Some of the songs Jaya chandran sang for IR, are absolute beauties, be it the breezy duet "Poonthendrale" along with Vani Jayaram or the "Thaalatuthe Vaanam" with SJ. He sang around 70 songs for IR, out of which around 80% are proclaimed hits.
Lets discuss about the songs, the films and why IR choose JC to sing only few songs , even though some of the songs were huge hits.

Osho,
'unnai kaanumneram onru" song from unnai naan sandithen is by JC and VJ, not by KJJ if I am not wrong, also, Devan thanda veenai is by SPB and SJ
Mudivilla aarambham: The other song is MV's "Thennakeetrum thenral kaatrum" , the song by SJ u mentioned " vaan Meedhile" is from "Raagangal Maaruvadhillai" I think,
Thops- JC with IR in 90's, "Chemmeenae chemminae" a great song can some body name the movie... I am blocking out...
Eden' mentioned about " urudhi Mozhi" song another beauty again from 90's
Vijay, yes that will be cool to have a thread on Uma Ramanan, another singer whose songs somehow I have a fear I might have missed someof the rare gems. U are absolutely right, if IR had some specific reasons or if he had some special liking towards her voice she got some of most memorable songs, ( andha "aananda raagam " oru song podhum, for me to cherish for 100 years, if I am fortunate have a life expectancy like a chinese or japanese to live so long)

JC has been a singer par excellance, but unforutunately under appreciated.
One constant element in his singing is the involvement, he had put in each of the song, whether it is pronounciation or bringing the necessary emotional content. There are probably very very few songs, where he sang off key or sounded contrived ( which is true for lot of KYJ songs). His hit song ratio is very high.
The following songs should be in top 10 songs of non-IR.
1. Adi Velli thedi unnai ( Mundru moodichu)
2. Vasantha kala nadigale ( Mundru Moodichu)
3. Unnodu enna ennavo ragashiyam ( Thoondil Meen)
4. Vasandha kalangal issandhiu paadungal ( Rail payangalil)
Thanks

Prabhu das,
Devan thanda veenai is indeed by JC and SJ. There are two versions i believe, one sung by JC and another one by SPB. I am yet to hear the SPB version. Can any one throw some light on this.
As far as "Unnai kaanum" , i think its KJY but not sure though.
Also thanks for correcting me on the "Vaan meethile " film.
Vijay,
true. Uma Ramanan deserves special mention. Apart from the "Ananda Raagam" , another song that i absolutely adore her is "Sevanthi Pookalil". The way she sings the line "Koovina Poonguil,
Koovina kozhi...." is out of the world. A song so great.

As lot of people , talk about JC's non IR songs, some of the other songs i like and top my list is "Kavithai Arangerum Neram" by another genius MSV.
Follow it up with songs from the same film. Great songs they are.

Looks like `hit' rate of IR-JC combo is >90%:-)

It also looks like JC hit rate (with any MD) may be >90% (though the total quantity itself may not be huge)...very successful singer indeed...

Surya & Sarvanan,
>>ponnenna poovenna kaNNe<< sounded more like PS or Jency song rather than PJ song, pls clarify, or perhaps there was a female version of it as well as P.Jeyachandran's version!

isn't that pon enna poo enna kaNNe (maNipayal, MD: MSV) first song of JC?
JC did have good songs, in other MDs as well, atleast 3 CDs worth :)
1. malarO nilavO malai magaLO (raaga bandhangaL, LV)
2. muthu rathamO mullai saramO
3. thiru murugan arukinilE vaLLi kurathi
4. maasi maadham muhoortha nEram
5. One song from Kashmir kaadhali (GK.Venkatesh, MD), can't recall now :)

Raghu:
ponnenna poovenna kaNNe
un kaNNadi uLLathin munne
oru kalyaana peNNaaga unnai
puvi kaaNaamal pOgathu peNNe
is indeed a PJ song. I havent heard the female version, if at all there is one.

muthu rathamo mullai charamO is from ponnagaram - Sarathbabu, Shoba. As always, Saravanan can give us more details!

Surya, Ponnagaram (1980/ True Films). Story, dialougues and direction by K.S.Madhangan. Saratbabu & Shobha. Music by S-G.
muthu rathamO mullai charamO (JC/VJ) is a dreamy duet, with an interesting arrangement of the charanam lines- almost akin to the overlapping arrangements of the charanams of IR's poo malayE.
The lyrics for this song were by an obscure lyricist called Sultan.

