Saravanan,
Karippumanigal was a good one... I dont remember the story of that one.. Was it the one where the heroine is infected by HIV??..
The dhaagam title song goes like this...'Uyir meedhu dhaagam uruvaagum neram, edhir(or edhu) vandha podhum thunayugame '... It's about a murderer who is kind at heart at being close to the jailor's (Rajesh) family and awaiting his execution...
saravanan, i dont remember ranjani's character in Iravil oru pagal? can u throw some light on that?

Sorry- the film that SB directed was Avan Amaran and not Aval Yaar.
SB was also the hero opposite Bhanumathi in Rani-1952.
Another person to have sung for SB in Penn was TA Mothi. The song-'Maadhar thammai izhivu seiyum'

Wow, Prabhu- that's great recalling! I am now flooded with long forgotten memories. Flight 714 (Mowli?)was a treat (with its 'Manukku maram baaramaa' bgm). SV Shekar's Vanna Kolangal was another treat. Galatta Kudumbam had the now famous 'Sethu' Vikram playing the son! Thaayumanavan was Balakumaran's story with Chandrasekar and Vanithasri (of Karai kadantha Oruthi) fame in the lead. Ladies Hostel was another favourite of my mother's- For a long time, I used to think Manga was Nithya's real name! Mariyathai Raman is another serial that comes to mind now. There was a suspense serial directed by Randor Guy starring G Srinivasan and Sowcar Janaki among others. Manorama made us glued to the TV with her Kaattupatti Chathiram. Baby Shalini was highly irritating as 'Ammulu'. I vaguely remember Srpriya also acting in a serial- Viji? Cho too did his bit for DD- Janatha Nagar Colony and another serial based on the freedom struggle- I am not able to recollect its name (Vandhe Maatharam?)- Devilalitha and Cho's brother, Ambi impressed me in this. (I still remember Ambi's character was called Baashyam)
Thiru- Ranjini came as Suresh Menon's wife who dies.

I remember one of Kalki's masterpieces 'Alai osai Seetha ' also made as a serial sometime in 1989

Saravanan,
there was another serial 'Saraswathiyin selvan' (not sure which year it came) by Cho.. This was more like a spoof of all tamil movies..Prior to that was 'Ambicarpathy', starring Y.G. and Ramya krishnan.. Ramya was probably in her 20's when she acted in it...

Saravanan
Thanks for reminding all the old serials. When you talked about flight 714, I couldn't help myself smile involuntarily remembering the episode 'I went to school, school went to town'.
Cho, also had a drama 'madras by night' or something like that which I guess showed on DD.

Yes Saravanan it is dhaagam not sirai, the title song confused me. thanks for the correction.
Thiru andha title song
"Uyir meedhu dhaagam uruvaagum neram, vidhi kaaNum vaazhkkai sirayaanadhae SIRAYAANADHAE"
regd. CHO's sequence, "saaththiram sonnadhillai" same set of people was also very nice drama that was received well.
Thaedi Vandha MaappiLLai(TVM) is the serial that was on DD Madras when the southern district people were hooked on to DD madras as mentioned by Prabhu. TVM was telecasted on thursdays 7:30 pm. If I'm not wrong DD madras started telecasted to southern district on a Thursday. I was thrilled seeing a thamizh, comedy SVSekhar drama on the screen.

S.Balachander had acted in Dr.Savitri and Kodeeswaran too, beside the movies mentioned above. S.V.Vengatraman sings for him in Kodeeswaran.
Saravanan,
Isn't "Mathar thammai" by TAM sung for Gemini Ganeshan in "Penn"?
Can you recall any songs from the movie "Rani"? If you do, could you please list them in the Old Songs page?
Thanks in advance.

I think the Jayakanthan serial on Hindi DD was named Sakthi.
Saravanan, yes I remember Ranjini's appearance very well, thanks for reminding. The chain of events leading to Suresh's first wedding was superb. BGM was at its best, esp at times where Ranjini has a convulsion and collapses, during Suresh's recovery of the film, whenever Salim turns up with his dramatic introduction(funny :)) and also in the last fight.
Looks like most of you guys had the same experience - punished at home with homework from 6-7 and studies from 8-9..so the 7-8 TV+dinner slot was eagerly welcomed to get some relief :-)

Song of the Day: antha seemaiththurai from popcarn.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/antha.rm
- I listened to the songs of the movie popcarn and liked this one. The off-beat nature of this song is good, reminds me of the song in devathai, andam kidukidukka.

