Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Here's another NaazQuiz:
Name the film:
1. Muththamizihilil Paadavandhen
2. Kaaviri Nagarinil Kadarkarai Orathil
3. Kodivitta Siru Mullai Malare
4.Malligai Mullai Poo Pandhal
(Ramki and Neel can hold their horses for a bit :-))

Karthi, are you very sure about uyarndhavarkaL a SG film? I remember listening to the song on Radio long back & the MD was MSV... (It's a TR Balu film featuring Kamal I think)

Kamal and Sujatha, that is correct, Eden. It was the remake of the hindi hit Koshish (Sanjeev Kumar/Jaya Bhaduri) directed by Gulzar. In tamil the film was a thundering flop. I thought the music was by MSV, as well.

Who in the current singers (newcomers) can muster a song like Kavithai Kelungal (I am listening to it right now...gooseflesh inspiring!) I wonder.... Vani, Vani thaan!

Naaz:
Kavita Krishnamurthy, Chitra can do that, IMO. Vani would do it probably better, but these two CAN do it.

Chitra/Kavita are Vani's contemporaries - Punnagai Mannan had songs by Chitra in it as well and Kavita had her own following in Bombay at that time with her songs in Mr.India. Vani might be their senior, but she was part of the film set-up then. I do like Kavita K. But would you agree that they both C&K don't have quite the range (octave) that VJ can touch. I am thinking of Kavita's Kehta Hai Mera Yeh Dil Piya from Jeans (just to compare) as it does has some interesting shifts - but she still does it a notch lower. Chitra's voice lacks that "gambeertha" ("bass") - although she is an accomplished artiste. Listen to Vani/Chitra duet in Swatikiranam "Jabila Jabilamma" and "Shruti Neevu"
- they are good examples of tone and timbre. A song like Kavithai Kelungal needs a bit of full-bodied "robustness" (for lack of a better term) and I wonder if C&K can indeed pull it off....But it is an interesting possibility, for sure.

Hayo! a small gap!
The song I mentioned is, "Pon manach Chenamaip punn padach cheithavar yaaro ivar yaaro?" from "Chirithu Vaaza Vendum".
Ramki, I don't think "Machanap Paarudi" is by SPS. I am very sure it is VJ-SJ duet. If u have that song please listen for me. I don't have it now. Both of them sings as if they are from street. :-))
"Nalla Kanavanuku Manaiviyaanaval" is from Lalitha. Valampuri Somanathan's movie. (I think so).

Naaz well said about Kavithai Kellungkal. I think other than VJ, the singers who can sing that song well are PS, SJ and LRE.

Naaz:
Note that even I like VJ more than K and C. BUT..
The fantastic shifts in Kavidhai Kelungal can definitely be managed by KK. I have heard more of KK so here are a few examples :-
1)The Bhairavi songs - a flop film with excellent classical songs. Om namah shivay by KK and Roopkumar Rathhod is a connoisseurs delight. And Kavita manages the taans so well.
2)The song "albela sajan aayo re" from Hum dil de chuke sanam. Classical beauty
3)The song "Nimbooda" and "dhol baje" from HDDCS have a tiny breathless act by KK with her voice reaching quite a height.
4)I have heard concerts by KK wherein she sang "saathi re ..." (Asha-Ravindra Jain song) really, really, really well.
5)the Lok seva sanchar song "baje sargam" with Bhimsen Joshi... connoisseur's treat!!
Unfortunately the nadir that HFM is at today, does not allow full exposure of her talents. Other examples of KK masterpieces are her songs with Ronu Mazumdar, RDB, and the ones in Sur Sangam with the Benaras twin Rajan Sajan Mishra.
Yes, but I wonder whether KK is a contemporary of VJ - she is younger than VJ by about 15 years?? I think she comes in the newer lot.
Okay, I must stop digressing :-))
Have u heard "konda konallo" and "teli manchu karigindi" by VJ from Swathikiranam. While VJ has as usual really done justice to her work, I must thank KVM for the special moments I have got due to these compositions of his. He is really and truly a wonderful maestro (rather was - I heard about his recent death from a Tamil friend). I wonder how he got the idea of putting guitar pieces in a song like "konda konallo".
And about "aanathi neeyara"....hmmmmmmmmmmm this song by VJ beats "kavithai kelungal"!!! This is IMVHO VJs BEST song (maybe mangala kannagi ???)
:-) And KVMs vivid imagination makes the last 1 minute a nail-biting finish!!! (I have never before been excited upon listening to a song :-))
Naaz, you have left my query a few posts back unanswered. (query about more info about gita govindam, any more ghazal or kajri, thumri, jhhoola albums by VJ...)
Many thanks again.

2. Kaaviri Nagarinil Kadarkarai Orathil - Vaazhnthu Kaatugiren
3. Kodivitta Siru Mullai Malare - Mayor Meenatchi

"Muthal Iravu". Do u all remember the movie? If so everyone remembers the JC-PS duet "Manjchal Nilavuku". The other songs didn't become so popular. There is Kuravan-Kurathi duet in that movie. It is a duet by MV-VJ. If u just listen the song. Don't watch. You feel as if a Kuravan and Kurathi are singing a song. I really laughed when I heard first time. The song is, "Aasai Vechean Um melathaan".

uyarndhavargaL MD IS Shankar Ganesh.
Regarding Swathi kiranam, yes VJ did a very good job. But Her voice didnt suit the 10 yr old boy. I felt Im not suggesting that they should have made SJ sing like a child(:))) but KVM could have chosen some young voice. Before watching the movie i was guessing jabili jabilamma must be for Radhika(vj for radhika) and her teenage daughter(chitra), but was shocked to see/listen VJ singing for Manju. Talk about wrong choice of singers :)
This could be one of the reasons why the movie bombed at BO(Though i liked it very much)

Full Marks to VGS. Good score!
AVR - Kavitha is indeed a fine singer. No doubt. I was only commenting on her Octave range. I have heard the songs you mentioned. Even the title song in Khalnayak is a good one. Kavitha was very much a part of the Aarohi song-program (around the time that VJ was also singing for Jaidev). Yes, she is younger - however, they were "current" as far as her career goes (compared to sadhana, alka, sujatha, - who may have had a song or two in the 80s but came to prominence a lot later.) VJ/KK also did their riyaz together for Jaidev/Raghunath Seth in Bombay. VJ talks fondly of KK.
KVM is a great loss to the industry for sure. Ramki, VJ singing for the boy was on the insistence of KViswanath the director who wanted a repeat of Shankarabharanam.
Tidbit: VJ was approached to sing for the remake of Shankarabharanam (sur sangam) - but guess what she was offered...the little girl's alaaps (who grows up to be Rajalaxmi) and all the other songs were to be sung by Lata (music:Lax-Pyare). VJ declined (of course) as she had won the National Award for her songs in the original and was not going to do a few alaaps just to be in the "hindi" remake. Incidentally, the Hindi remake flopped. Why might that be....I wonder.
AVR - I will write you a detailed message soon. I checked my mail and there was no query from you. Did you get the address right?
