Some of the songs Jaya chandran sang for IR, are absolute beauties, be it the breezy duet "Poonthendrale" along with Vani Jayaram or the "Thaalatuthe Vaanam" with SJ. He sang around 70 songs for IR, out of which around 80% are proclaimed hits.
Lets discuss about the songs, the films and why IR choose JC to sing only few songs , even though some of the songs were huge hits.

This being a thread to list Jayachandran's songs and the emphasis being on the tune and his rendition, I would place "oru vaanavil pole" in the top 10 in place of thavikudhu or Poonthendrale. Rest of Gyan's choices are good.
Poovile medai naan podava and Indraikku yen indha aanadhaname deserve mention too.
For a totally uncharacteristic fun-filled rendition, listen to "naadirukkum nilamyile" from Ullam kavarndha kaLvan where Jayachandran imitates bhagavathars and does a few pranks.

JC's (and KJY's) voice and rendition were suited for more of polished urban type of songs. Even "Raasaathi unney..", though filmed in a rural setting, falls in this catagory.
Folk/rustic tunes or fast numbers were the forte of SPB (Eg. Songs in Rosaappoo ravikkaikari, Kalyanaraman, Pathinasru vayathiniley etc.).
This is the reason why JC didn't get so many songs in the seventies/eighties, a period when the fast/folk/rustic tunes were ruling roost. It doesn't reflect on the ability of JC.

VV, what about "Chithirai Sevvaanam" from KVG or the "Odhakkaathu" from gramathu Athiyayum. I certainly believe them to be a wonderfull rendition with a rustic rural feeling.
Saravanan,
Some of the listings in the 1979, i've not hear of. The rishi moolam song is nothing sort of brilliance. Melancholic, but as you rightly said "appealing". Can you please divulge more about the movies please for people like me, who have only watched movies more of the 1980's(after 1985) rather than of the 70's.
Vijay,
I unfortunately left out the "Oru Vaanavil Pole" and "Manjal Nilavukku" coz, i had already posted it in the yahoo club forum, and accidently missed it when i pasted it here. Thanks for reminding it. Oru vaanavil pole seems to top the list.
Thops, porumai. IR and JC ella songayum oru kai parthiduvom :))

IR and JC - Retrospection 2nd Part (1982- 1986)
1. Poonthendral Katre Vaa - Manjal Nila - 1982
----------------------------------------------------
A wonderful duet by P. Susheela and Jayachandran. I don’t have a clue as how this song eluded Guitar
Prassanna’s list. The God of guitar in Indian Film Music weaves his magic again. Sensuous singing by both the lead vocals makes this song a Gem.(I'm mentioning this as Gem, coz i want it in project GEM :) )
Percussion starts the song, soon followed by a guitar and then the trombone and a flute joins together. The interludes will blow you off, those guitar interlude will leave you speechless, take my word. Note the guitar accompanying through out the entire song.
2. Kaalithaasan - Soorakkottai Singakkutti - 1983
---------------------------------------------------
Again, PS and jC join together in this melodious duet. Another classy duet from IR. JC and PS as usual are immaculate in their delivery.
3. Devan Thantha Veenai - Unnai Naan Santhithen - 1984
-------------------------------------------------------
This film had some great numbers, but this one takes the cake. The way JC sings the line
"Vannangal Naan ennum ennangal, Engiruntho engu vanthen,
Isaiyinile Ennai Maranthen, Iraivan sabaiyil Kalaignan Naan"
Make me feel that JC perhaps made a tribute to his friend and composer par excellence. A terrific song by any account, "Unnai Naan Santhithen" had some other excellent songs,"Hey! I love you" by KJY & VJ, "Unnai Kaanum Neram" by KJY & VJ and another brilliant song "Thaalatu Maari ponathe" both IR and Janaki version. Wee! thats a
great album.
4. Paadi Vaa thendrale - Mudivilla Arambam - 1984
---------------------------------------------------
Another elusive album to get, with nothing less than two great great song. This movie, had “Paadivaa thendrale” sung brilliantly by JC along with., who else but the guitar : ), and another brilliant solo by Janaki in the form of "Vaan meedhile".
"Poovae chendanathu , oru bothai undanathu
selai konda solai ondru vaasal vanthal ennavathu"
Listen how JC sings this lines with complete dedication and the final ending with "la la" adds this song one of the best JC had sung so far.
5. Indraikku Yaen Entha - Vaithegi Kaathirunthaal -1984
-------------------------------------------------------
R. Sundarajan’s block buster for IR and JC combination. Vijay kanth as the widower performed a stunner. A film, which took TN by storm, had memorable songs. JC again with VJ, providing a real masterpiece with this semi classical number.
Beginning of an association of IR, JC and Vijaykanth begins for the pleasure of all music lovers.
Note : Another association also began, Koundamani and senthil with the "Petramox" was hillarious. Senthil asking koundamani "Ennannee..odachitenga" was nothing sort of brilliance..

8. Oonjal - Komberi Mookkan - 1984
-------------------------------------------
A hit for thyagarajan, another JC and IR hit. A melodious duet again by JC and JC.
9. Kaadhal Mayakkam - Pudhumai Penn - 1984
---------------------------------------------------
Sunandha joins together with JC for this semi classical , brilliant song. Brilliant veena
play is one thing to notice. Sunandha’s voice is sweet.
This revathy and Paandian film of Bharathi Raaja had another good song by MV, "Oru thendral Puyalagi...".
10. Mayanginen Solla Thayanginen - Naane Raaja Naane Manthiri - 1985
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ah! What a melodious duet by JC and PS. IR subtly weaves a tinge of melancholy through out the song.
11. Poovilae Madai - Pagal Nilavu - 1985.
----------------------------------------------
Mani rathnams movie with Sathyaraj (wasnt he terrific in the movie), murali , revathy and sarath babu in the role had again some memorable songs. Be it the IR and Janaki song "Poo Maalayai" or this JC and PS song. A lullaby again, where the brother sings to wipe out the pains of his sister. Listen how the lead singers deliver the emotions. A short, but again a great song.
12. Raaja Magal - Pillai Nila - 1985
------------------------------------------------
This has to be my pick of the solo songs. Right up there in the very best in terms of orchestration,
singing and good lyrics. The guitar once again playing a part in elevating the song with janaki, brilliantly chipping in again with JC on the interludes.
13. Alagaga Sirithathu - December Pookal - 1986
------------------------------------------------
Another mohan starrer had a brilliant song in the form of “Azhagaga sirithathu”. JC’s attempt to voice modulation with Janaki singing "la la" makes this one hell of a breezy romantic duet. The master of orchestration, in full flow makes the interludes and the charanams memorable.
A good pointer, to how lead vocals can make a song memorable.
14. Kodiyilae - Kadalora Kavithaigal - 1986
------------------------------------------------
Another binder from the BR-IR combination, has this run away hit sung eloquently by JC and SJ.
15. Naan Kaathalil - Mandhira Punnagai - 1986.
--------------------------------------------------
With IR holding the fort in tfm, JC sang another beauty of a song. Another tough song for a singer, but JC breezes through with elan. Another great solo. People who have seen this movie, please explain the cast , crew etc and how the song was picturised.

There is a beauty from the film 'uRudhi mozhi' which is something like 'adhi kAlaikkathirE, alangArachchudarE, pudhu rAgam nee pAda vA'...with SJ. Very soothing and melodious with sweet tabala accompaniment...

Osho, after you are done with this, I suggest you open another thread for IR-Uma Ramanan, another singer who most of the time got good tunes from IR for some inexplicable reason, right thru to the 90s.
