Rani Padmini
The TKK comment was for ransacking PS voice and not to be bracketed with MCP comments - (Now i know the meaning of MCP).A comment on Padmini is not a comment on women. No one FCP throw his hat when Mythila (just an example and i assume Mythila is a girl) comments ARR or IR or MSV.
I am OISG and not Alauddin Khilji or Malik Gafoor.

vengayam,
Horses don't sing, they whinny. But when a male singer whinnies, he sings like a horse.
Now, I would like every other metaphor thrown around this forum scrutinized as such.

TKK sang a beautiful duet with PJC, 'oru kAthal sAmrAjyam' composed by Dakshinamurthy. Beautiful inspite of TKK, that is.
'kAtruveLiyidai kaNNammA' ...aah!!! A class violin prelude sets the tone and the song is on its way to enslaving you for a life time !!! GR in his elements, God bless his soul. Stanzas with different tunes. 'enthan vAyinilE amuthooruthE' and the 'kaNNammA', 'uuum' passages are a treat. Thanks for the song.
Rani Padmini, seething under the influence of imagined assaults on feminity, thy name is feminism of the Rani Padmini order.

A classic for SOTD. Plesant listening at anytime. Several times I used to imagine how this song may sound if some mejestic male voice (disclaimer - I like PBS) like Chidrambaram Jayaraman or Malaysia Vasu would replace PBS in this song.
mmm. Rani Padmini, I was the one who wrote about TKK and hence assume the mantle bestowed by you - MCP. Beg my submission, let us join and label others, Udyaya (and few others) commented PBS/IR'voice in no less terms, so let us call them homophobic.
BTW, thanks for conveniently forgetting my positive comments in the same line about PS, before branding me MCP.
please for heaven' sake come out of this typecasting.

This is more like I like! How amazing in its simplicity, how sincere in its sensitivity, and how remarkable - still - after these many years! Four Cs all the way - and diamond, dear sir, not your mall-mart zirconium!
Thank you for this lingering, vintage moment.

Talk about ruffled peacocks! Rani Padmini's comment on the "macho" statement was contextually precise, and instead of accepting the sexism in the affront, what do we have here? A bunch of die-hard defensive egos! What's more, her first volley is turned around (much like the shifting case against iraq) and attached to her next statement about TKK (which did not accuse anybody of being a d*ckhead (why bother with the obvious you say??) but only pointed out that a lesser known singer covering a legendary song for purposes of making a "living" - and look how she is mocked?
The "coy, squeaky, submissive" female/voice is a (hetero)sexual male construct. These same qualities in a (natural) male voice are used by men to scorn other men as ---- no, I don't think you need a lesson is other stereotypes and pejoratives, that should come easy. Misogyny and Homophobia - Orey Kalil Rendu Maangai - if I ever saw it happen.
Neither did she reserve the privilege of speaking to the "exclusion" of others. She only asked us to re-examine the constructs of what is "female/feminine" and as she is (assuming, but shouldn't matter even if the she is a he) of that gender, told us without a blink: roll this way, stuff this way.
Was she seething "under the influence of an imagined assault on femininity?" On the contrary, I think. She was, in a singular voice, telling us that as a woman (and a lonely spokesperson for her kind in this thread) she and her sisters were quite capable of "defining" their gender for themselves and no thank you, take your patriarchal constructs of female/femininity, macho/submissive to the nearest flea market.
Now, apparently, this truth is a detriment to free speech. Yeah, right.

PS sounds sweeter than she usually is, if it even possible! somehow, I feel this song would have been better (for lack of a "better" word) if it were a bit slower.

