Vijay, Suresh, Srikanth :
Good to have (kind of) converged on our opinions on this...
By the way, speaking of the emotional factor in IR songs, I too have felt it on quite a few IR songs. In fact, that is a very strong factor that makes all of us root for IR so strongly, because his music stirs our heart and makes a deep impression on us. Well, this is a very interesting aspect, and I have started a thread on that. So, let's discuss more about it.... :)

Friends,
One major and most important point that all of us ignored to mention is the above mentioned Emotion factor - I was listening to "Varam thandha saayikku" by P.Susheela in Sippikkul Muthu - what a beautiful use of violins and veena and flute and what an absolutely mesmerising lullaby.
Mood , man, mood - name ten songs of any other composer which fit , suit the mood of the situation so aptly and so beautifully.
Mr.Srikanth - argue pannavendum yenbadharkkaaga argue seiyvadhil prayojanam illai.
Listen to GURU and YM - these two qlbums have enough in terms of quality that they would outshine any other albums of the recent past.

Raja should retire from TFM.
Not because Raja is not good but because TFM does not deserve Raja. A man of Raja's talents frittering it all away on scoring music for crappy films.
TFM is too restrictive for Raja - he himself has admitted it. It is time to cut the millstone around his neck and go on to new ventures.
Instead of giving me 25 movies a year give me one HTNI or NBW or India 24 Hrs a year.
Let lesser composers on who is going to copy which song for the next disco number.

No one in this world has got right to say Raja should retire. There is no restriction to music. Now a days in TFM lot of noise is filled in the air. New MDs are coming every day and they are just following the trend created by the man who is now mercilessly asked to retire. What a pity !

I also kind of agree with what pg says. perhaps IR should not accept ramaraajan or rajkiran's movies but should perhaps compose music only for films of Kaathalukku mariyathai, guru standards.because these kind of films inspire him more.
i had mentioned the 'emotion' factor before in old responses in an argument against srikanth
,but iam pleasently surprised to see so many of u agreeing with me on this aspect.
perhaps melody and depth in composing would automatically come with maturity and experience for ARR and KR.but IR's songs had depth as early as the seventies when he was just a younsgter!
iam always stunned when i wondered how IR came up with such a wonderful song 'ilamayenum poongaatru' when he was just a youngster, perhaps as old as iam now.
have u all ever thought along these lines?we all take his good tunes for granted, but with the various hurdles and discouragement which he was facing in the industry at that time before he established himself and with mental agonies , to come up with such tunes is simply GENIUS.
iam sorry if the above few lines sound like a digression, but what i have been trying to say to people like srikanth all along was that this emotional factor is what should make us expect more from raja in the near future.

Hearing pleasing music is a joy. As long as it comes from a person who is capable of delivering more like that, I see no reason why he should retire. I'm still wondering whether IR is aware that a discussion forum is existing or he is silently watching us. If he is, our humble request to u sir, come back, give us the scintillating melodies which u gave back all thro. We are still for you and for your music. Keep going.....forever and ever.

Romba thanksaNNE. I'm happy to see that everyone shares this feeling. :) :)
Vijay :
Yes, Vijay, your arguments on the "emotional" aspect has been the motivation for the new thread. As you see, it has struck a goldmine of thoughts and ideas. Thanks a lot for bringing this aspect into focus.
If the ability to entertain is a sign of talent, then the ability to enthrall is a sure sign of genius. IR is certainly one. No question about it !

Whatever said and done IR is one of the greatest ever who changed the concept of film songs.there was atime people used go out for ciggaretes/bidis etc whenever the songs are played in the theater.he made them to sit and listen.he may still come out with masterpieces even now.

