Remember the Music Director trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music directors of Kamal Hassan's Alavandhaan. They seem to be missing in the Tamil scene for the last 2 years and they are doing really good in the Hindi field. They have given solid musical hits in Hindi such as; Mission Kashmir, Dil Chahtha Hai. I think they can be brought to the Tamil films again. I feel they are definitely better than Deva and a few others. I think they are the best as far as Hindi Film Music goes after A R Rahman.
I would like healthy comments who listen to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and have a fair knowledge of Hindi Film Industry.

Hello Ehsaan, big fan of you guys. I have one question for you. How do you, Shankar and Loy plan to compose the music for the Shahrukh Khan-Preity Zinta-Saif Ali Khan starrer "Kal Ho Na Ho". You guys are doing the music right? Please let me know how you guys are going about it?

Naaz,
I thought the pronounciation problems were restricted to south indian film songs (?). This 'it-is-cool-to-mispronounce' tamil attitude is something Ehsaan is probably not aware of.
Ehsaan, again thanks for you time. I will watch for the guitar in your compositions. I have a fancy to bass lines more than guitar chords (which I dont follow :)) but any guitar work is something I find very 'sonorously musical'.

Hi Rajiv we have composed all the songs for KHNH and recorded 4 with two left to sequence and record. The music will show another side of us. The lyrics are by Javed Saab and have turned out beautiful.

Kiru -
I can give you examples of recent hindi songs, in the last five years, which have glaring mispronunciations by the well-regarded, and "cool" artistes like Chitra, Vasundhara Das, Srinivas, Anuradha Sriram, AR Rahman, Shankar Mahadevan,...and this is not just an "accent" issue, which one can overlook and hope that more exposure to "northern" cultures would rectify in the long run. These are serious errors of enunciation and delivery. I have held back only because this is a forum regarding Tamizh Film Music, and the occasional digressions into HFM are determined by context and relevance.
Ehsaan might know how these things go down (or up) on the recording floor. But if a renowned and celebrated poet/writer like Javed Akthar can turn a deaf ear to these aspects of language, then there is no merit in belabouring this point.
"Cool" is beyond geography. It is all pervasive. Hence, all this emphasis on "drums" and "percussion" and "fusion." Words in a song, and authenticity, tragically, are deemed merely "incidental."

Do you guys use guitar midi controller & synth or just directly record from guitar?

Thanks for the info. Are you avoiding just because it lacks something which you can achieve in direct guitar recording or simply because it is expensive?

John,
Re: guitar and midi - you dont want people to do the right thing, huh ? :)
Music is meant to be listned to live, and fasters songs with dancing. First of all, recording them and playing it back, itself is a compromise !!! And when a man knows to play guitar, you want him to type things into a computer and play it with some electronic equipment !! How does it matter which is costly ?
Sorry for the outburst, I really would like to see well-recorded, real instruments in an acoustic environment.
(Naaz, you and me are in a minority. The film music/music industry is seeing a breaking of music into different genres, I think. Time to abandon film music and look for albums to our taste. A song is about the lyrics, the feelings, the tune, adept/interesting use of an instrument .. ..we need to encourage this sort of work in non-filmy albums)

Hi Kiru,
cool down buddy! This is Naveen. you know that I'm an acoustic instruments fan! Sometimes midi is useful as it can be manipulated without disturbing the playing style (like scale change etc..) Let us see what Ehsaan says.

Ehsaan, I had one more question if you don't mind. Will "Kal Ho Na Ho" release this year or next? I heard Shahrukh Khan had some back trouble and that he's okay now so he can shoot for this film soon. I thought it might release towards the tail end of the year. Do you happen to know when the movie will release Ehsaan?

Hello Mr Ehsaan: (assuming that you really are the Ehsaan from the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio!)
Just felt like saying this to you, as Shankar Mahadevan is your colleague and friend: I am simply dumbfounded by SMs Breathless song. I have never heard something so miraculous even from the veteran legendary singers of the 50s to the 80s. A cliched question: How did he manage to do THAT! BTW, I also loved another song from the album...I dont recall the lyrics, but it has fine shades of Bhoopali in it.

Hi av
Breathless has been recorded and edited on a computer hard disk system ( Shankar openely says this ) there are 3 joins on the piece. It was a novel concept.

We use a lot of midi sequencing and midi instruments.Awhile ago I had posted details of all the equipment we use. In addition to all this programming we record a lot of acoustic instruments like flutes dholaks etc. I do not use midi guitars as yet but If i would use them it would not be as an alternative to real guitar playing but as a different creative tool.

Ehsaan, if you get hold of IR's Mahadev (1989)you'll certainly find it one of the best avant-garde works even today! Also, Chhaila (1993) is incredible though a Tamil original it appears IR composed the songs with Hindi potential in mind. "Chahungi Tumko" is one of quintessential
"Hindi" song ever. How much of that Bollywood feel can a composition get is shown by IR himself! People like to recommend Sadma (1983), but I find all the tunes just off-the-cuff type though appropriate for the mood of the film.
(I find you have not mentioned Ravindra Jain or Salil Chowdhry, two of the most consummate composers in the class of IR!)

I am sorry to tell you this Mr. Ehsaan. Not many people here are interested in music per se. Most of them are just hard core fans of IR and their objectives are simple.
Everyone must have listened to IR.
Everyone must be impressed by IR.
Everyone must kow tow to IR.
If you do not make the required obeisance, you will be condemned.
These are the same people who made multiple votes at the BBC site for the Rakkama kaiya thattu song.
These are the same people who tried to glorify IR for sitting in the funeral truck for thespian actor Sivaji.
But unfortunately for them and fortunately for the rest of us, they could not manipulate public opinion at large and IR in reality is a shadow of what he used to be.
Unable to face up to reality, they have resorted to unleash violent reactions in this forum, samples of which can be seen in the above few posts.
Please respond to only genuine questions, ie those without ulterior motives.

Lollu Party,
In this rendez-vous kind of thread which allows fans and amateurs to interact with industry established pros, I am amazed by your typically petty-minded attitude of flauting AND thrusting your parochial mindset. (This is the only thread where you have taken pains to cobble together a couple of meaningful sentences, history is witness to the 100s of one-lined meaningless anti-IR tirades you dumped on myriad threads!).
Let me put things in perspective without thrusting my views/preferences on others. As any would know, IR was the preferred MD for seasoned megastars like Rajinikanth, Kamalhassan for over 50% of their acting careers. (If you count their peak, its over 90%. Leave alone the fact that S.Ind's best singers spent 80% of their careers with him). It was HIS music(esp 76-93 period)that made musically-inclined youngsters take to practice and composition on a serious perspective. Quite a number of participants in this forum have composing experience and have a presence in mp3.com.
Frankly I dont see any prob when mp3.com-and-beyond composer requests an established pro for his fave IR pick....or lesser still, merely ask his opinion. More so when the MD has 870+ albums, asking for a couple of picks is just the tip of an iceberg.
Sorry for the digression. Kindly avoid future diversions and keep these precious discussions on a rational tone.
Thanks
