistaken.

Saravanan
Thanks once again
I believe Anurag was remade in malayalam first before being made in Tamil with Sridevi and Laksmi Mohan. The songs in Malayalam were equally good. (Remember DD days). Isn't Neela Malargal was the first movie KRVijaya acted as a widower? (she had refused to act as a widower for many years).

Saravanan,
I have not heard "kuzhaloodhum" before. It is a lovely song. "rajathi kungumam" I am hearing again after decades. Thanks for the latest instalment. I remember watching an afternoon show of "Mangala Vadyam" in a packed theater, hence I had always thought that it was a hit movie.

Naaz, 'aaLa asathum' is a no doubt 'asathal' song, probably overshadowed by the grand 'suga ragamE'
RR, Neela Malrgal was the remake of Anuraag. Ashok Kumar- Major S, Nutan- Vijaya, Vinod Mehra- Kamal, Moushmi- Sridevi.
Bala, Can you please tell us the details of the Malayalam version? It would be good to listen to the Malayalam equivalent of 'idhu irava pagala' too!
Neel, glad you liked 'kuzhaloodhum kaNNan'- it is a wonderful song!

It seems that VJ is all set for a grand revival in Malayalam: A compilation of her 'golden hits' is to be released:

Thanks for the link. Alas, the fontfiend still lives inside my computer....and refuses to do Indian vernacular!~ :-) You might just have to give us a gist of the piece. Have they included Dhun Dhun Thana in the compilation?
Aala Asaththum, in my opinion, is far more inventive then Suga Raagame. Although the latter was the hit from the film, I think it had more to do with the "TLN" timbre that took over the TFM scene for a brief period beginning with Madhana Moga Roopa Sundari. VJ-SPB songs for IR were not promoted on AIR. To this day, one might chance on a Gowri Manohari or Ilakkanam Marudho on the airwaves in TN, but songs like Aala Asaththum, Kaalam Maaralaam must be lost for good.

Naaz, I am sorry I cannot read Malayalam. But what I gathered from one friend is that 5 of the total (16?) songs are by Salil Chowdhary.

Hi Sara, Naaz!
Here's a quick translation of the article:
********************
Vani brings to mind not a particular melody, but an era of music. We had a songstress here who sang with an enticing swara. A time when the likes of Salil Chowdhary and R K Shekar were in full bloom – HMV brings back these fond memories with its newly released compilation “ Golden Hour – Vani Jairam’s all-time favourites”.
The cassette contains 16 evergreen favourites of Malayalis. The album starts with Salil Chowdhary’s 70s hit composition “Naadan pattile maine” set to Vayalar’s lyrics. Music lovers will also recall fondly that Vani had returned to enthrall Malayali minds with a soft lullaby from “Maanathe Vellitheru”. "Golden Hour" renews the memories of a golden era. Of a time when the music fraternity considered Vani's voice as specially crafted to render the melodies touched by Salil Chowhdary’s fingers.
“Golden Hour” reminds us that a majestic voice with the sublime harmony of bell chimes is never to be forgotten or ignored. Digital technology enhances the listening pleasure of Vani’s golden voice.
Of the 16 tracks in this album, 5 songs are of Vayalar’s lyrics set to tune by Salil Chowdhary.
*********************
Looks like a 'must-have' album.

Saravan
I was reading my post earlier, I had incorrectly mentioned Sridevi with Mohan, it was the husband wife pair Laksmi- Mohan Pair in the Malayalam Remake of Anuraag, named Raagam. Had the wonderful music of Salil Chowdry. (including the soothing and ever enchanting - Nadanpattile Maina. VJ sounds like a Human Maina in that song.). The "Irava Pagala" equivalent was "Evide Kattinu Vasantham", whcih is a tune I believe I have heard in a Hindi & Bengali languages.
MusicIndia Online has the songs
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/VV000H00
Question:
Is the beauty of the song included in the Golden Houre?

Apologize. I just read Suresh's post to my delight to note that this song from Raagam was the first song in the Golden Hour.
I cannot forgot those DD days when these songs from Raagam used to be a regaular feature.

Blame it on the aura, but I did think that you were fluent in Malayalam (cf: Sangeetha Sagaram aka word pictures with music!:-)!)What remains of my grasp of the language is more "mal" and less "layalam"!
This prompts this: What you doing at the malayalamanorama site then?? :-)
Suresh -
Thanks for the quick translation. Good to see you around here again. I am all for mm links now! (Saravanan, yes! :-))
I didn't know VJ had a solo in a Fazil film. Does anyone have a MP3 file of the song from Maanathe Vellitheru...? Don't know anything about Nayaka Palaka, either.
Bala -
Naadan Paattile Maina is a vintage song. I have no doubt that it is one of VJs (personally) cherished solos as well. Although the song that was really popular in TN (Chennaiyum,Suttramum) was the duet from Rasaleela with KJY: Kiliye Kilikiliye Neelanjana Paingkiliye...Another SC classic.

