Day after day, despite the efforts I put to forget Raja during the later 80's and late 90's I cannot but say with a lot of regret, what have I done to me.
But, I am making up, my buying left, right, center all of Raja's CD' here in Chicago. Each hit songs of Raja's makes me feel that only God himself could have done this for us.

The songs ' Enna venum thinnugada - uyarndha ullam) and 'valavaikkum kadhalukku je - aboorva
sogothargal' have the same starting tune, which
incidently resembles the elton john song 'grey seal'.

Hi
The lastest raja album
Kangalin Varthaigal by Muktha Srinivasan.
Except one song - Ali sundravali by Arul mozi
(this would have been more nice if spb had sung this)
All the other songs (4 more) are CRAP.
Raja tries to change his style by trying new grooves and beats -- alas fails pathatically....
He can retire instead of trying something like this. Recording is also below par.
This movie is claimed as romantic musical theme.
Let me know if anyone wants to hear it, i will put songs it in my site..
As a musician -- I cannot accept it just because it is Raja's score.-->A Total waste.

srikanth,
i heard that the songs of kangalin varthaigal were dubbed from a telugu(or kannada?) movie.perhaps the original versions were better.i
also read in another thread that the lyrics were bad spoiling the songs further.srikanth ,if u get a chance listen to guru and yathramozhi both mallu films.the songs in these 2 films are a class apart from the other tamil songs that are being discussed here in this thread.as far as IR's recent trend in tamil albums is considered,it has been one or two brilliant numbers with a few other numbers that just pass muster.overall as an album i liked these 2 mallu
albums better than any other tamil album, even though i did not understand a word of the lyrics.
that is the beauty of classical music !

Srikanth: Try listening to 'nammoora mandhaara hoovE' the kannada original of kangaLin vaarthaigaL. I listened to both. The recording was so bad in the tamil version that I felt that instruments were even missing. :-). BTW the kannada version of alli is sung by SPB. Added incentive? :-)

Well typo - it should read 'some instruments'..

Srikanth,
I feel it is harsh to classify "Indha kadhaal seiyum velai" as a CRAP song. It is
as good as Alli song if not better

I thought Nammoora Mandara Hoove was great. I have this question. Is the introduction song, actually short? Is it in the cassette/cd a full length song?
If someone knows, let me know.
Yes, Srikanth, if you can place the first song in the Kannada movie at your site, it will be great. I am not able to buy the CD either the Tamil of Kannada version here in Chicago.
The truth is: If IR's songs are copied into anothe language, then the quality of recording is just worthless.

All the songs in NMH are exceptional. kangaLin vArthaigal is badly recorded but even in KV, the song srirAmanE stands out.

Hi,
A pleasure of my lifetime..
Today, I was coming back from office in my car playing enai thalata varuvayoo. Due the weekend mood and pleasure of the song the sound was little more than usaual.
since the weather was good I had opened my sun roof and window.
In a traffic signal I stopped for few minutes -hearing the song, the car in the next lane - an american - made some signs at me,
I thought he was screaming at me for the volume,
I reduced the volume and asked him what he wants, he told the song was very very good and very emotional. He enquired about the langange of the song and the composer.
I am proud to be a tamilian.
Thanks to Raja

Dear Srikanth,
It is unfortunate that you listened to th tamil version of NMH, I sincerely recommend all IR fans to listen to NMH first before listening to KV or not even listen to KV. NMH is undoubtedly one of the best from IR in 90's.I am right now listening to the "ALLi" song in your site, I am sure many IR fans may not recognise this song also as a great song , because of the quality of recording and absence of SPB. Neenga KV songs ethanai murai CRAP endralum parava illai, aenna, neenga post pannirukkura message (about the American enquiring about "Enna Taalatta varuva") irukke adu podhum

Hi Srikanth/Pal,
I have tried to do this so many time for the songs which I feel everyone should listen to. I would just open the windows and wait for the reaction when stopping at the signal. There have been some attention - turning their heads, but nothing close to what Srikanth has described.
Maybe because this is California (much more fast paced life) and you guys are in Minneapolis.

california-la innum non-indians( asian ) irukkaangalaa enna? :-) mux, I am waiting for your reaction in the threa started by you. :-)
I feel it is becuase of fast paced life or something... I have seen many people ( mainly americans ) noting the friendliness of these people here. There is this lab mate of mine who also likes how to name it very much. He is an ( only ) american. he sings and he has some extra interest in music. SOmething more than dancing in the club.

