After the high profile debut Karthik Raja had,has he really fulfilled the expectations from him?I feel that he has been brilliant in Ullasam and the Hindi movie Grahan, but not really earth-shattering as Rahman was in 92-93.What is his current status in TFM ? And what do our DF members think about his future ??

Hello guys,
Who said that AR is a "genius".I'm already read that intrerview in KR homepage. You can't cheat me.KR said that,AR is a good musician but not a good music director.KR also said,he would get into controvercy when ask about AR.

KR is good in melodies like Nadiyodu in Alexender, Konjum Majal pookal in Ullasam etc. In other varieties he needs lot of improvement.
Regarding Mr Balan comments about IR, Its imposible for any one to take the position IR took in the last 25 years of TF music.

KR i personallyeel is very good , especially in ullasam and in mannicam. but i feel AR is becoming more sterio type. But nowonder he has elated the tamil music world and placed it in a pedestal. And i think to compare to people u need to place them on eqi-footing , one person is an upcoming star and the other well established , come on man we have give some time for KR , i was told that he's just 19yrs.

Hi,
There is not deniyal KR composes very good techical scores. His beats are very complex..
Rakkama in Manikkam.
Saravanabava guha aazaga...is also a complex beat..
But he fails to concentrate on his sound balancing & mixing...I feel he lacks technical knowledge like AR...his mixdown are pretty poor when compared to AR..
For example the thilang violin piece in Kadala Kadala ..is never heard in most of the music system..
The harmony pieces AR scores is very much better than KR offlate it is better than Raja..
Has vijay say KR needs more maturity to match Raja - though he tries his best.
Also he has to concentrate on the fact that he should not sound like his father..people will then brand the songs to old IRs scores.

Ezhil: Karthik is 23 years of age....Have you heard Grahan? He won Best 'Hindi film' newcomer for that. It has re-cycled stuff from his Tamil films and a couple of great new tunes....ARR was around this age when he started giving hits, only he didn't have the Big family name to back him up.
I believe ARR said in an old interview of his that YSR has the makings of a genius, but he didn't mention Karthik. I wonder how he made his judgement. Karthik in another interview said that they're all good friends, so maybe ARR saw something in YSR. YSR has produced a few class songs like Oyvedu from Velai, Kadhal Kadhal from Aravindan....I'm yet to see a good, full album from him, KR has done this with Ullasam and Grahan.
Karthik got slated for the comment that ARR can't make a beautiful melody from a simple tune and the Music director comment. I felt that this was a bit 'rude' from a new-comer, however big Daddy dear is.

HI Balan,
I agree using the keyboard to compose it little tough, But there is one more thing which is much harder, writing scores for natural instruments. Raja is Raja in that art..
Most of his scores are for natural instruments,
Setting a Guitar whamps and a bass chords is very easy on the keyboards...
But when you compose it for two different instruments is not easy....
I agree Rahaman is great , but Raja has also done many things for TFM. No one can deny this fact.
Every song raja does has a new music experiment incorporated in it...
But AR's is more canned music.
Buys samples from Roland, Korg, Akai etc and uses them .
But if you see Raja's drum tracks they cannot be found in any of the beat samples around the world. He composes those tracks..
Eg: Motta madai Motta modi..
Valai osai
Nila Adhu....
Ar uses already available tracks..I agree this is hard ..but the what Raja does is much harder.
eg: Muqabla : drum samples..from Akai samplers
I have the CD samples at at home...you can also buy it from any musical shop. which deals in samplers and drum loops.
You cannot just rule Raja is not at all good, just for the reason AR gave somthing new..
....

Stop.... Ingaiyum Raja Vs ARR saNdaiya???
Srikanth,
Super N-eththii aadi.
Others,
Don't compare KR vs YSR / Raja(s) vs ARR.
KR konjam thannai mathikaNNum. Both KR & YSR are very very young. They will rule TFM very soon. They need to compose based on the song sequence. But this is depend upon the director and the Lyrics Wirter too.
The both are in a small circle. They have to come out that. They have use singers totally out side from their home. They should not experiment like what they did with Prabhu Deva, Ajeeth in Ullasam.
First they need to give a break and estabish their Names in TFM industry. They have to perform music together. They both should change the ARR & IR trend. They need to introduce their own trend.

Has anybody listened to the brilliant Reethigowla song "Unakkenna Raasa" by P.Suseela from the movie "Maanikkam" ? This is one of Karthik's brilliant composition. The first interlude has intricate rhythm sections.

Hi,
Yesterday in the SUN T.V they showed an interview with KR.
KR was pretty straight forward in his interview.
Some excerpts
o Started playing keyboard for IR when he was 12.
o Was asked by IR to Compose his first song Panidiyanin Rajiyathil
o Impressed Rajinikath uncle(as he says) and all other music buffs with his orchestarisation for uzhaipalli(Raja was too buys with his symphony at that time).
o Seems to be pretty excited when he was talking about Ullasam and Grahan.
o It seems he doesn't know hindi and composed Kehatehan Gisko tune for the lyrics which has become a bit hit in Hindi.
o I seems that all the directors have given him max. freedom incl. Kamalhassan.
o He says that he didn't have much of scope for music in the movie KK.
o After seeing some movies with other MD he feels that he could have done his best in his style.
He also defended that he was not commenting on the other MD or not any ego. This guy is just desperate for good situational songs.
o His fav. while composing was Muthe Muthamma and after composition is Intha siripinai and athi adi athi from NINI.
o He says that in KK in lot of places his background score channel has been turned off.

Adding to the other MD stuff he pointed out Kadal Kottai as example.

Sridhar: Really, is it(Unnakenna Rasa) in Reethigowla? I didn't notice this element at all. Please can you show some notation in evidence, I'll try and get hold of the song in the weekend....Agreed, it's an excellent song....

Buddy: This is very true, while watching the awful Kadhala Kadhala movie, we noticed the lack of BGM, where most bits, as KR said were turned off. It gave a very bad impression of KR's BGM abilities, however, he's done a good job in other movies. Thanks for pointing this out.

hi geetha,
i feel that KR is much more versatile than ARR , simply because he has inherited his father's imagination and that instantaneous delivery which depicts our culture. ive heard the songs of Grahan and its good, the northies are deprived of good music, i.e. they r so engrossed in the western culture that they feel that anything that has to be (heard ,seen felt,...)should have a western tinch , how sad, but fortunately we are'nt like that, we need some soothing stuff and not that bang bang kinda thing which will blast our drums out. But, all said and done IR is GREAT and none to beat him from the the present crop.

Sridhar: Thanks a lot, it's really appreciated. It's jsut that my re-collection of the song doesn't point to Reethigowla, as the paryogams are not to obvious....

Geetha: You are probably right. I judged the song just by listening. The song itself does not sound like reethigowla. But the first interlude does sound so. It is possible that Karthik might have used more than one ragam in the song.
- From: Geetha (@ gatekeeper.oracle.co.uk)
on: Fri Jun 26 07:32:55 EDT 1998
Sridhar: I'll take another listen in the song this wwekend, if I can. It's quite possible that he's mixed Ragas, as most MD's do, bearing in mind that Karthik is not as interested in Carnatic music as IR, according to interviews in his web page, so he may not be trying to bring out a particular ragam.
Quote:
"Dad is the classicist, the perfectionist. He believes in proper scales, does not like to deviate from the rules. He does compose in a wide variety of idioms, but always taking care to stick within the traditions of music. As for me, I love Hindustani, Carnatic, Western classical, even pop and heavy metal which my father disdains. And I don't like to stay within the limits of the rule book when composing,"