1979- Part 7:
Krishna Jayanthi Special : )
Let us resume following the VJ-MSV trail of MSV, and in this part of the journey, look at 4 songs from the same film- PVT Productions’ suprabatham. We had earlier seen how K.Shankar had tasted success in varuvaan vadivElan, by rediscovering the magical combination of mythology laced with social themes. In the following years, he kept repeating the formula, setting his themes against a diverse range of mythological lore.
suprabatham was the next in the series. The film dwelt on Vaishanavite shrines and beliefs, set against the backdrop of some common people and interesting happenings in their lives. The film was produced by P.V.Thulasiram. K.R.Vijaya, Saratbabu, Muthuraman, Nambiar, Latha, Jaiganesh, Sripriya and many others were in the cast.
Kannadasan wrote the lyrics, which were set to tune by MSV. VJ found place in 4 of the songs. The 5th song was ‘unnaithaan nee aRivaai, ulagengum naan aRivEn’ by TMS & PS.
198. kaNNanai ninaithaal- suprabatham- KJY-MSV
This was perhaps the most popular song from the film; a classic duet filmed on Jaiganesh and Latha. If I remember right, Jaiganesh appeared as a sculptor, and MSV intelligently incorporates into the prelude the action of Jaiganesh’s busy chisel.
kaNNanai ninaithaal sonnathu palikkum
kaalangaL thOrum ninaithathu nadakkum
kaNNa gOpala… radhakrishNa sridEva
kaNNa gOpala… radhakrishNa sridEva
ponmaNi vaNNan sonnathu geethai
poomagan maarbinil thavazhndhavaL radhai
nallavar selvathu avanathu paadhai
naadiya manithan ulagathil mEdhai
VJ and KJY present a splendid essay; there are scintillating nuances in each turn. And the reverberating refrain ‘kaNNa..gOpala’ lingers on.
Apologies for the poor audio quality:

199. thirukkOyil katta eNNi- suprabatham- SGR- MSV
A stirring song, sung evocatively by Seergazhi Govindarajan & VJ. Going by the lyrics, he is striving to raise a temple for the Lord, but is beset with disheartening hurdles. Disconsolate, they appeal to Him to help them in their endeavour..
thirukkOyil katta eNNi poruppOdu vandha ennai
veruppOdu paarthaayE perumaaLE
palar midhithaalum vida maattEn thirumaalE
VJ makes a fetching entry with
dhinam thOrum sEvai seiyya varavaa..
ranga srivilliputhoorin thalaiva!
They pray to the Lord in His various glorious abodes—Kanchi, Kumbakonam, Srivilliputhoor, Srirangam…. MSV adds a native touch by employing the chendai when they pray to the Lord at Guruvayoor. Chorus voices join the fervent petition.
The long song soars to a cascading crescendo, where he gives the Lord an ultimatum to take their lives if He cannot grant their wish..
Then, like the calm after the storm, VJ calls resonantly ‘narasimha.. vaikuntaa.. sriranga..’, and continues the soulful prayer…

http://in.f2.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/sarva1511/vwp2?.tok=bc2hB_TBeWZRXZ0B&.dir=/&.dnm=thirukoyil.mp3&.src=bc
200. adi radha, sri krishNan vandhaan- suprabatham- MSV
I seem to remember Sripriya dancing for this scintillating song.
adi radha sri krishNan vandhaan ragasiyam pEsa
adi naan avan poojayil ennai marandhEn aanandamaaga
poovai eduthEn maalai thoduthEn
punnagai vairam aLLi koduthEn
sEvai purindhEn thiruvadi meedhu
thirumagan azhagukku eediNai yEdhu
The intricately conceived charanams consist of twice-repeated winding lines, filled with beautiful thamizh. And VJ, as usual enjoying the challenge posed by the exacting mellisai mannar, comes out with yet another exquisite rendition at a breathtaking pace.
A marvelous song from Kannadasan, MSV and VJ.

201. uNmai therindhirukkum oruvanaiyya- suprabatham- MSV
Another soulful VJ solo, this time a poignant plea to the Lord:
uNmai therindhirukkum oruvanaiyya
kaNNa nee uLLangaLai purindha iraivanaiyya
vennai thirudiya un kaNgaLukku
un veetil thirudiyavan iNam theriyum

Her innocent husband has perhaps been wrongly accused of a theft in the temple. She is indignant that ardent devotees like them should be subjected to such an injustice. She confronts the Almighty, accusing Him of turning a blind eye to the travesty. Being omniscient, He is aware of the identity of the true culprit…so why does He put them to such hardships? She vows to cut off her hands if the Lord doesn’t step in and free her husband.
It is a matter of wonder how VJ manages to portray the plethora of varied emotions- chagrin at being let down by the Lord, anger at His continued unperturbed inaction, anguish at her husband’s predicament, and steely determination to stir the Lord into coming to their rescue… the cascading emotions, one after the other, parade in glorious nonchalance..
.....All in a day’s work....Bravo!