Thanks bb, for this immortal classic. And for Kanchana’s ‘classic’ translation as well!
One of those few songs whose appeal keeps increasing over the years, and as one’s age grows, one returns to it, and finds some hitherto undiscovered beauty in meaning--- PBS and PSyin vaayil amudhu thaan oori irukka vendum- how deliciously sweet they sound! The composition is very different from an ordinary love duet, perhaps because of the lyrics and GR’s imaginative arrangements. The bits of humming in between by both the singers do magic with the romantic mood of the song. I seem to remember a short fragment of humming by PS even after the last lines- and that gave the song such a dreamy finish, hinting at so many more untold romantic secrets—What a song! Listening to it, thuyarp pOyina--pOyina thunbangaL--!
In a period when AMR was regarded as Gemini Ganesh’s singing voice, It was GR who gave PBS his first song for Gemini Ganesh –‘Inbam pongum vennila’-Veerappandiya Kattabomman. The next was this song. In the same 1961, MSV-TKR too gave this combination a landmark break with ‘Kaalangalil aval vasantham’ and not even the melodious songs of ‘Aadiperukku’ in 1962 could halt the continuing success of the PBS-Gemini Ganesh combination.
Other PBS-PS duets in GR’s music: ‘Kandene unnai kannalae’-Naan Sollum Ragasiyam-1959 and ‘Alaippola thendral’-Thozhan-1960.
Kappalottiya Thamizhan had some unforgettable songs. Besides the SOTD, the other songs were:
Odi Vilayaadu Papa- Seergazhi Govindarajan, Gajalakshmi, Meera
Paarukkullae nalla nadu- Seergazhi Govindarajan
Vellippanimalaiyin- TL & Seergazhi Govindarajan
Chinnakkuzhanthaigal pol vilayaadi-PS
Vande matharam-Seergazhi Govindarajan
Nenjil uramumindri-Seergazhi Govindarajan
Thanneer vitto valarthom-TL
Endru thaniyum-TL
Endru thaniyum-PL
What wonderful songs! Vellippanimalai and Vande Matharam fill one with patriotic fervour to this day. And if TL’s Endru thaniyum tugs at your heartstrings, PL’s version will leave you quietly sobbing.
I wonder at the complete exclusion of TMS from the album, though.
Padmini Pictures’ (featuring for the second consecutive SOTD) Kappalottiya Thamizhan- 1961 is considered by many as among the best movies in the history of Tamil Cinema. Unfortunately the film didn’t do too well when it was first released, though in its subsequent re-runs, it more than made up for the initial lukewarm response. Sivaji’s pair was Kumari Rukmani- years later, he would pair with her daughter Lakshmi as well. Innum konja naal nadichirundhaal Ishwaryavudanum jodi serndhiruppaar! (Another such mother & daughter with whom Sivaji has paired are Sandhya & JJ).
Enthused by the success of his Veerappandiya Kattabomman-1959, BR Pandhulu must have embarked on this saga of another great freedom fighter. Selecting Bharathiyar’s songs to suit various situations in the screenplay was a fitting thought, and the genius of GR came into full play, even as life was slowly ebbing away from that gifted composer—
GR had but two other films in 1961- Sri Valli and Arasilankumari. And in early 1962, Deivathin Deivam (with another Bharathiar song ‘Kannan mana nilayai’-SJ), though having some excellent songs, failed to bring him more films. The reign of MSV-TKR had begun. Even BR Pandhulu, who had earlier worked only with TG Lingappa and GR, went to the duo for his next film Baley Pandiya. As a last resort, GR produced Pattinathaar with TMS in the lead role. Again the songs were wonderful—but it was too late—Years of hard drinking, dwindling finances, mounting debts, inability to face failure, and the agony of being shunned from the portals of the same tfm where he was the undisputed monarch of all he surveyed till even a few years back—all these took their toll and GR breathed his last on November 20th. He was not even 50 years old. With him ended the true classical era of tfm.

Naaz,
Rani should really speak through you. Your theLivurai was excellent. I particularly like the way you excused the "thrown out the window" comment by level headed Rani.
"coy, squeaky, submissive" female/voice is a (hetero)sexual male construct" huh? These terms were projected as a phantom accusation at all forumers by the esteemed Rani. I would agree with her that calling Padmini "macho" might be an affront to feminism (a stretch, but still I'll give her that, but she could've aimed her comments at the person who said it!) Regardless, the blanket holier-than-thou statement regarding TKK is laughable and totally a product of Politically Correct double-standard. What now? I got to be a female to diss female singers? I hate the voices of SJ, TKK, and Pavadarini. I don't need to be a female to state these opinions. Rani is free to give her opinions too. But I reserve the right to pass comments on her and others' statements.
And of course, you have attained great objectivity and flexibility in your egoless gender neutral state by using wonderful terms like dic*head. No matter how flustered I am, I have never stooped that low. Thank you. I'm cured of my narrow, shallow, maleness now.

bb: Bhararhiyar did not specify any ragam for this according to the book by Vanathi Pathippagam. They do not follow what he specified anyway.
