I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

Some of the reviews on this thread are very biased. If someone tells that this film has a bad screenplay,Kamal is confused, confused climax etc-it means only 2 things either they have not watched the film or they are very biased.i saw the film today in bangalore&i can say without doubt that Kamal was very very clear about what he was doing. When the version of Pasupathy is told Kamal comes across as the villain but the gaps are filled &the version changes when Kamal tells his version. The second half is neat&straight&the fact that Kamal has worked hard on his screenplay shows.i really doubt whether some of the reviewers here have seen the film. There is absolutely no overfocus on tech&it's the script&direction which is the real winner. It's got some fine touches&i have already decided to see the movie again. All i would want to tell is that anybodu out there who wants see a good, interesting film,JUST GO&WATCH VIRUMANDI.Also read the review on 'rediff.com'by Shobha warrier.

Read Rediff's review for Virumaandi at
http://in.rediff.com/movies/2004/jan/16viru.htm
While announcing the shooting of the film Virumaandi, then known as Sandiyar, Kamal Haasan said he wanted to convey the message of non-violence through a violent film.
And Virumaandi is an extremely violent film, full of blood, gory deaths, mutilated bodies, abusive language and what not. But the film does convey the intended message. The film is gripping and very well executed. In fact, I am willing to see it again to enjoy some of the finer nuances of the film. The film is a spectacle.

:-) I disagree with those who thought the movie was poor. Just returned watching the movie...
a) Narration style - a new approach, not seen much in Indian movies. The first half involves two characters narrating their version of the story. The director needs a pat for the very clever way in which the flashback scenes unfolding (twice) have been handled.
b) Performance - Kamal has again proved that his plane of acting is a cut above the rest as he has virtually lived the role of Virumaandi. But that is what one has come to expect of him.
However, Pasupathi (of Dhool fame) steals the show with his outstanding potrayal of a "real life villain" :-)...Abirami was a surprise package, to be honest...Good.
c) screenplay - Its hard to believe that there were some posts criticizing the screenplay...By fully avoiding filmatic flexibilities, the director Kamal has opted to stay dangerously close to reality while also ensuring that he does not lose grip of the plot..
d) BGM - the scenes are dominated by powerful characters (from Rohini to Pasupathi), so not much role that IR could have played..but the title card music (which is also used later in climax) has been scored very effectively..the song,"Karbagraham vittu sami veliyerudhu" has been used quite wonderfully..
Summing up, with sterling performance by all lead characters, an intricate/subtle style of screenplay and a gripping directorial control, Virumaandi is well worth your money.

this narration style was also there in Nagesh Kukunoor's '3 Deewarein'. In fact in that movie, Juhi Chawla is a documentary film maker who wants to interview 3 inmates on death row. Each of them relates their stories in flashback, in the end it turns out that all the stories are linked and there is only one "true" flashback.
I havent seen Virumaandi yet, but from what i can make out from the reviews, the format seems pretty similar.

3 dewarein was a remake of 'The swashank Redemption ' ...But i guess virumaandi and 3 dewarein are different ....
1.similiarity exists in this way :Three of them have their own versions and one of them lies ...But in that twist the reoporter is also involved ,but here it is not so ....and the plot in virumaadni very different i belive ..IN 3 dewarein teh factor of luck come sinto picture ..In Virumaandi ,the factor of 'revenge ' comes in ..

I just thought the narration style and presentation was similar.
and no, 3 deewarein is not a remake of shawshank redemption...definitely inspired though

DAE_ADMIN (@ 207.46.238.133) :
I am not sure what you're worried about. The only people giving bad reviews here are people, whom I believe, are yet to see the movie. You can tell this by their one line reviews like 'Kamal spoiled it with too much tech'. One fool even compared Virumaandi to Alavadhan. To me that's like comparing Apples to Plastic Cars.
Everyone who watched it (you can tell who they are by the detailed reviews they give)seems to have loved it.
I have watched it twice and I plan to watch it again. At least once more. I actually enjoyed it better the second time. It is an engrossing and very realistic movie, but it is entertaining and witty at the same time.
I would not agree it is 'too' violent. It is violent. The plot requires it. But I have seen more violence in Tamil films that did not require it at all.
It's a great film. I even wrote that it is better than Devar Magan. Kamal seems to agree based on his MSN interview :-)

Fully agree with mnt.
Yesterday I saw the movie. It is a Class Act. It is a fresh attempt in TF world.
Yes, there are some excesses here and there. But overall, Kamal's brilliance with the narration is fantastic. Performance of artists in AnnaLakshmi, Payikaaman, Kothaalathevar are stunning.
Raja and the Camera melt us in 'Onna vida...' song.
A Must See Movie. For all, who want to break the monotony in majority Tamil Masala movies.

Someone who has seen the movie, can you clarify the guy who played the role of the corrupt cop in Virumandi. Is he the one who acts in Sun TV's 'Metti Oli'. I thought it was, but all my friends say he is not. Please someone tell me i am right. I donno his name, but with the mustage and all he looked different.
