sk- Thanks. No hurry- take your time.
Meanwhile, I remembered the song of SCK-SJ from RMS-I think it goes-'Ethanaale Ithanaale'.
Reg. GKV, he sang even as early as 'Panam'-1952.It had a wonderful western song 'Ezhayin kovilin'-GKV and MLV! GKV's voice was really unusual and the songs he sang were really good.
PBS and PS had a nice song in 'Naan Sollum Ragasiyam'-'Kandene unnai kannaale'- PBS for Sivaji and PS for Anjali.

Vicky:
I just saw the 'ulavum thendral' song on VCD. It comes in 'pasumaiyAna Sivaji pAdalgaL' released from some Malaysian company. The song is more delightfully enjoyable with video. Padmini dances around the park singing the song while Sivaji follows her doing his silmishams that were natural in his 50's acting. It is as if the whole song was made in just a few shots. Padmini sings
en vAzhvilE ragasiyam ondru
Then Sivaji points to both of them and sings
illaRa vAzhvil avasiyam reNdu
and then shows a 'kuzhandhai thAlAttu' movement with both hands and sings
idhan yOgaththinAlE moondru
and Padmini blushes! Later, Sivaji says 'chandrA' pointing to her and Padmini points to the moon and says 'chandrA?' meaning to ask: 'Oh are you talking about that moon?' and Sivaji hits her head with affection. The whole song is very enjoyable. Very natural acting by Sivaji-Padmini. (The chemistry between the two that Manisegaran talked about is obvious!) The VCD also has songs such as 'anbE amudhE arungkaniyE', 'mullai malar mElE' and the popular piano song, 'enna enna inbamE'. That last song is from the movie 'anbu' which must be one of Sivaji's earliest movies. One of my friends told me that, it seems TRP auditioned PS for that song, but rejected her and chose Jikki instead because he found PS's thamizh pronunciation to be poor! I am not sure whether that story is true or not. Overall, that VCD is a very enjoyable one.

sk- thanks for that nice description of the song.
Again, I'm asking my doubt- is it 'Ulaavum thendral' or 'Kulaavum thendral'?
Reg. TRP rejecting PS on the grounds of her poor tamizh, I guess it must be true- Mr.Vamanan also has recounted the same incident in his book.
But even in her first song 'Edhukku azhaithaai edhukku'- I feel her tamizh was ok.

It sounds like 'Ulaavum thendral'...

Saravanan:
Like Sreedhar I too felt it was 'ulAvum thendral'. But you see, it is very possible that the 'k' sound at the beginning could have been there. When you listen again and again, there is always a doubt whether the 'k' sound is there or not. Perhaps Manisegaran can throw some light on this. He may have access to actual 'pAttu pusthagangaL' with the correct lyrics.
By the way, in those days (at least till the 70's) the pAttu pusthagam of each movie used to be released together with a movie's release. These 'thin' books running to at most 6 pages, used to be made of very thin 'newspaper-type' paper and very inexpensive (less that 10 paise in the 60's). I don't know when this 'pAttu pushthagam' release got stopped. I have with me such pAttu pusthagams for about 30 movies.. in very flimsy shape.. even a slightly strong breathing on them can tear those sheets!

Sreedhar/sk- thanks for the clarification.
sk- to the best of my knowledge, paattu pushthagams are still being sold- I remember even in my last visit to Chennai. I saw them hanging merrily, pegged by palstic clips, in shops in Luz Corner.
The only paattu pushthagam I bought was way back in 1989, when I was in College, I bought 'Idhayathai Thirudaathey'!! (Now don't laugh at me !!)
Mani Sir/Ramki- Reg. Pennille nee- I don't feel it is Jamunarani either. I have written K Rani
in my tape. Can the voice be Rani's?
Wish you all a very Happy Deepavali.

a.a has sent me another AMR-PS duet from kOdeeswaran:
yAzhum kuzhalum unnuyir thAnO
I have put it in the rareppp page. The song is not as good as 'ulaavum thendral'.
A very happy DeepawaLi greetings to everyone.

To all PS fans:
Wish you a very happy Deepavali... in BLR we are not still getting Tamil TV channels, so we listen/use heavily Tamil songs using tapes... Especially it started with the famous Deepavali song "Unnai kandu naan aada"... PS sings lovely... the pronounciation is bit different for that "vedithidum kaybu.." (it should have been Kayppu"... but I like that pro'n very much).. it was great song which will be heard as long as Deepavali is celebrated in the world...
Cheers to all...!!

Kalai- that's a duet from Parthiban Kanavu. MD-Veda. This film had 3 duets by AMR-PS. Other than 'Kannale naan kanda', there were 'Idhaya vaanin udaya nilave' and 'Pazhagum thamizhe'. Though all the 3 duets were good, 'Idhaya vaanin' is the pick of the lot.

Subbu, Neram Nalla Neram-1984 starred Pandiyan and Oorvasi, both of whom had been introduced the previous year in Manvaasanai and Mundhanai Mudichu respectively. It was a silly adaptation (sort of ) of Bagappirivinai. Here Pandiyan comes as a handicapped man.
MD was Ilayaraja. Another good song was 'En Anbe Yengaathe' by SJ.

Recently I listened to songs from a film "Vazhndhu kaattugiren"..
In that, two songs titled the same "kaaviri nagarinil kadarkarai Orathil".... sung separately by Vani Jayaram and P Susheela. I guess VJ for Padmapriya and PS for Sujatha.
VJ's version was in normal mood (good rendering), whereas PS's version was with lots of Aakrosham (anger)... especailly that line "vaRuvadhu varattum naanum peN dhaan vazhndhe kaattugiren..." and ends with "Koyilai pootugiren".. It was so emotional and PS had brought a lot of anguish in her voice. A terrific song and rendering in deed.
Any1 has seen that movie... any explanation..?
