Here is what i found::
Typical of Shankar, the director is not prepared to say much about the film at this point. However, it is known that the film will be very youthful, almost teeny-bop, in content, with the majority of the cast being in the 16-23 age group.
Shankar, apparently, has decided to cast all new faces in his film – and the younger the better.
In fact, a mention in various Tamil periodicals, and an accompanying advertisement to the effect that Shankar was looking for new faces, has created a headache of sorts for the producers. Curriculums vitae have been pouring in to the Surya Movies post box ever since the ad and the story ran in the vernacular press – and last heard from, the flood shows no signs of abating.
Curiously enough, the ad appears – thanks to emails and discussion groups – to have reached an audience abroad as well, with the result that newer batches of applications have US, British and suchlike stamps on them, which suits the producer and director fine since the film does incorporate a lot of NRI faces.
For Shankar, Boys will be a return to romance after Kadhalan, and to comedy after the Aishwarya Rai-Prashanth starrer Jeans. Though the film will feature fresh – and ergo, inexpensive – faces, Shankar maintains that the film will be typical of his style, which means lavish budgets, and expensive production values.

Boys have come of age, VCDs are here
Source: www.newstodaynet.com
NT Bureau
Chennai, Sept 11:
Much against the claims by producer A M Rathnam and director Shankar that their recently released movie Boys cannot be pirated on VCDs since they had spent a few crores on investing for a special technology to curb piracy, it is now reported that the pirated versions (in the form of VCDs) have been doing brisk sales in the city for a couple of days.
The expensive movie, made at a cost of around Rs 22 crore, was released last week. However, it had to face the wrath of critics for alleged obscenity. The movie is about five college students and their struggle to succeed in life. The alleged obscenity and vulgarity in the movie drew protests from Puthiya Thamizhagam president Dr K Krishnaswamy and a few women's organisations, which forced producer Ratnam to remove the 'objectionable' scenes.
Hype is always a part of director Shankar's movies. Boys, which was under production for over a year, was also much hyped and talked about even before its release. During the pre-launch publicity, it was advertised that the pirated VCDs of Boys would not come, since the production company had invested a huge amount on a technology to counter VCD piracy and the very fact that they are being made in digital format. A section of press even highlighted the issue frequently.
Even at the audio launch of Boys, where the entire Tamil film industry gathered, this issue was discussed at large and was hailed by one and all.
Sources said, the movie was sold at rates higher than the market rate in a few areas for the fact that pirated VCDs of the movie cannot be released and the audience should throng theatres to watch the film. Even the promos much before the film's release in theatres stressed the fact that piracy is killed with regard to Boys.
It is said that film's VCD costs Rs 70 and is available at VCD parlours in the city at Rs 30 for hire.
The actual cost of the VCD can be realised by renting the VCD for just three customers. It is also said that those objectionable scenes removed from the movies about a couple of days ago, finds place in these VCDs. It is further reported that the audio and video reproduction is good in the VCDs and it doesn't look like a pirated one.
Rathnam, who is already in trouble after the release of Boys has also been burdened with the VCD coming out much against their predictions.

raycas, Paran and everybody else in the gang who are trying to justify the vulgarity in Boys. Have you ever thought of Idam - Porul. There is a place for anything to be done.
reycas do you want Indians to start expressing their sexual feelings openly? Man I pity you. How many do you think, in India are suppressing their feelings? BTW, is the movie Boys taken to educate anybody on Sex?
How many of us haven't seen porn. But there is a strict rule that it can't be seen in the office. There is something that it can't be seen in open. There is a place for everything. Nobody questions being nude in the restroom ??????!!!! But in the dining room?
People had great expections on Shankar and how his movie must be. What Shankar did not understand was Idam - Porul. He must have gotten it lately that's why he agreed to edit the movie later. What you guys are doing is undigestible arguments.