Well .. well .. well .. Looks like you guys are not matured yet !! Why compare ARR & IR ... they are great in their own ways. IR is doing Melody & Harmony while ARR is doing Rythm & Beat ... that's all.
I'm a IR fan myself ... but i do listen to ARR's songs. In my opinion ARR's latest songs (Ratchakan & Jeans) are not good compared to older ones like Bombay, Duet & Uzhavan. Does that means ARR lost touch ? {pls give some thoughts}. Well, I don't think so. And the same thing goes to IR.
I was a fan of IR since 1976 (my birth year). In my opinion IR is still capable in offering the best. For example :-
1) Rythm & blues : Nil..Nil..Nil (Pattu Padava)
2) Alternatives : Suttum Sudar Vili (Sirai Salai)
3) Alternatives : Kaathalai Marupathu (Kadavul)
4) Upbeat & Uptempo : Ennai Thaladha (Kaathalukku Mariyathai)
5) Pop Rock : Paapa Roopa (Pooncholai)
6) Pop Rock (Home Mix) : Neengga Paartha (Kanmani Oru Kavithai)
7) Melody : Alli Sunthara Valli (Kangalin Varthaigal)
8) Jazz Rock : Yengge Yen Kaathali (Devathai)
9) Harmony : Arumbu Thalireh (Chandralekha)
10) the creativity to compose Vayasu Ponnu Manasu (Kilakkum Mearkum) for a village girls dance.
11) the mellifluous background melody for the song Oh Baby Baby (Kaathaluku Mariyathai)
Music director in India can be classified into 3 catagories :
1) Deva, Vidyasagar, Sirpi & S.A. Rajkumar etc.
2) ARR, Karthik Raja & Yuvan Shankar Raja
3) Illayaraja & M.S. Visvanathan
Group no. 1 : 100 % lifts from western hits/music
Group no. 2 : 50 % lifts from western hits/music with 50 % of personal creativity ... but, has a long way to go.
Group no. 3 : Once in a while lifts from western hits/music ... creativity extends from western
classics to eastern classics.
... now let's talk about IR & ARR ... ... both of them have done kuppai songs, melody & etc
Kucchi Kucchi Rakamma was ARR's Kuppai & Pudhu Ponnu Maappillai was IR's Kuppai !!!
They also did a few stale music in Ratchakan (ARR) & Kaadhal Rojave (IR) ... so does this means that both of them deserved to be kick out of the music industry ??
hah ... the fact is that ... each songs in a movie is supposed to be requested by the Producers/Director/etc., therefore both ARR & IR has to comply with these request. Hence sometimes their songs are stale !!!
Just because SONY accepted ARR's Vandhe Matram does not means he is great ... SONY is much more interested in making money through ARR's music because he is new, young & popular. But, it was different in IR's case. SONY rejected IR's symphony because he did not concentrate in his filmy music (from 1993/4), furthermore he had some misunderstanding with Rajni (everyone knows about this) and not denying the misunderstanding with the popular movie directors. Subsequently, lost his popularity. And he had this caste problem. OK.
Now, the problem with IR fans is that they don't appriciate his latest contributions, but they'd
rather prefer to stick with Annakili & 16 Vayathinile !!! If IR can adopt with the late 20th
Century, why can't you guys do the same thing ?
On the other hand, ARR's fans appriciate ARR even if he does stale music !!! (they don't argue)
Note : It's really awkwards to compare ARR with Deva as some people do !!! Never do this !!!
For your information, ARR did a few mistakes :
1) didn't give good songs for MUTHU (consequence : IR is the music director for rajni's next movie)
2) mediocre performance in Ratchagan & Iruvar (consequence : both Maniratnam & KT kunjumon is not booking ARR for their next movie)
3) ROJA's 100 % lift from YANNI's musical album & the copy of OO LALALA (minsara kanavu) from a American Pop song (consequence : fans realize that ARR copies !!!)
... hhmm ... for IR's fan ... congratulations ...
IR might be releasing his Symphony No. 1 this year 'cause he is regaining his popularity and position. Maybe now SONY might be looking at $$$$$$ through his Symphony !!!
Some guys don't understand what the word "maestro" means. They think anyone can be a maestro !!!
The title maestro is only given to those who are capable of producing orchestra music. Someone who can produce multiple layer of music ... not a single layer & accompanied by drum beats !!! You can't address a person as maestro just because u like his beats !!! The europeans will definately kick you if you tell this fairy tale to them !!!
Only a person who understands & performs classical music (western & eastern) can be a maestro.

Hi Ganesh
The song Kuchi Kuchi is lifted from Sentamiz then moziyal -
You cannot say MSV lifted songs - tell me one or two. MSV was out of the scene when you were 3 years old.
Roja's score life from YANNI - I dont accept this.
Only the bass score in kaadal rojave song was lifted from Maddona, all others are original
I am not able to understand what your are upto!
The topic is Raja should Retire or not ---
Well .. well .. well .. Looks like you have not matured yet !! (just kidding)
Good long posting ganesh...

Hi Ganesh,
Is it true that IR approached Sony for his Symphony ? Where did you get this news from ?
If Sony rejected his offer for $$$ reasons, then even if IR "regains his popularity and position", they won't be able to make any $$$, as western classical is an unknown genre in India (and it is extremely difficult to make a mark in the international classical field ( & sales) )..
I wish IR succeeds in this endeavour.
About AR, I disagree about Muthu. Wasn't the album a hit ? I personally believe it's the best among Rajini's recent movies. Like some else mentioned in this forum earlier, it might have been too hip for Rajini.
How do you know IR is doing Rajini's next movie
(when Rajini himself doesn't know what his next movie is) ?; Atleast he hasn't announced his next project, has he ?
Same with ManiRathnam. ARR is doing his next movie "Dil Se"; and the songs are supposed to be very innovative and fresh (according the latest Filmfare).
About Kunjumon, it isn't like ARR has done all his movies. Kunjumon produced smaller movies between his biggies and he used other MDs for his lower profile movies, didn't he ?
Also could you care to give us some accurate info about MSV's lifts? Same with the 100% lift of Vangelis (for Roja) ? And what "American pop" song are you referring to (about "ooh la la") ?
And finally, who gave IR this title "Maestro" which is prominently used all over ? How many people in Tamil films actually know what it means ?
Dev
