Hello Friends:
Here is a Visual BGM prototype for some commercially available "video" with no music...Music was composed and performed by me...due to space and other restrictions, I had to post only 2 min of 5.2 min length clip...
http://home.comcast.net/~vijayaditya/MusicVideo-Prototype.mp3
It was interesting to compose for this clip...
This is kind of > PG-13 video...but I would say very romantic and thrilling...
My suggestion is to watch this clip but please don't blame me if you don't like the video content...Recommendation is to watch leisurely:-))
Originally this clip didnot have any audio...
I saw this clip many times before composing the music to have an idea of how events between characters are picturized...then interpreted each event with my own imagination...This lead to the basic composition, and instrumentation...Composing for clip is fun because events are randomly occuring...and the time gap between the events is sometimes too short that you have to complete everything...
This prototype had a purpose and it was kind of met.
It's a great fun...Now the sound track of this video is getting Vocals with lyrics...I hope I can share that sometime.
Anyway, thanks guys for all your patience with me and my music...I am muting down for a while and I don't know how long...This page is GREAT and we have really good talents...Check out Divakar's Cosmos to Chaos...very interesting...
Good Luck to all upcoming and pro musicians here...Accomplish your dreams and do whatever pleases you in life...
Regards,
Aditya

Aditya,
This is a great idea to use existing video and do bgm.
When the girl starts kissing, a change in mood would have sounded good.

Glad to know you found the ideas useful.
Best wishes,

Another tip anyone recording:
The max level of each individual track and the song as such should never exceed 0db. If it does then it will clip and you will hear distortion. Usually, the recording software will have a quick way get the "Statistics" of a wav file which will show the max level for that.

Yes, Jay.
Even while mixing in MIDI, set the overall
volume level of each track to about 70. And then
use the expression controller to control the volume within the track. By using this idea, you
can dramatically improve the mix of a midi file, even without band pass filtering.
Also, draw expression controllers on each and every phrase. (a rise and a fall). And make subtle tempo changes. By using these tricks, even
monotous sounds of machine-sounding midi can be
dramatized into live music. YOu can see many such
ideas in my symphony humsadhwani midi file.
Look for these three things
Track level volume
Use of expression control
Use of tempo changes.
However, since MIDI does not have a band pass filter control, you can not improve further than that...

hello all,
Please chek out my Chamber music piece that I wrote recently. Originally I had written this for Violin and Cello and later experimented with Choirs. I guess it sounded great. its root is C#
with notes C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A, B, C, C#'....hope you will like this one..Send in your thoughts...
you could download it here

Hello people,
Just a request for advice. I am a beginner planning on buying a midi controller keyboard with weighted action (piano-feel) keys... I intend to use it to learn classical piano, and later for composing something perhaps. My budget is $300. I think my SoundBlaster card will do for my needs right now.
The models I am looking at are Fatar Studiologic Sl-760, SL-880, SL-990, and Roland A-33. Any reviews/experiences? Any other good keyboards around?
TIA.

Hari,
For a $300 budget I aint sure if you could get a good MIDI compatible keyboard. I was in a similar position as you and I found that the PSR series (> 500) of Yamaha were to my expectations. Possibly, you may have to stretch a little more.

Thanks DV. I have played on PSR-510 and PSR-740, and they are good keyboards no doubt. However, Yamaha PSR keys (like most others) are synth-action, not hammer action... thats the only complaint as such. I think the keyboards I mentioned retail for > $1000, but some websites offer them for 500 or so, while you can get them on ebay for less than 300 (i think).

Hari,
You are right, they are touch sensitive, but do not have the 'weighted' sound of the Piano keys. I didnt notice that earlier.
About ebay, yes, you get good deals for used ones, if you know the rules of 'auctions'! But most of them are sold by second-hand articles dealers who do not know much about such equipments. So, it is better if you can see them first instead of returning them later paying the shipping cost twice(believe me, for a synthesizer, shipping alone would be around $50 !, one way :))

Hi Hari, I think what you are doing is the best way to go about now. Midi controller(s) + stacked sound modules. I have heard about Fatar Studiologic - they are pretty good with excellent synth action. I suggest you check out individual features like doubling / splitting keys, ribbon controller and knobs), assignable pedals, sequencer trigger etc for each before you make the final decision. You can purchase a separate midi effects controller like oxygen, but check out if fatar has it on board. I have seen reviews of Roland A-33 and find it worth a buy for that price. Another important thing is how accessible the buttons are and how *fast* they work. This is important for live playing. I have seen some professionals use this sort of a set up. Of course nothing beats a keyboard which has everything built in - but still, some of them are expensive compared to this setup.

I mean synth action is weighted action...

Actually, weighted action does not help much for light keyboard playing, works quite well for classical piano playing, but when playing sounds like sax it will be a burden.
Best bet is to get a simple casio keyboard for $250-$300 which has midi capability. just check casios, they are quite cheap and has almost all the features for a starter.

Swamiji and Srikanth, Thanks a lot for the tips. I guess I should clarify that I have previously owned a Casio CTK-110 and a Roland Ep-90 (Digitial Piano) and fooled around a bit on Roland E14 and Yamaha PSR 510 and 740 for live shows.
I have finally decided that my primary focus is to learn classical Piano (I think for the next 4-5 years at least.. and potentially for life), so I think a weighted action keyboard is necessary. I feel these midi keyboards are better than digital pianos for the price (assuming I can get good sound module/sound card/software also later) Essentially, this seems to be the next best value for money compared to a real acoustic piano (which is obviously prohibitively expensive). I intend to use this for practice and occassionally use the university grand piano.
For my composing/orchestration needs, I think I will use this for now. I understand that a synth action keyboard will be more suitable for playing several other instruments... maybe I can get a good one later when I "graduate" out of my current monetary state.

Hari,
Yes - a controller with wighted action is an affordable substitute for a real piano - atleast for learning purposes! You can learn a piece, practice with this and then finally practice with a real piano a few times just to get it right.
I could have followed that idea, but I guess I wanted a real piano quite bad - so I got one before I lost all my enthu. Its a burden especially when you have to move a lot. And then the tuning ... and one cant practice late at night...you will end up waking everyone:) Still real piano is important for serious student (atleast my piano teacher thinks so).

Sorry about personal post.
Hari - pardon me if I am being too nosey ;) - I had some free time so I just looked up your website ...
I think I know u. I remember seeing you at my friend Arun's place in MGM apartments Virugambakkam (I am from AT Nagar). Is that u?
I dont know if you recognize me. I am Arun's friend. He was a bigger music freak than I was - he spent all his time with a band - but I spent all my time with just the keyboard. I used to visit K.V.Bala the guitarist from the same apartment.
World is small indeeed! I met Srikanth that way too after a long time...