excellent Venki.. my vote is for u... mm .. its really a big disappointment from Shankar... I don't understand what he is trying to prove from Boys... if he is much into western culture.. or he wants to make an american pie he would have done it by making an English movie.. y he wants to make a south indian movie like that.. In his early movies.. he tried to prove what tamil movie is capable of.. he showed the Tamil way...sometime we felt like lifting our collars in front of the northies.. saying that how sound we r technically ... We were really proud of our buddies (Shankar & ARR).. Everything is gone in the wind with boys.. i don't know what these guys achieved technically in boys... they said that they have shot the song alai with 36 cameras which was used for making matrix.. not that impressive though.. 5.1 digital track sound.. is a nice one.. but the movie doesn't deserve that..
spent 22 crores to prove that he can make a movie like American pie.. Selvaraghavan is the best .. atleast he spent very little to prove that... ooooops... then the characters in the movie.. have u ever seen those kind of Boys anywhere on the roads of chennai.. ridiculous... But on the other hand .. u have seen the real youth of the present world on Thulluvatho Ilamai.. In one word we can say that Shankar spent 22 crores and wasted the real talents like Ravi K chandran and Sabu Cyril... to give this crap..

Guys,
I generally like Shankar movies. But I have one concern with him. He don't know how to make a low budget movie. Why is this??
Always spends through his head, rely on technology and special effects. How about relying on proper human emotions?
When asked him, he was telling cock and bull story! He was telling I will be showing Cow dung etc.. Directors like KB, BR spends less bet yet achieve better results. I don't know why it has not occurred to Shankar.
Now see, people will be scared to produce his movies. I think he has the talent to give good movies, but don't know why it has not occurred to him that he can give good movies with low budget also.

Venki,
I find your argument quite baseless.
When Hey Ram was released, it was hailed as a technical film and Kamal was criticised for all the "obsenities". Though a few scenes in it were downright vulgar.
There's nothing wrong actually with the movie "Boys" IMO. When so many movies have shown prostitutes (i mean actresses portraying a prostitute!), why even take Chandni Bar where the director showed the plight of bar girls, Nothing was found wrong. But the moment someone like Shankar shows them, there's a big hue and cry about it.
And about the nudity bit, what was so misplaced about it?? Why is it that he portrays something in a film and gets stoned while the same goes on in a subtler variety in the rest of India and it gets labelled "Lakme Fashion Week" and gets the kinda media coverage that it certainly didnt deserve!
Accepted, Boys isnt a film taken to educate ppl about sex, but neither is it a film to portray Teenagers as innocent angels. It portrays them as they are, raging hormones included.
And Shankar didnt "realise about Idam-porul" and censor the scenes!! He had to coz of all the pressure surrounding the film.
And Bala.. i'd say u've pretty much wasted ur vote! Shankar's not tried to portray the influx of Western culture. He's tried to portray teenagers in today's open, frank and pretty much anything-but-innocent world! Teenagers who try to fight it out in the big bad world on their own.
I still say Boys had nowhere near the element of sexuality shown in few films in the 80s and 90s with songs where the Singer(the female in all probablity) has to ooh and aah in a disgusting, sickening,supposed-to-be-erotic way.
When Kadhal Kondaen had nudity where Dhanush (the heartthrob!!????!) strips down.. it goes down as a part of the film. But when it comes to Boys, which deals with pretty much the same age group with a more sane mentality, it is an unforgivable sin!
If Boys did one thing, it made ppl sqiurm thinking "Damn! That's me!"
This is the first time i've actually got down to type such a lng post. But I felt it was about time i voiced the view of a teenager who's pretty cool about the facts of life.
ps:
Bala..
i couldnt resist typing this one..
"we can say that Shankar spent 22 crores and wasted the real talents like Ravi K chandran and Sabu Cyril... to give this crap.."
hehe.. i guess this constitutes much more than one word!!!

and Anbe Sivam..
If Shankar's the kinda guy who thinks big, who are we to tell him to lower his standards.
Whatever he does, he does on a massive scale.
Let him be.

You can watch a porn movie and see the actor there, and say "that's the damn thing I do and its damn me". Its better certain things are not told the way they happen.
