Hi,
I don't know if this has been discussed earlier. Pardon me if it has been :)
What exactly is kAvadi Chindu? Is it a folk/devotional idiom, or a musical form (like jAvaLI, varNam, ThillAna etc.) or is it a raga? If not, which raga does it usually come close to? Is it kApi? I can identify them as kAvadi Chindu, but on what basis I don't know. It's the raga I guess.
Is it usually performed when a devotee dances with the kAvadi as an offering to Lord Muruga? How and when did it become part of Carnatic music concerts and even dance performances? I think there are some old movies which had KAvadi Chindu performed by TMS, TR Mahalingam & KittappA...
Raga. Sundar & others, perhaps you can list some of the songs in TFM in KAvadi chindu and throw some light on it. Thanks in advance.

Peter Pan,
Kavadi chindu is not a raga...it is a kind of a composition(which has a strong folk base)...Bharathiar and Annamalai reddiar have composed a lot of Kavadi chindu...it is believed that the tune's sandham suits well for kavadi aattam...u can notice that most kavadi chindus are composed in praise of lord muruga(exceptions like "Thedi unnai charan adainthen desa muthu maari","senthamiz naadennum pothinile".by bharathiar do exists)....
I remember a ols film song which goes like
"thottathile thennai iraNdu
muthith thiraNdu
pakkam urNdu...." is a kavadi chindu(i dont know whether this is the pallavi and which film it came in)....I have heard Kavadi Chindus in ragas like Aananda bairavi,Senjurutti,Chakravaham,Sindu Bairavi...
EXPERTS WILL CORRECT THE MISTAKES IN MY POST AND ADD A FEW MORE POINTS

A little more about the usage/history of Kaavadi Sindhu (please allow me to digress):
I heard from my grandma that Kaavadi sindhu songs are more popularised by the paadhai yaatrai group from chettinadu area and madurai area (esp. by the former). I am a gnaana soonyam in identifying raagas or class of songs. im just a layman listener thats all. though i have heard such songs i didn't know that they are kaavadi sindhu songs, thats why i quote my grandma.
These yaatrai people walk (bare foot) all the way from kaaraikudi, devakottai, madurai and their nearby places to pazhani (about 150kms) during the month of Jan (esp. in thai month for thai poosam). One should experience, in person, the divinity, brotherhood, friendship and all sorts of human good qualities exhibited throughout in that yaatrai. A very rich business man/woman and an ordinary daily wages man/woman walk together, help together, sleep on roadside. One has to see the hospitality of the wayside village people (pure, geniune, no monetary motive except small vendors). The yaatrai will be around 4 days. This will be, in the beggining, started in groups and later on many groups will join along the way. That time elderly people in the group would sing songs in the praise of lord murugan. Many songs will be in kaavadi sindhu. Some people even carry kaavadi (like pazha(fruit) kaavadi, panneer kaavadi etc) with them all the way (a kind of justice to these songs). This yaatrai has been a long tradition for hundereds of years. I inclined to think that the thai poosam festival of Singapore and Malaysia has its parent in this festival. It was primarily carried out by people of chettinad and madurai. But nowadays lot of other area people also carry this out.

Yesterday's episode of Rudra Veenai...
Baba is passing by a village where there is a
peN pArkkum padalam going on. The prospective
mother-in-law asks the girl to do all kinds of
things (like carrying a pot of water on her hip,
whether water flows under when it is held in the
palm of the hands etc). She is dissatisfied with
the girl and starts walking away saying that the girl
is not good enough for her son. Baba watches this
and starts playing Kalyana Dahini on his
(rudra) veena. This causes a reaction in the bride-groom.
He calls his mother with a smile, asks her to open
her hand palm, pours water in it and shows how
Ottai her hand itself is. There are smiles
everywhere now and the marriage gets fixed.
Kalyana Dahini (swaras: Kalyani without Pa; It is mentioned as
Kalyana Dayini in Ragapravaham book)
indha rAgaththai isaikkak kEttAl manadhil perunthanmaiyai
ERpaduththi siRu kutram kuRaigaLai mannikkum iyalbai ERpaduththum.
naRkAriya kAlangkaLil isaikka ugandha rAgam.