Raja as a singer:
If you look at the movies which raja scored music lately, you might realize that raja is singing a lot in many of the films. Though I am fan of raja's music, I don't like his voice very much. In kadaluku mariyathai, I felt that 'ennai thalata' would be a good one if spb sang instead of raja (second version). In earlier days, raja did not sing that much. For example take 'payanankal mudivathillai', itayakoil, udaya geetham, thalapathy, mouna raagam, anjali, ithayathai thirudathey, etc., raja sang only in few songs. Why is he doing now?

Mano: Look at ponnu oorukku puthusu, geethaanjali (tamil) etc. IR sang almost all the songs in those movies. So this is not recent.

Responses to apathy for Raja's Voice, and 'Raja should Retire':
The most important cornerstone in Raja's musical presentations has been Raja's own initiative to bring to the hearts of the people of Tamil nadu, Raja' voice that easily reminds us of the folk origins of music. What I am saying is: that is the legend behind Raja. No other MD in India and abroad (as far as I know) has brought us closer to the composer than has Raja has done by communicating with his own voice, mor than by using his brilliant orchestra.
There is something unique about Raja, which I have not come across in any other genius in any field of endeavour. That is the capacity to continually evolve from one level of perfection to another level of perfection. If you see what I mean, at the highest level of perfection, Raja is simply moving across various platforms of musical creativity. This man started at the highest level and released all boundaries for musical imagination. To expand on my point: when I listen to Annakkili, then go a few years later to Tik, Tik, Tik, then to Idaya Koil, then to Iduyathe Thirudathe, then to Yejaman, then on to Guru in Malayalam, KM in Tamil, Nammoora Mandara Hoove in Kannada, then to his Carnatic recitals, and to his Symphony ventures, this man is just going on with the same energy levels as before and same philosophy about pleasing different types of listeners and creating history all the time. Who in the history of this world has accomplished this?
Who can ever say that Raja can retire? If he is producing less film music, it is because Raja has been spending time building his new studio, introducing his Sons, giving a break to his mechanical prolificity and perhaps spending a little for the first time in 20 years, reminiscing about his great works and spending more time giving concernts, etc.
I do not foresee Raja retiring in the next five to 10 years as he is certainly up to something to round up his career. This man has never needed any influence of drugs, emotional outburst or any applause to continue his creativity unlike many of the legends such as Mozart, Shakespeare who eventually burnt out either because of emotional exhaustion of because of the overwhelming dosage of opium!
I think Raja has still half a bottle of his original energy conserved and will continue for another 10 years and since we all know that he is a part of the public psyche in South India, everyone of us would like to see him revived just as we are seeing the great Sivaji Ganesan and even MSV being kept active in films today.
No wonder, all the stalwarts of South Indian cinema are devoted to bringing back Raja to all of us.

a small digression!
nobody retires on their own (except sunil gavaskar who called it a day when he was at the top). market forces relegate somebody to the background even if he/she has been extremely good in the past.
If raja is to retire, it will not be because he has nothing else to deliver but because he has not turned out any new hits in the past or the audience have grown tired of his music. the same applied to msv and will apply to ar rahman. one does not have to feel bad about this at all.
legends like TMS had to exit because there was a demand for new voices and this is happening to spb now (whether we like it or not) spb himself acknowledged this fact in one of his tv interviews.
the only way anybody can defer retirement is by delivering goods continously and be receptive to changing moods of the audience. the other criterion for early exit is decrying emerging trends. msv did it to ilayaraja and ir did it for ar rahman.
my thoughts span across multiple subjects in tfm forum.
i look forward to arguements on my pet theme as above