- I think that Nasser is a highly talented actor, who is largely unused and wasted in thamizh mainstream. He has a theater background (he was involved with Na. Muthusamy's kooththu-p-pattarai), and held his own in movies like devar magan and kurudhippunal (which is his best, IMO). I liked his Avatharam, a different venture, that showed off his abilities as a creator and director. I remember watching it in Nagesh theater, with only 4-5 others in the whole cinema. Some time, when I feel I can adequately express what I feel about that great song, I will write about "thendral vandhu theeNdumbOdhu". Mean while, if you can write on that song, I will be glad to feature it in SOTD.
Unfortunately, both Avatharam and Devathai flopped, and Nasser has compromised. Maayan was a disappointment. I haven't seen Popcarn yet, but it hasn't got great reviews.

Talking about DD serials, Neela Mala by Chozha Ponnurangam had a very good title song and good BGM by Balabarathi, which was very IRish.
Anybody remembers Suhasini's Penn serial episodes? Each had a different story and a cine actress. The haunting BGM was by IR.

Saravanan,Prabhu
That was a superb "Woodies" stuff on TV serials of the 80s.
Did I see CHO s Vandhemathram serial discussed. That was one of the best efforts till date.the period effect (despite the shoestring budget!) ,terrific acting by the aged CHO,good support by Ragavendar,Devi Lalitha,Neelu.Even the subsequent "Raj Se Swaraj"( with a Heavy Synth music by Louis Banks) was not a match in period depiction.Ofcourse Benegal s "Bharath ek khoj" (Vanraj Bhatia) was a good one.
but Tharayil Irangum Vimanagal (*ing Raguvaran) is the best one till date.Presenting the intelelctual relationship between a woman and her husband s younger brother is a tight rope walk;but so beautifully done on this Vasanthi s story adaptation by Karavannan.
Penn was a typical Mani Ratnam stuff from his better half,Half lighting, dialogues like " En?.........long pause" -"Vendam" .......long pause!".But the acting efforts were good.
Saravanan
I was there in your Dubai City Tower yesterday.Due to the short notice I missed the opportunity of meeting you and Cosmician.

Saraswathiyin Selvan by Cho was hilarious...He pulls every big film personality's leg royally in the serial...Varadarajan's Kalyanathukku Kalyanam was also a too good...These two were just out-and-out comedies...Mouli's Flight 172 (not Flight 714) had some senti too...The best part is the dialogues in english between Mouli and the other guy on the plane.."Thavil is a round, is a round, is a round, but square"...
BTW Madan Bob (who does a lot of comedy roles now) scored the music for Saraswathiyin Selvan (he acts in it too) and also for another YGM serial...I am sure he has done many more..If I remember right he appears as a keyboard player in a light music troupe, in one of the songs in Neengal Kettavai (or some other Thyagarajan movie)..

In Flight 172, Mouli with a serious voice:
Sir, I only 9th standard sir.
Other guy: Why?
Mouli: SSLC only in town, sir. Appachi said, no. You go town, you drink beedi!!
- From: OISG (@ 193.188.97.152)

Mouli was at his best in 172.
1.Mouli :"I put air ..(showing the Nadaswaram bottom) sweet music comes"
Copas: Are you a magician?
Mouli : I am a musician.
2.Moulis Thavil(to the Mumbai vidwan):"AAp Bombay me Nahi,Annan Madras mey"
Mouli :Ennayya sonne?
Thavil : "Eppa neenga Bombayla ille, athu mathiri annan madrasla (musician)"
Mouli:Ethukku nee Thamizhleye solli irukkalam!
MadanBob is a good musician.Vijay TV s Brand music by him was good. Also his work on Kutti Padminin s serial was good(About Custom officials).MB aped Visu in Saraswathyin selvan. The highlight of SS was Ragavendar s "Nayagan" Azhugai and Neelu seeing Sukumari s face on the eversilver plate(KB touch!)

Remember one episode from Penn(1991?) which featured Geetha.
Yes its Flight 172, not 714(which is the title of a Tintin comic :)) "The other guy" with Mouli was an English prof! Another funny incident was when the guy with the hearing problem turns off his hearing aid to frustrate a talkative co-passenger, doesnt get the announcements and misses his flight altogether.
Nityashree, Dheena doing well in today's soaps.