'pon enna poo enna kanne' is from Alaigal(1973/ Chitralaya). Music: MSV.This was probably his second song in Tamil.
His first song in Tamil was 'thangachimizh pol idhazho' from Manippayal (also 1973/ Selvi Enterprises). Music: MSV
Ragabandhangal's MD was Kunnakkudi Vaithyanathan.

1. Poova Eduthu Oru maalai – Amman Koil Kizhakale – 1986
Another melodious duet by JC and SJ. This movie starred vijay kanth and raadha had some terrific songs. Some of the songs are the SPB solo’s “Kada veethi” or the “Chinna mani kuyile”.
A nice duet.
2. Onna Renda - Thazhuvaatha Kaigal – 1986
Again a vijaykanth starrer, had ambika acting as his beloved wife. A story about a middle class family, where the protagonists only aim seemed to be improving the population of india. Their problems , the turmoil they undergo forms the rest of the story. As usual IR’s music was a winner. A good duet again by JC and SJ.
3. Vizhiye Vizhakkondru – Thazhuvaatha Kaigal – 1986
Mind boggling prelude. The way this song starts is just a indication of how IR conceives the song, how meticulously he executes it. Listen to it, brilliant.
As usual JC and SJ at their best, an amazing melodious song. This same movie had another song sung by JC and SJ “Thottu paaru”.
4. Suthanthirathai – Rettai Vaal Kuruvi – 1987
IR made JC to sing in a different pattern than the one JC used to sing for him. A fun song. The “Raja Raja Chozhan” from the same movie is the pick of the album. Nevertheless a good song.
5. Enathu Vizhi – Solla thudikkuthu Manasu – 1988
Ah! Another brilliant prelude, and absolute beauty of a song. Listen to the way SJ sings the song. A classy duet again.
6. Poo mudichu Pottu Vaitha – En purushan thaan enakku mattum thaan - 1988
JC joins with Sunandha again for this enchanting duet. This vijay kanth starrer, had rekha and suhasini as his co-stars. This song has some great flute play and great singing.

7. Pullai Kuda Paada vaitha – En Purushan thaan enakku mattum thaan – 1988
Another JC and IR combination hit song. Excellent song. If anyone remembers the plot please divulge.
8. En Manasa Parigoduthu - Ullam Kavarntha Kalvan – 1988
JC starts the song alone singing the pallavi. Listen to his voice, so melodious. Another underrated gem of a song, listen how IR keeps the momentum through out the entire song. The rhythm pattern subtly changing in the charanam is one thing to note.
9. Kaathal Thiruda – PickPocket – 1989
A good song sung by JC and Chithra.
10. Athi Kaalai Nilave – Urudhi Mozhi – 1990
SJ and JC again sang this beautiful duet. IR’s choice for JC seems to be based on the actor post 1985, i guess. If the movie starred vijaykanth / or prabhu , he would invariably give some numbers to him.
11. Thaimaasam – Thambikku Oru Paatu – 1991
Some of the post 1990 IR gems went unnoticed. This one falls in to that category. Sung by JC and swarnalatha. An absolute gem of a song.
12. Valli Valli – Deiva Vaaku – 1992
This song had two versions, one sung by IR himself and the other by JC. The one used in the movie and one, immensely famous was by IR.
13. Semmeney Semmeney – Sevvanthi – 1994
His last association with IR in tfm. This duet again with sunandha also falls into the unnoticed gem category. Good song.

Osho, great listing, again!
One minor correction: The MD for En Purushanthaan Enakku Mattumthaan was GA.
There was a film Ponvilangu-1993. (Stg. Rahman, Ranjit & Sivaranjini). MD:IR.
JC sang 2 songs in the film: Oru kolakili ( a JC/Sunanda duet). There was a JC solo also in the same film-- the opening lines elude me now :(
JC sang the jathis in 'Kavithai Kelungal'- that superb VJ song from Punnagai Mannan.
Some more JC songs for IR that I recall:
1.Aaha iruttu neram- Ilaiyarajavin Rasigai
2.Kanna vaa- Malargal Nanaigindrana
(both JC-SJ duets from unreleased films)
