But this stand second compared to Andharangam Naan Ariven.

A nice song by SJ
SJ's voice during MSV/KVM period had some extra magnetic force which was lacking after that

bb / Saravanan -
I had not heard this song 'til 4 minutes ago. It is beautifully rendered by both the singers. TMS and SJ complement each other well in this duet - and their meld without jarring.
I find SJs songs for V-R and MSV to be free of her later "improvs" and all her line endings are clear, devoid of note shifts and throat throttles (which were the bane in her later songs for IR, IMO.) Compare this song - and its rendition to another duet by the same team for IR: "Andhappuraththil Oru Maharani..." in Deepam. That's the crux.
Rani Padmini -
Sexism, Homophobia, Racism, Casteism, Ageism...
These are part and parcel of these fora (mostly frequented by Males.) Count the number of responses to your indictment, and it should tell you how far we all are from interrogating our own gender privileges and biases.
However, more power to you! One voice of rage and dissent is better than no voice at all!

Isn't T.K.Kala the one who used to sing mellisai in TV long time back, with B.S.Sasirekha too? Didn't she also sing "kuLichaa kuththaalam" in duet?

T.K.Kala sang several songs in "Pallandu Vaazhga" including "Indru Sorgathin Thirappuvizhaa". She also sang "Sengaathae" for ARR in "TajMahal".

So it is now T.K.Kala's turn to be made fun of. Just because she sang a few PS songs at a concert so that she can make a living. After singing such beautiful songs like "thaayir sirandha koyilum illai", "poi va nadhi alaie" and the amazing "manadhil ezhudiya kadidhangal" she deserves this. None of the squeaky and submissive female singers of today can even come half way close to Kala. Continue with your ridicules.

Apparently, she's not.
But I hope there are more like her who have the conviction to speak their mind. Rani Padmini of the historic Chittoor would be flattered, I'm sure.

Song of the Day: kaatru veLiyidai kaNNamma from kappalOttiya thamizhan.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kaatruvel.rm
- A classic song by G.Ramanathan based on the Bharathiyaar song. Sung by PBS and PS.
- The complete lyrics in our Pazhaiya Paadal Pakkam: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/kaatru_veliyidai.html
- A great thread called Mayakkum Kaadhal GeethangaL : http://newtfmpage.com/forum/5634.14662.10:18:11.html that has a good deal of discussion on this song.
- Kanchana translated this song in the above thread:
With every breath I draw, oh Kannamma
I think of thy love and derive pleasure.
Thine lips like founts of ambrosia
Thine eyes steeped in and brimming with moonlight
Thine body like pure unblemished gold.
For all our lifetime on this earth
??????????????
??????????????
Thou art my sweet life/ soul, oh Kannamma
Thou art my sweet life/ soul,
I shall worship/cherish thee all the time.
All sadness and tribulations gone
When I think of thee.
Sweet nectar springs in my lips
While uttering the name Kannamma
Kannamma...Kannamma
While uttering the name Kannamma
Sweet nectar springs in my lips.
Thou art the eternal flame that grows from the fire of life
Thou art my mind, thou art my will.
Bhaskar's reply to this translation:
Yennaga Kanchana Bharadhiyar padalukku artham sollungal yendral, adhai Shakespear paadalaga mattri vittergal. Naan ippozhudhu english dictionary thedi pidikka alaindhu kondu irukkiren :)))

