I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Maasi Masa Kadaisiyila (Pallandu Vazhga), Konda Konallo (Swatikiranam) and Aa miru Ee Meru (Neela) - All of the above have a non-stop folksy rhythm/flavour all through that keeps the singer good pace. The first two are by KVM and the last one by Vijaybhaskar. Listen to all 3 (one after the other, in that order) and you get a sense of how consistent VJ's voice is over the years. It's a rewarding exercise (karumbu thinga kooliya?)Is the first song available on the net? I know the latter 2 are.

Naaz:
I have a tape of Sur sangam. There are only two songs by Lata. Out of which i love the lata-suresh wadkar duet "maika piya bulavE".Most of the songs are by KK with Rajan Sajan Mishra. There is one duet between Anuradha and the mishra brothers too, I think.
In the north, classical scores are treated so poorly ever since the 80s. Maybe thats the reason it flopped!!!! However, my opinion on Sur Sangam and Shankarabharanam is - the MUSIC WAS EXCELLENT, but the movies are maudlin,icky-sticky sentimental and goody-goody,excessively holy, where western music has been shown in poor light!! (this is all IMVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVHO, no flames :-))) )
Naaz, I AM looking forward to your mail. Never mind those silly fights, but I respect you.
Has VJ sung for Jaidev apart from the Parinay song and the Solwa Saavan song(s)??? Also has KK sung for Jaidev????
Also what was the Aarohi song-program. Tell me more about it!!
Balaji:
that swarnakamalam song is A DELIGHT. The tune is unique and VJ+SPB are at their best again. All those songs are beautiful. The only exception is a very vulgar and poor SJ solo.
How I wish, how I wish such classical scores existed in Hindi movies in the 80s apart from the selected few!! How I wish!!

AVR,
Yes, both the films had thoughtful music (not "factory" music). I have only heard the KK song with the Misra Brothers. Lata and Suresh Wadkar were good together (even the song from Prem Rog is a gem).
What's happened to film music as of the 90s is that the MDs don't adequately challenge the singers - and the focus is more on orchestration and all the technical wizardry which is so possible. That might be one of the main reasons why the songs from films from North/South are forgotten when the next Ek Do Teen rolls around. Some like VJ (or KJY) is wasted on the masses as a result. Neela songs had a live orchestra, and the arrangements for the songs were by the renowned (better known in the south) Dakshina Murthy. Hence, the feel of the whole album is different and takes you back to another time.
Whether the new MDs seek out the good singers (or not) is moot. The loss, as we can all see, is already theirs. Film music has really become pedestrian in recent times.
KK was featured quite regularly in Aarohi a light music program on Doordarshan (Bombay). Jaidev was one of the in-house MDs for that program. Hariharan, Suresh Wadkar, Preeti Sagar, Nitin Mukesh, Anuradha Paudhwal - were also part of that long-lasting series. Bhakti Bharve, Sudha Malhotra, and Shafi Inamdar were guest presenters of some Aarohi shows. It featured ghazals, geets, naghmas, and bhajans. It was a "alternative" to film music - and was a good change from Chayya Geet and other such film-based programs. VJ has sung non-film light music for Jaidev.
I will write you one of these days. The holiday season here (in North America) is a bit crazy. Too much happening - but it will all be over on 2nd January and then there will be lots of time to think and catch-up.
Query: There is a song in Madhura Geetham which goes: Alaiye Kadalalaiye Yen Vaadugirai, Yethai Thedugirai....Yennennavo Un Asaigal.
Does anyone remember this song? If you do, can you certify if it is by VJ or somebody else? Thanks

Naaz :
is the song u are referring to "alaiyae kadal alaiayae En vaadugiraai" given in
http://www.kumudam.com/music/mainpage.html
under jeyachandran section ( padam thirukalyanam???)
that looks like SJ and not VJ.

Naaz: alaiye kadalalaiye is sj not vj - w/ Jayachandran I think.
Didn't oorukku uzhaippavan/urimaikkural have a vj classical solo - aadiya paathangaL ambalaththil? I think it was picturized on MGR's sister/the 2nd heroine. This is based on vague childhood memory and could be wrong.
Heard a couple very nice vj/kjy duets last night - kannanai ninaiththaal sonnathu balikkum (suprabaatham) and the even better anthiyil chandiran varuvathEn? adhu aanandha bOthaiyai tharuvathEn (enna thavam seithEn?)?

Thanks Kik, mani. Yes, Thirukalyanam - It was a Jayalalitha movie, right? It was a SJ solo - thanks for the help and correction.
I've been breaking my head (almost) thinking of a song in Madhura Geetham - and am confusing it will all sorts of other songs from that period. Does anyone know the song from Madhura Geetham? I just believe that there was a VJ solo from that which was given a lot of airtime on VivdhaBharati. Madhura Geetham was a Sri Vidya movie and VJ was given quite a few of her solos in those days (such as Thayaki Vechcha En Thangame, 7 swarngalukul and others).
AVR maybe you will be happy to receive a reply from someone else.... :-) New year, new beginning and all that!
Maname Solayam (Sadurangam?) is a nice solo by VJ. And I also like Manjal Vanna Roja (Ennadi Meenatchi) - quite a vivacious melody.

kik, there is no VJ song in Urimaik Kural. "Aadiya Paathangkal" is from "Ooruku Uzaipavan".
"Kannanai Ninaithaal" is real good song. In Tamil MSV-VJ combination is surely better than otherMD-VJ combination. You are right karthik. I agree.

I have some rare duets of VJ. (Thanks to Ceylon radio...)
1) Anamika.. En Paeyara ennakku marandhu pona - VJ & SPB (Oru Indhiya kanavu(?) starring Rajeev and Suhasini!)
2) Azhaithal varuvaal kaetaal tharuvaal aval thaanae manaivi - VJ & SPB (Some Shankar& Roopa movie)
3) Kangal sonnadhu por thoduka - VJ & Rajkumar Bharathi (A nice melodious piece in the movie Yuthagaandam starring SriPriya & Rajeev)
4) Kaadhal purindhadhu kaaval arindhadhu yaradhu manmadhana..- A nice duet by VJ and S.N.Surendhar (I think the movie is "Vetri" by S.A.Chandrashekar. This movie also had another duet by VJ & SNS some kinda brother-sister song!!!)
There was also a nice duet by VJ & Raj Seetharaman. Unfortunately I do not remember the song or the movie!!!
Some more solos of VJ
1) Srilanka chinna raani vaa ranga - Pilot Premnath(??)

Now a quiz from my side:
Who is the luckiest heroine for whom VJ sang most of the songs?
I don't know thw answer. Just guessing must be K R Vijaya or SriPriya...

Though I was able to find Meghame meghame in the net, I couldn't find En ullil engo in the net. It will be great if someone could help me with this song.
