6 Songs : Mind Blowing!!

Simply mind-blowing
November 20
Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi can’t stop raving about the songs of Mani Ratnam’s Yuva. “A.R. Rahman and Mani Sir and dynamite together,” says Vivek on the sets of Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria’s Masti, and adds, “The six songs Rahman has recorded for the film are mind-blowing.”
Ajay Devgan, his co-star in Yuva and Masti, uses the same words to describe them. Incidentally, when the film was launched earlier this year, Mani Ratnam had decided not to have a single song in it.
Vivek also feels that Abhishek Bachchan’s is the best role and best performance in the film. “That guy’s career will take off in a big way after Yuva,” predicts Vivek.

//(may be not weak, but lacks interest).//
Yeah, may be the reason..In 'Thiruda thiruda' Rahman's BGM was good.As mentioned in AP too Rahman came up with variations of 'Snegithane' in many parts...esp during those searches in trains, the BGM is nothing but the interludes sung by Srinivas in Snegithane.Iruvar too had good BGM in parts,Rahman used silence effectively, but during certain scenes where PrakashRaj speaks, the BGM gets so loud, that you miss the dialogue itself. But obviously IR takes pains to compose BGM,he feels each frame from his heart and composes it,and that's why IR's BGM stands out.

Couldnt agree with you more Thamizhan. IR's BGM really stands out.
I think its the converse in the case of ARR. The effort he puts into the composition of each song is simply monstrous. As a consequence of this, ARR's songs are just unparalleled.
It would be actually a criminal waste if the music isnt used elsewhere in the film, and is just restricted to the songs.

Can anybody give any link or source where we i can find out the Ragas used by Rahman in various songs, jus a curiosity...
And any person having good rapport in classical music can answer this Q
Is it a rule that even film music should adhere to the Raaga structures,is there anything wrong in mixing Ragas in a single song?Usually Rahman is criticised for mixing Raagas, that's why i asked this...
Do you ppl remember subbudu's criticism on Rahman's 'Ennavale'-'Kedarathukku vandha saedhaaram'.

He has used many classical Ragas in his songs .
It is not a must in cine music (for that matter even in classical to have the song in the same raaga,After all even classicals have Raga Maalika).
For that matter lots of ARR's songs have a classical touch .
Engey enadhu kavidhai- sindhubhairavi
Snegidhaney-think its the same raaga

Kannamoochi yenaada also has a bit of Sahana raagam. The humming by Chitra in the interlude is definitely Sahana (coz thats the only raagam that i can identify. :))

Azhagae sugama from Paarthale paravasam...
I have heard some ppl saying it as Harikhamoji(spelling wrong means sorry) other calling it Sahana.
Pudhu vellai mazhai-Kaanada
Margazhi poove-Hindolam
but ARR was criticised for using Suprabatham interludes in flute in this song...
The discussions can go on this way..it will nicely sum up things instead of throwing mud in stupid somebody vs some one else wars.

Thirakaadha kaatukulley from En swasa katre..is it Neelambari? or breaks into Kedaram?
(I am not a music student, nor do i have any deep knowledge in carnatic Ragas..but have heard these here and there,am interested to know these)

I have heard some people say that Azhage Sugama is Behaak. This is supposed to be the same raga as "Kaiyil Midhakkum Kanavu" from Ratchagan.
These 2 songs sound like they are based on the same raga - whichever it is.
Coming back to AE, it was so exhilirating to listen to Rahman's voice after quite some time. But why is he so reluctant to lend his voice?!! Songs like "Dil Se Re..", "Vellai Pokkal" cannot be sung any better than ARR.
I only wish that he gives us more opportunities to listen to that magic voice.

Azagey sugama is very similar to "Na shikwa hota" from Tehzeeb.
May be Rahman used the same Raga!

Na shikwa hota reminded me many yesteryear Hindi numbers,it has peculiar nostalgic feel in it.
Kaiyil Midhakkum Kanavu" is a great song from Ratchagan..
Some conformed Ragas
Anbendra mazhaiyile from Minsara Kanavu is set on Anandha Bhairavi, with soulful rendering by Anuradha Sriram, the song is divine indeed.
Mellisaiye from Mr.Romeo is also set on same Raga(conform this)
Kaadhal rojave..Sivaranjani

coming to Vellai pookal, actually i was surprised to hear Rahman in it..till then we have heard him singing some energetic numbers, but this one shows Rahman can give a controlled and a soothing toucjh with his voice, the song brilliantly sets the mood for watching the movie.

Actually Rahman wasn't sure his voice would suit the song, it was MR who insisted him.
ARR shared this after getting his 4th National award.

" I had some golden rules when I started my first film, Roja. These rules were good lyrics, good thought, good melodies, good recording and good presentation. But I think Gentleman was to break the rule completely because Shankar wanted commercial music for the film to break the monotony for the serious subject. So we did it, and gave it full blast to them. Unfortunately the success of the rhythm-based compositions reached the masses much faster than normal Roja type of music and the trend became an epidemic coz it was easy and safe. I was pushed by producers to make similar kind of stuff. But rhythm-based compositions can be listend only for a very short time, though we put in too much energy in polishing it. But later, I realised that the golden rules were going out of my hand. I think we are back to normal"
Rahman's quote in some interview i remember ,but this one from a old Rediff chat transcript.

Yamini Yamini is set in the raga that has same swaras as madhyamavathi with the Gandahra replaced.

I also saw ARR, in Sun TV interview saying, now we are 'Ayutha Ezhuthu Background Music Poda Eppo Thalaiyai Pichikittu Irrukom'. That also kind of shows that he really struggles to come up with BGM scores. May be its a casual comment, but reflects his state of mind. He is certainly not interested in BGM and its not his forte.