- Arularasan continues:
Remember the kAdhalin dhIpam onRu song? Think of a similar situation,
where bhArathiyAr is in the middle of a large plain field wandering
around and thinking about his wife (chellammA - on whom he probably
wrote all these sensous kaNNammA songs) who has gone home (piRandha
vIdu). There
comes this beautiful poem kAtRu veLi yidai kaNNammA. (My personal
opinion - please do not listen to the kappalOttiyath thamizhan
song. it's the ultimate disgrace to this wonderful song. mind you
i am talking about the music.)
kAtru veLiyidai kaNNammA (kAtRu nandRAga vIsum inthe veLi yidai - ground-il,
Oh kaNNama)
nindhan kAdhalai yeNNik kaLikkindREn (I am deriving pleasure thinking
about you. kaLiuppu comes from the word kaL. hence kaLikkuppu means "high".)
amudhUtRinai ... nin mEniyum (you and kAnchanA have
explained it well. These lines as you can easily identify are just
varNanais.)
indha vaiyaththil yAmuLLa mattilum - yenai
vEtRu ninaivindRith thEtRiyE - ingor
viNNavanAgap puriyumE
Here viNNavan, i think, refers to indhiran, the king of gods. (he is a
nymphomaniac. but that's besides the point!!!) The lines, therefore, mean
O, kaNNammA. as long as i live on this earth, you prevent me from
thinking about other women. the reason is i have already become
indhran, the king of gods, and you are the apsarAs all put together.
(Besides their physical beauty, the apsarAs have nothing to their
credit. Watch the previous varNanais closely.)
He realizes immediately that his love for her is not just carnal.
Hence
nI yenadhinnuyir kaNNammA - yendha
nEramum undhanaip pOtRuvEn
watch the next line. it's classic poetry.
thuyarp pOyina, pOyina thunbangaL This line is so sweet that
it is one of my favorite lines in thamizh poetry.
ninaip ponnenak ... pEr sollum pOzhthilE (you know the meaning.)
uyirth thIyinilE vaLar sOthiyE (He crosses all bounds and claims
her to be his virility. uyirth thI refers to kuNdalini - meaning sperm
and vaLar sOthi means AtmA.)
You know the meaning for the next line. bhArathiyA kokkA?

bb: A minor modification. KaLikkinren has the root kaLi meaning joy, delight, intoxication etc, not kaL meaning toddy. This comes in the first two lines before he sings about amudhu, meni etc.

One of the greatest Kaadhal songs as many would vouch :-)
Bharathiyaar was described as a person who underwent lots of anguish in his life, but wonder how he wrote such a lovely loving songs!! Miga inimayana vaarthaigaL, he used in such songs.
Tamil films had its good hands to canvass Bharathi's padaippugaL thru its strong popular media. few classic examples are Vedhala ulagam, K.O.T, Ezhazvadhu Manidhan etc.
Some of B's songs were repeated in many films viz., nalladhOr veeNai seidhu. But this "Kaatru veLi idai" was not, I guess. PBS and PS sing efforlessly, with due credit to the great guru G Ramanatha Iyer. PS's ummmm (twice) after KaNNamma in the 2nd charaNam demonstrates the girl' closeness to her lover. One must enjoy how Savithri steals the how with very expressive face and eyes. It was a close-up shot. Great clarity man... I love this song ever.
Thanks BB!!

Rani Padmini,
Bravo, I just read your blistering posts. But by labeling others as MCPs you have only left yourself the privilege of bashing people, namely, "Take your shy, coy, petite, passive women and throw them out the window."
And now T.K.Kala has become the trailblazer feminist, a non-squeaky, and certainly not so submissive female according to you. I'm learning new things everyday about MCPs and feminism. Please continue.

bb,
You're taking unnecessary slack for your recent selections. Even with a washed out PBS, "Thendralae" was a damn good song for all the other elements. The "Ganga Gowri" song is the kind of revelation that I hope to get from SOTD. And "Kaatru veLiyidai" joins "Ninnayae Rathiyendru" as the best underexposed Bharathi songs. My personal wish was for A.M. Raja to have sung this and brought even more romance and tenderness to the male vocals of this song, but PBS doesn't disappoint.
Now, I sit and wonder what sacrilege I've committed, ageism, racism, nazism, somnambulism? See the trouble with free speech? It invariably offends somebody. Perhaps we should all suck up to every artist and say only good things. Sorry, I left fascism a long time ago.

bb, Fatwa withdrawn & I nominate you for this year's Noble piece prize!( Pls somebody do not post it is Nobel & peace!!)
Udaya,
you are free to your opinion and i am free to express mine but do horses sing:-)
what with all the trouble with our server I got left out of all the Rani Padmini sparring. The onlY Rani padmini that I know of ( and Saravanan & OISG perhaps) kicked the bucket under tragic circumstances the wanton victim of some MCP! But that is neither here nor there.
