Good song. Your song sounds complete, in terms of good structuring (intro, breaks, interludes, etc) The drumming is lively too.
The only complaint is the noisyness of the recording. THe mix is not clear. THe instruments dont stand out clearly.
Let me explain how I create clarity. After
quite a bit of struggle and trying to avoid any expenditute, I came up with this way that gives
good results. If my recordings are dull, it is
because of the sound source, if they are clear, it is because of this strategy:
1. After creating midi sequence of the whole song, I take each track and play it in solo and record using the sound cards recorder. (I use a $150 sound blaster live). So I will have vocal.wav, guitar. wav, piano.wav, Drum.wav, Perc.wav. (drum will have only kick and lo bongo. Perc will have Snare, Hihats, hi bongo.)
2. Now I cut each of this track into sections using Sound forge that came with the sound card. For
instance, pallavi.wav, anupallavi.wav, charanam 1 part 1.wav, charanam 1 part 2.wav.
3. Now is the fun part. I try to enhance each part now.
Load pallavi.wav into soundforge and then do the following:
add reverb
add a delay copy with decayed volume (like a subtle echo)
Band pass filter it. (I will explain this step little later)
Now the pallavi should sound much better than the first recording you had. I rename this pallavi_processed.wav.
4. After creating processed versions of each of the loops, I use Acid Music ($50 from Sonic foundry) to paint these loops into a song. and mix it.
Here I can draw envelopes to each loop volume and stereo, panning)
This can export to wav or mp3.
The secret of this technique is polish each piece in isolation and then bring it in. I do not use the live reverb or delay plugins because my PC is a lame 166MHz Celeron. With this minimal resources, I have created not-so-bad mixes in
Flowing with the river, Udayamagum velaiyil,
and Once before and temptation.

How to make instruments stand out?
----------------------------------
Film music relies on multiple instrumets playing multiple layers simultaneously to create the immersion effect. Originally this idea came from classical symphonies. There the mixing was simplified by organizing instruments into sections Brass. Woodwinds, Strings, Percussion etc and seating them such that soft instruments like flute will be closer to the listener and hard ones will be farther away. In addition, The composer has to carefully write the music such that, when flutes play, there are very few other blaring instruments etc.
However, when you try to do this using a midi sequence, as you keep adding tracks, the results gets muddled up.
Only way to clarify the mix is to assign different
domains for each of our instruments. Like different channels in which these instruments talk.
This is done by frequency filtering (equalization).
I generally group instruments into 5 bands to get quick results, even though professional mixes
might use 7 to 15 bands.
Bass
High Bass
Middle
Low Treble
High Treble.
I have arrived at my own frequency ranges for each after painful trial and error (all those nice articles on the net about mixing, dont help much in practice!!).
I then assign an instrument into one of these bands. For instance, vocal will be in the middle and low treble. Guitar will be in High bass and Middle and High Treble. Kick drum will be only in bass and hihats only in the High Treble.
Using Sound forge Graphic equalizer, I filter out the tracks accordingly. So my filtered version of processed_kick_drum will have most of it in the low bass region. When you now add these tracks together, there is not much interference across the instruments.
Remember that any such filtering is destructive.
YOu will lose some qualities of the instrument, but in final analysis, it is more important to make overall music sound clear than have an instrument sound most pristine.
Teamwork, what do you say!

Ok..here at last, I have something from my side. I had a casual jamming session with my friends (srinath and others) at charlotte. Sang some songs after a long day at laaaate night. Two from
the session:
mandram vandha - http://dhool.com/MS/jam/mandram.mp3
geetham sangeetham - http://dhool.com/MS/jam/geetham1.mp3

MS, you are gifted with nice voice...Geetham Sangeetham is very nice...very melodious and precision on notes...for singing this kind of great melodies, you don't need anything else - Just Jam it and swirl the listeners...recording was too loud for me. But i still enjoyed by reducing the volume to almost 0.25 cents...It's Good.

Wow! MS I am impressed. I liked both the songs that you sang, especially Mandram vandha, the starting is excellent! ....Great melodies and your singing is so nice....on a side note Great Recording voice too!

MS, Just listened to your songs.. You have a very melodious voice. It sounded so unique... why didn't you try approaching our TFM MDs?? Really amazing. The recording was so pure.. It would have been nicer if you just found a way to delete the breathing sound between the lines... Great stuff!

Listened to Pani Thirai. Excellent job!
Jay, you have kept the mood and subtlety of music. Minimalistic! Lyrical imagery is very good, however, singability of the lyrics can be improved a bit. Good job!

MS, the songs have come out very well. Although I have listened to you sing these in person several times, its much better to hear it when recorded with a proper mic and such. Store these files away safely for future auditions :-)

thx folks. I have been only commenting on your works without being productive. SO I thought a li'l effort shd be put by me b4 I make any further comments on your upcoming works :-) anyway it was a jamming session and we did not really care much to control the volume levels or keep the beat etc. Was more for the heat of the moment :-) Good to hear it has come out acceptably.

rjay,
Thanks for your instructive and constructive criticism, and your solution to it. My style is a little different that, I don't work with MIDI, and I do all the filtering work (except equalizing) in FLStudio. I equalize it in a different software (GoldWave). I do the initial echo stuff in GoldWave, after recording. I am releasing a new song for Aug 15th. I hope to implement your methods to the max in that song. I will upload it once I finish.
Thank you very much.
Regards,
Eswar
