//all the songs you have listed as love songs with a tinge of sadness are all,in fact, sad songs.
Nalla koothu//-what do you mean?just because these songs evoke feelings of love in you these dont become love songs with melancholy.these ARE sad songs period!
nallq koothu than aiya-just because I am IR fan you think I know nothing about old songs.kashtamda saami!
when you think neerodum vaigaiyile is a love song-it does not become a love song.similarly you seem to be in confusion about un kannil neer vazhindhal-one of your listing exercise lists it as helplessness-another calls it a love song-sort of helpless lovemay be?
BTW IR has done a song for situation equivalent to some vague song called thannam thanimaiyile which only you (or your dad!) remembers-this was in vazhkai-sivaji and sujatha starrer. This was an entirely forgettable song just like your thannam thanimaiyile.
one thing you forget is-50 -early 70s when sivaji was in top-there were so many movies with situations which made people cry buckets-hence the need for these emotionally charged songs.what you must appreciate is the fact we are not looking for ideal situation songs-rather the fact that IR was able to give emotionally charged nos in an emotionally low key scenario.
for eg-please tell me which song is better-nilavai parthu vaanam sonnathu-or nilaavae vaa?
ammamma thambhi-or oorai therinjukitten or annan enna?
you know-you claim you are not a fan of ARR-you do not like IR.I think you are a frustrated MSV fan who finally has a platform to air his views!

Yaaro: just a correction Vaazhkai was a Sivaji - Ambika starrer not a Sivaji - Sujatha starrer. BTW what song is that from Vaazhkkai that you are talking about. Is it kaalam maaralaam nam kaadhal maarumaa?.
Some more old tunes that are filled with emotion. The song "Kannan vandhaan ange kannan vandhaan" from Ramu. Again dont tell me it was SGs voice.
The song "Chinna Chinna kannanukku" by PBS.
The song "Naalai indha vElai paarthu odi vaa nila" from Uyarndha Manidhan.

if someone feels IR is the best, let him hv the freedom to think so... avaru andha maadhiri sollittaaruntu pazhaya paattu list kuduthu... match the following solli... yenpa indha thevai illaadha velai? karuthu sudhandhiram illiyaa naatula? each and everyone can have his own thinking and is free to air that... none can fight with a guy who says ARR is best... or IR is best... or MSV (etc etc) is best.... let him hv the freedom....idukku poi alattikkalaamaa?

"eden, "uRavenum pudhiya vAnil" tempted to credit to ARR??"
Yeah..Eden ..how can you say things like this ? Unforgiveable :) Seriously, even if the tune is in doubt..the prelude has two or three instruments (electric guitar, keyboard/flute, bass guitar) playing against each other..I have never heard a ARR song like this..Maybe, the reverb on the vocals may make people think so. Only the other song, paruvame, can to some extent be mistaken but then again the joggers seem to take a rest during the second interlude and then continue..if it is an ARR song they would be jogging throughout the whole song :)
Seriously, guys , I thought there is no point comparing MSV and IR, both being masters (I am of the same opinion as CM) but then again searching for uravennum song on the internet ..I stumbled across quite a few gems of IR on real audio which I do not have in my collection..wow..thats all I can say..I have to get back to listening :) (Tip: check out mail-bag.com they have a quite a few songs like ninaikka therindha manamE - song kannukkum kannukkum mOthal )

Guys can we have a new rsolution. If you are a IR fan please criticise about him bad /good. If you are AR fan please criticise him bad or good. But don't drag none of them in to these seperate arguments. In this way we can maintain some respect for these two different talented personalities.

kiru sir,
two or three instruments (electric guitar, keyboard/flute, bass guitar) playing against each other
1. Pachai nerma Pachai nerma has similar stuff you had told.
2. there is song called adisaya thirumanam,
if you have heard it properly, this has the stuff you had mentioned. arr goes one step ahead and uses this kind of combination in vocals.
there are many, if you had not heard it does not mean arr cannot....mmm how many more times we got to tell this here :)

