i was listening to "mellap pesungal" from "kasedhaan kadavulada". it goes "mellap pesidavo pirar ketkakkoodaamal". does this word exist in tamil? isn't this an example of lyrical abaththam? pls correct if wrong.

One line I have played over several times in my mind trying to understand what the lyricist meant when he wrote 'Poi onru sol kanne...
Nijam undan kAdal enrAl...' (from 'Yennai KAnavillaye' - KAdal DEsam)
If her KAdal is Nijam, why should she lie about it?

Ramki,
andha pAttai paththi pEsAdheenga...In one of the lines, it goes sthg like "karu varayum karuppu dhAn". enna pEththal idhu ???
Like vErvai another word with which VM is obsessed is this neju kuzhi !!! another line goes like "unnai vechirukkum en nenju kuzhiyum kaRuppu dhAn"
Aatha,
If i remember it right, the lines are...
"meyyAga nee ennai virumbAdha pOdhum,
poi onru sol kaNNE en jeevan vAzhum,
nijam undhan kAdhal enrAl...."
I interpret it this way,
nee, "unnai virumbugirEn" nu ennidam poi sonnAlE, nAn sandhOsha paduvEn, appadiyirukkumbOdhu uNmayAgavE nee ennai virumbinAl, I donno what state i wud be in.
does it make sense ?? :-)

I donno somebody mentioned before,
The whole song "Raja raja cholan naan" is a abaththam. You cannot find any meaning or continuity in lyrics. It goes like this,
Raja raja cholan naan
enai aaLum kAdhal dEsam nee dhAn
"dEsaththai" aaLalAm, dEsam eppadi aaLa mudiyum ?
And all the following lines don't have continuity.
I think this song purposefully made to prove the melody is stronger than words.
BTW, music is IR, who is Lyricist ?

IR Fan.,
Mu. Metha is the Lyricst for 'Raja Raja Chozhan'.,
But I strongly disagree with your comment., I feel the lyrics are decent enough. 'KaNNoodu kaNkaL eeTRum kaRpoora Deepamee., Kai theeNdum poothu paayum Minsaaramee' ponDRa minnal varikaL anthap paattil aRputhamaay vanthirukkum.
"Enai AaaLum kaathal desam" Enpathu oru muraNaana kaRpanai., Pothuvaaga MannarkaLthaan desaththai aaLuvaarkaL., Ingee, Kaathal desam, Intha Raja Raja CHozhanai aaLkiRathu., Ithil enna thavaRu ?
Others, What do you feel ?

somehow, i also felt it was an abaththam. but NagaS's logic does make sense.

Nagas are u sure 'karuppu'is not by VM??
I read somewhere that VM wrote different set of lyrics but Cheran wanted him to modify it to meet up the current standard(!!) of lyrics:))
S(shankar?)yes naanum ketten 'karuvaraiyum karuppudhaan'-deivathukku veLichaM. Only logical line in the whole song was

Ramki.,
I am sure it is by Pa. Vijay.,
Initially they asked VM To write., But due to some problem., They scrapped the whole song except the first two lines (Karupputhaan enakku pidichcha color., avan kaNNu reNdum ennai mayakkum 100000(?) Watts poweruuuuu) and then Vijay wrote the rest. It seems he wrote 300 karuppu's out of which Cheran and Deva chose 30 which are there in the recorded song ;-)

I think I read an interview of Vijay in similar lines and support NagaS. It came in Dinakaran, I believe.
But my humble request is that a song with such a lyrical quality (karuppu thaan enakku pidichcha colru or erumai thaan enakku pidichcha mirugam) does not deserve to debated on who really "created" it. Such wonderful creations can just be dumped without even a second thought :-)Anyway, the day is not far off when we will have a film named "karuppu thaan enakku pidichcha coloru" going by the trend :-)

Nagas,
VM might get one more national award for
the song you have mentioned. VM gets all
his sadistic, masochistic and cannibalistic
pleasures on crude display in almost all
his songs nowadays and still manages to
get the national award !!!
Monopoly has some ugly forms and this
is one of them. Already the thenisai of
Deva can scare people away and the vaira
varigal of Diamondu will make a deadly
combination and becos of the vaira varigal,
even Deva might get the national award soon
(Actually there should be a category for
Best Copied Music !!!).
The same Diamondu was mentioning that the std
of lyrics was very bad in early 90s and now has
done his best to lift the quality of lyrics
which can be understood from the examples given
above !!!

vm was looking for a teasing word....for kajol
ondra kanne or muttai kanne will invite more trouble from many, so pulvar kavingar shri
shriman vairathumuthu aka "vilang something"
decided something better and catchy (like you can catch it with hand, lips etc -----> so strawberry was picked,
it can also be used in hindi, telugu, french, german and ofcourse english.

I vaguely remember a T.Rajender lyrical masterpiece which contained this technologically advanced metaphor :
thendralathan uRpathiyai avaL vAnathukku kathuthanthavaL
While the meaning behind it can be gathered with some effort, the uRpathi word is, well, abatham. aduthadhu enna, thozhiRchAlaiya?

Guys,
poetry is a form of art and poets have a certain license to exaggerate, tilt and modify the meanings to get an artful. To say that it is not exaggerated, tilted or modified as per your taste only goes to mean that you are not matured enough to understand the beauty in those lines. That does not mean there are no 'abathams' in lyrics. But what is a good poetic transformation is also distorted as abathams.
to say some eg:-
'karu varai ' is a good translation and intended pun on 'garba graham' which in temples is black.
straw berry kaNNe is like saying meenvizhi or maan vizhi.
enai aaLum kaadhal dhesam is an ironic inverted simily.

Aandava, even with some "efforts" enakku andha T Rajendar lines-in "meaning-ai gather" paNNa mudiyalai - please help me!
BTW, naan oru kuzhandhai is indeed by KD and not vaali.
cram, Raja raja sozhan's first two lines, I don't think, are abathams. They are somewhat similar to "...pudhaiyal ennai koLLai adiththaal..." in "kaNNum kaNNum koLLai adiththaal".
Again, I don't see why you can't accept "blue eyes". "kayal vizhi" is a very common usage in tamil, right? and a kayal's vizhi is mostly blue or green. So, blue eyes are as common as muththup pOndra parkaL.

As part of abathams, I think it's VM closely followed by IR (why at all should he write songs!)who pioneered the usage of "aruvaruppaana" and "amagalamaana" and not-so-nice-sounding words in tamil songs like 'vErvai', 'nenju kuzhi', "aatththaa", "vadhavai" etc. I think VM and the like must improve their vocabulary of decent words!
