i was listening to "mellap pesungal" from "kasedhaan kadavulada". it goes "mellap pesidavo pirar ketkakkoodaamal". does this word exist in tamil? isn't this an example of lyrical abaththam? pls correct if wrong.

Perhaps the lyricist wrote it as
maNNavaLE maNNavaLE.

Ramki,
I think this is what GA wrote:
men mana-gangaiyil sangamikka
(ennidam) pangu vaikka
pongidum paNbenum poompunalil
bOdhaiyilE manam pongi niRka
(paNbinAl) thangi niRka
kAlam ondrAi chErAdhO
If you see the usage/non-usage and combination of words it is actually a creative expression of illicit love, lust, restraint and helplessness.

on varaathu vantha naayakan - even if the second line is ivan thalaivi naayakan, it's redundant. naayakannnu sonnavudanE thalaivikkum naayakannu thaanE artham? thalaivi naayakanaa illaama, villikkaa naayakanaa iruppaan?
mannavaL etc. are legitimate words. e.g. kambar uses mannavai in plural

There is this song in 'Kodi parakadhu'.
"Selai kattum pennukku oru vaasam undu kandadhunda kandavargal sonnadhunda"
vaasam - kandathunda does not go well together. Relating smell with vision. Unless there is really
cool meaning behind this, it looks like an abatham
to me.

rajesh the song selai kattum pennukoru vasam kandathunda means oru penn selai kattumpothu avalukku oru vasam varum yaravathu atha kavanichirukengala-the word kavanichirukengala is meant as kandathunda,IMHO this is what the kavingar is trying to say in the song(actually i did not see any vasam in a girl wearing saree, sathiyamaga, unmayaga, nichayamaga.)

Rajesh, just like you said 'it looks like an abatham to me'. It should have been 'sounded like abatham to me ':-)))).
thaNNeeril moozhgaathu kaatruLLa panthu
YennOdu nee paadi vaa sinthu
Marupadi pirakkum unakkoru ....thai
uraippathu geethai from illakkaNam maaruthO. The last line by KD is only a filler and close to being an abaththam.

kk,
i agree with u on the redundancy part. i suppose redundancy can qualify as abaththam, can't it?

chandy,
i specifically avoided mentioning the muqabla-type songs because they simply don't merit discussion, it's a waste of time trying to locate meaning in them. but several "pure tamil" songs contain lines that sound good because of the tune, but on closer inspection, seem to be abaththams. that's what i wanted to highlight here. in the process, i have also learnt where i went wrong.
take "poovil vandu koodum". VM writes "paatham meethu modhum, athu paadum suprabhaatham". sounds good, certainly, but what does it convey?

Makkale,
For God's Sake, do not try to make any meaning
out of VM's lyrics. VM already claims his lyrics
have scientific info, if he comes to know all
these interpretations for his abathams (like
kaatrulla panthu, vullurikkum vervai, ...), he'll start using them more. Then, even God can not save us :)

Response to Mellapesungal -
pirar ketkakoodamal is absolutely fine . koodamal means something not happening - like in kai koodamal poivittathu.so this means no body can hear what i tell u - as u know this is a combi.of words like koodaamal and ketkaamal.it is acceptable.

Wow! A very interesting thread...pala idangaL sirippai varavazhaiththana....
Another abatham (noted in Kumudham's Arasu BadhilgaL):
nalam nalamariya aaval - UN
nalam nalamariya aaval
nee ingu sugamE
naan angu sugamaa...?
-- 'nee ingu sugamE'-vukkum 'un nalamariya aaval'-ukkum ethanai muraNpaadu! Idharku arasuvin badhil: "kavinyargaLin balam karpaNai, balaveenam logic!"
cram, about that song neela niram...I didn't see any abatham there! I took it like this (even when I first heard that song):
The heroine's eyes are soooooo blue (like someone said "saavu kaLai"?:))) that the hero wonders if that has gone out to spread over the sea and the sky!
Another anecdote...
when Kannadhaasan was questioned during a program on AIR about the the line (capitalized) in the song "naan oru kuzhandhai nee oru kuzhandhai...ORUVAR MADIYILE ORUVARADI" (how is it possible?), it seems that he just plainly quipped back saying "if you can accept 'nilavu pOndra mugam' and "muthup pOndra parkaL" then why can't you accept this?
But, I very much feel that "oruvar madiyilE oruvaradi" is highly possible, what do you say? :))

Ramki, the song "Raasathi Manasula" will make more sense if you had seen the movie! But, even after that you'd wonder if it could be written better! But one thing's for sure, lyrics nowadays make us all "deep" thinkers!

karthi,
i don't see any problem with "oruvar madiyile oruvaradi" either. muthalil kaadhalan madiyil kaadhali, piragu vice-versa. ippadiye maththi paduththakalaam illayaa:-)))
when we try to interpret lyrics literally, these are the problems that could arise.
similarly, the song "madi meethu thalai vaiththu vidiyum varai thoonguvom". eppadi mudiyum? oruvar madiyile innoruvar thoongalaam, rendu perume ore nerathile thoonga mudiyuma? secondly, why would lovers talk about sleeping, unless they mean sleeping with each other? (limittai thaandareno?:-))] or is it that they are so tired of singing duets that they just want to crash:-)).

I heard this song recently in the MSV-TKR legends cassette.
"Singarap Punnagai Kandale Podhum Sangeetha Veenaiyum Edhukkamma?"
Sangeetha Veenai is liked for the music. Why would punnagai replace music? Maybe something like "Mangatha Mazhalaiai Kettale Podhum Sangeetha Veenaiyum Edhukkamma" would hv better. Even Thiruvalluvar wrote "Kuzhalinidhu Yaazhinidhu enbar tham makkal mazhalai chol keladhavar". He didnt write "Kuzhalinidhu Yaazhinidhu enbar tham makkal azhagu mugam kanadavar!"