LADIES AND LADAAS(OOPS...GENTLEMEN).
I had a dream yesterday in which most of the great legends(Yendhero Mahanubhavulu) of World Music appeared and Complimented the ROS as the best forum in this website.
But they complained about the Digression in ROS forum since the last few days. These stalwarts included the Trinity of Carnatic music, great Hindustani Maestros , Western Music legends(Mozart, Beethoven, Bach etc.) and other Musicians.
( Pls do not misunderstand the order of musicians mentioned here , i am just putting them randomly, may have missed out many others too;)
They gave some COMMANDMENTS to me, out of which I remember mainly FIVE.
those 5 are:
1 we should stop this "unwanted" Digression now and resume our informative discussions on the ROS.
2 A Song discussed here can be from Film or Classical, Old or New.
3 Discussing about new songs(of course songs which have a raaga as the main base) is allowed.
4 No one in the forum should be targeted specifically, and that too, in a harsh tone.(Applies to the one who provokes it too)
5 In the eyes of different people, different musicians may be good. So we can discuss about any song by any musician or MD, and not be biased about some particular MDs. Of course we have the right to express our opinions freely without hurting others.
these are some of the Salient points of the dream i had yesterday. Hope we all continue the healthy atmosphere which was there before, as also to please these Great legends:-).
Anthariki Vandanamu:-)
cheers

Ram,
Thanks for the info.
Looks like kAvad Chindu is a musical form. I'd like to know the unique characteristics of this form that gives it its identity. If it can be composed in many ragas, then is it the structure? Or the rhythmic pattern?
There's a bit song by Manorama in ThillAna mOhanAmbAL. "pAndiyan Nanirukka..." Is that kAvadi Chindu style?
Kupps,
Very interesting information indeed. I am sure such 'related' digressions are most welcome by fellow visitors of this thread.

Peter Pan - thanks for bringing up this topic. Kupps and Ram - excellent information. Nice to read something different for a change!!!!!!
Kavadi Chindus being pure folk melodies with a folky bounce have always been a welcome inclusion to an otherwise "preset/formatted" concert style. The ever popular "nandhavanathil Or aandi" is my all time favorite :-) A few other ragas in which KC's have been composed include Senjurutti, Maanji, punnagavaraLI etc - ragas that suit folk tunes! Does anybody know of any KC in AndhoLika? AndhoLika is supposedly a raga derived from folk music.... would be interesting to see if there are any KC's in this raga. As Peter Pan suggested, it would be nice to see a list of KC's composed in TFM.
Is it Kavadi Sindhu or Kavadi Chindu?

In Senjurutti, these were the kavadi chindus I found when (what seems eons ago) we [royal "we"? :)} were discussing about Jhinjhoti/Senjurutti stuff:
Compositions of Uthukkadu Venkata "Kavi" Subbaiyer (c.1700-c.1765):

The above compositions being for Krishna seem to suggest that KCs were extended to other deities beyond Murugan. Here is another random note I found:
ANNAMALAI REDDIAR - COMPOSER...............(1865 - 1890 or 1891)
'Kavadi Chindu' is one of the forms of light compositions in Tamil which are highly popular for their simplicity, emotional content and appeal. In praise of Lord Muruga of Kazhugumalai in Tirunelvelli, Annamalai Reddiar had composed kavadi chindus. Rich in poetic excellence and charming melody, his songs include pieces like 'Murugan Tirumal Marugan Perumai' (Atana). Has composed Thalapuranam, etc. Annamalai Reddiar was born at Chennimalai in Tirunelvelli District. A charming person, he is stated to have led a reckless life and died in his twenty-sixth year. The Lord of Kazhugumalai has been praised by Muthuswami Dikshitar also in his 'Subramanyena Rakshitoham' (Suddha Danyasi) and Arunagirinathar in Tiruppugazh.

IR:
Do you remember the composer of nandavanathil or aandi? I forgot.
"Villinaiyotha puruvam" is sometimes sung as kavadi sindhu. I believe it is Kavadi Sindhu, not chindu. Sindhu is a type of song. Though you gotta pronounce it is as kAvadicchindu when you make it a single word - tamil grammar nuances :)
Sundar Atre:
Kannan varuginra neram looks pretty much like a kavadi sindhu, its typically sung in raga mAnji. I feel mAnji is close to anandha bhairavi.
