I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

I saw everyone discussing "Yaaradhu sollamal nenjalli povadhu" song by VJ in Nenjamaellam eeyae. There is another excellent VJ solo in that movie. "Naalai mudhal unakkaagavae naan paduvaen..en uyir kananae..."

I have been thinking about the foll. song-Devathai puriyum ragangal
yendan parvaigale..
its a solo by VJ -but don't seem to remember the name of the film.
KS-Thanks for the info.
Also does anyone know the name of the film-Thirumurgan aruginile valli kurathi
If I remember VJ also sang in the film -Bhadrakali,
Aadu puli attam. Due to this thread I seem to remember these but don't seem to remember the name of the songs.

There's no VJ song in Bhadrakali. There is a couple of songs in Thavam. And a nice song in "My Dear Kuttichaathaan" and a duet with PS in a Lakshmi-Sivachandran starrer with also Jayashree in the cast.

Devathai puriyum Thavangal...nice song - but I am not too sure abut the film.
Thirumurugan is from Mayor Meenatchi.
I don't think VJ sang for Bhadrakali (could be wrong).
She had a solo in Tiripurasundari... Yen kangal endrum un meedhu...(Was that by VJ?)
She had another song called "Vatsala yogum porundhadhu...." (Sulakshana/Prasanna film) don't know the name though.
General question: Why was it that VJ was (mostly) overlooked by IR during his peak? Was it Image? (VJ did and does have a more "serious" image, although she is just as versatile as SJ)or was it something else? He did give her some of his most insipired compositions Enullil, Kavithai, Naane Naana, En Kalyana, Unnai Kaanum Bothu Nenjam, Ore Naal Unnai Naan...and yet, her songs for IR a few and far between. Does anyone have any interesting theories why this was/is so?

Remember this song?
"Kannaadi Amma Un Idhayam" - VJ & PS from Paadha Poojai. A very nice & fast song.

IR was very very busy in the 80's (especially since 83/84 during Naan Paadum Paadal period) that I think (from what I heard) he rarely chose the singers! It was his assistants who called the singers and recorded the songs and I think they mostly (unless there was Raja's intervention) ended up calling SPB and SJ - who were the most popular ones at that time!
I can recall PS remark very casually (the one time that I met her) "..indha pasanga ellam phone panna sonna panradhe illappa!" - she was referring to the boys and assistants, ofcourse!

I also remembered the song from Thisai mariya paravigal-The song-ullam urugatha unthan oonum urugatha-actually this is a devotional song sung very beautifully by VJ.

VJ excels in "devotionals" (just as she does in others (or) more classical numbers). Varvaan Vadivelan, Gnana Kuzhandai, Melmaruvathoor Mariyamma, Melnaatu Marumagal...had some good bhakti songs. Devotionals tend to challenge her Carnatic training more than some other compositions.
Although this is not a devotional, this song from Manmadha Leelai is one of my all time VJ favorites:
Naadhamenum Kovilile
Gnana Vilaketri Vaithaen
Yetri Vaitha Vilakinile
Yennaivida Nee Kidaithai...
Amazing composition, inspired lyrics, tour-de-force singing!

Do u remember the movie "Kanji Kamatchi". There is a VJ solo for a small boy. She sings Uyir Mei Ezuthukal starting from Ka. It is tremendous.

GR - how many of today's youth/generation really know their Uyir Mei Ezuthu? Tamil music can do a great service to people - if only it can be pulled back from all this techno-frenzy and thapputhalangal!!

What is thapputhalangal??
Naadhamenum kovilile is a poignant and melodious song. I listen to it again and again.
Also what is "uyir mei ezuthu"???
Balaji:
You will find elluil engo on dhool.com. I am surprised u did not find it. Is it Raag Madhuvanti?? (I just heard a classical concert by a singer in PUne - twas in raag Madhuvanti and it somehow reminded me of this song.

kik, i am searching for that song for long time. I tried in audio shops also. What is the size of the file? Can anyone help uploading that "Uyirmei Ezuthu" song? Kik if u can get that song, I'll be very happy. VJ clearly distinguishes all letters with proper pronounciation.
Mani, that My dear Kuttichathaan song is my all time favorite.
Chellak kuzandthaihale
Thullum vasandthangkale
aadungkalean paadungkalean
oru thozan thunnaiku vandthaan
I think I was at 5th or 6th. I was studying at Tuticorin that time. Theatre Raj released that movie. They had increased the ticket price to Rs.50 (that time). But when we went there the picture hall was sealed by government. After reopening I saw the movie twice or thrice. Mainly for that song. I was non-vegiee that time. They show a chicken piece in 3D. Even now I laugh when I remember that song.

An article about VJ in the singers section says that IR did not use VJ so often, on account of the fact (or rumour) that she claimed that IR was not as good as MSV.
However this is difficult to believe, considering that IR is supposed to be an extremely humble, generous person (I have heard so). In fact IR is supposed to have had great respect for MSV,AFAIK.

AVR - Uyir/Mei Ezuthu ( in a literal translation ) means Life/Body Letters of a Language (alphabet). In the english equivalent would be vowels and consonants.
I used Thapputhalangal - to say that all kinds of mockery passes off as music in today's Tamil/Hindi films. Thapputhalangal means - wrong rhythms (Thappu - Wrong/Flawed Thala-ngal - Rhythm(s)) It can also connote a certain carelessness/disrespect for musical purity. BTW the same name was a good film by K Balachander and had a good VJ solo (Vijayabhaskar): Azhagana Ilamangai Katil Koduthaal..

How could VJ say IR was not upto the Mark - when according to Karthi's theory (see above) he was seldom there for the recording of his own compositions! Interestingly enough, Gangai Amaran gave VJ many tunes in the films he composed music for. Maybe, he attended all his recordings and called the singers himself...

There was a really good song by VJ in Kelviyum Naane Badhilum Naane (Srividya/ Aruna ) The music I think was either by MSV or S-G. Does anyone recall the song I am thinking of?
Also two interesting songs in another movie (I forget the name) but it had Karthik and Jalaja in it. Music was by S-G.
Has anyone here mentioned the VJ/SPB duet: Bharthi Kannamma Neeyadi Chinnamma from Ninaithale Innikkum? It is a lovely song and was very popular (with serious competition from the other song "Ore Naal" by the same duo.)