Though I appreciate IR a lot and an big fan of his I still dont think that saying that he is the king is warranted.
This is the same thing I have been trying to say over the last 6 or 7 pages of the old responses.
yaaro
what do you mean? just because these songs evoke feelings of love in you these dont become love songs with melancholy. these ARE sad songs period!
How can I have a discussion with you when you make such illogical sweeping statements? Naan pesa ninaippathellaam a sad song? Paattukku paatteduthu a sad song? Unnidam mayangugiren a sad song?
Now you know why I said “nalla koothu.”
The only reason they appear sad to you is because they are love songs with a tinge of sogam - precisely what Eden wanted!
because I am IR fan you think I know nothing about old songs.kashtamda saami!
I am not talking about general IR fans, but only about you. I have asked you to prove that you are knowledgeable about non-IR, and you still haven’t done it. Each of your statements thereafter is just convincing me that you are nothing but a HCIRF.
you seem to be in confusion about un kannil neer vazhindhal-one of your listing exercise lists it as helplessness-another calls it a love song-sort of helpless love may be?
How can I be confused when you are the King of
Confusion? :)
Don't worry, I will never be a threat to your throne. :)
Pray show me the part where I have claimed that Un kannil neer vazhinthaal as a “helpless” song.
Naan ithai unggalukku solli kodukka koodaathuthaan, but what to do..? Love does not mean teenager or young love alone; and does not end with marriage. If you can’t see the love emoting in Un kannil neer vazhinthaal, I can only say that either you don’t understand Tamil or or you don't understand Love. :)
to some vague song called thannam thanimaiyile
which only you (or your dad!) remembers-
How convenient! Now you classify all the songs that you do not know as “vague.” Very clever.
BTW, my dad has nothing to do with this forum. I made the remarks about him in response to Sabesan’s posting and it ends there. So, I hope you will stop this ......
were so many movies with situations which made people cry buckets-hence the need for these emotionally charged songs.
In other words, whatever the reason, you are hereby admitting that IR is NOT the King of emotions, right?
you claim you are not a fan of ARR-you do not like IR.
Where did I say that I do not like IR? Oops sorry, it is your “confusion” at work again. :)
I think you are a frustrated MSV fan who finally has a platform to air his views!
You love labelling, don’t you? If I was a HC MSV fan, I would be walking tall, and I won’t need any porvai. :)
Vj
If everyone can say what they want and nobody should comment on that, then why do we need a discussion forum?
Kiru
but then again the joggers seem to take a rest during the second interlude and then continue..if it is an ARR song they would be jogging throughout the whole song
Vayasu endru onnu irukkuthule? Athaan, vayasaana niraya rest edukkanum. :)

ROTFL... just a small clarification... i never meant "there shd be comments".... what i meant was someone or the other trying to impress upon that person that he's wrong or not... i dont want a jalra nor i dont want a in-ur-face PA..what wd be pleasent in a discussion is "i agree with you" or "i disagree with you" and not sarcasms or PAs on anyone, including the MDs.
hope i am clear.

I did not say naan pesa was a sad song-neither was unnidam mayangugiren-I said most of the songs you have listed are sad songs period. If paatukku paateduthu is not a sad song what else is-come on give me a break-listen to the lyrics and tell me.you are being unusually stubborn.

Peeps
The situation which u said abt that feelings of abandonment by the children and the emotional support given by the wife to the husband is very unique one and i hope there wont be many songs for that situation..
Not really. A similar situation arose in Vietnam Veedu with Sivaji & Padmini.
And another emotional packed song was born - Un kannil neer vazhinthaal en nenjil uthiram kottuthadi//-so here you mean this is is a song which you consider equivalent to thalladum song which was a helpless song-so this also must be a helpless song.
your posting from
//From: ROTFL (@ 203.106.139.126) on: Tue May 14 08:51:40 EDT 2002//-Love - Un kannil neer vazhinthaal
that is why I said make up your mind-tell me should I sing this song when I am in a good mood or when I feel really p*ssed off weith her and should I sing this when I am feeling helpless?:-)
//How can I be confused when you are the King of
Confusion? :)
Don't worry, I will never be a threat to your throne. :) //-i am not worried-when you are there to take on the mantle:-)less confused now?-I have done c and p of your own postings-convinced?
//Love does not mean teenager or young love alone; and does not end with marriage. If you can’t see the love emoting in Un kannil neer vazhinthaal, I can only say that either you don’t understand Tamil or or you don't understand Loved ?//-hurrah-now ROTFL is also educating us about love.speaking of which IR had a lovely song of his picturised on couple of dogs in love-That was ila manadhu from selvi.
CM-that was ambika. Thanks for info! The song I am referring to is something which goes like maname thudikkadhe-after nizhalgal ravi, ravinder and co ditch ambika and sivaji. He also loses his hand-pathos,pathos...

Does it mean that he would have become popular in Hollywood , too?
Let him work on India first.
To be popular, what you need is machcham.
Agreed. Also some teeny weensy bit of talent?//
//Where did I say that I do not like IR? Oops sorry, it is your “confusion” at work again. :) //
ROTFL,
nice to see you hold IR in such high esteem-for an MD who has worked in 800 plus movies with 3 national awards and countless state awards.did you read suseela's interview in kumudam?read that ROTFL-and come out of your confusion. You repeatedly keep saying that you never said you did not like IR-but I am yet to notice a posting from you appreciaitng his music.
