Dear Friends,
Let us vote for 'Adi Rakkamma' from THALAPATHI as our choice for the World's Top Ten Songs poll conducted by BBC!
I am suggesting this song because if in case the BBC people listen to the nominated songs, they will feel knocked out on hearing our Maestro's 150 Vioins' Strings Ensemble!
Let us all do it at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/us/features/topten/
Yours Always Musically,
Vijay.

The first time when Vijay Venkatraman posted asking people to vote for Rakkammaa Kaiya thattu specifically, instead of just informing viewers/forumers about this site, he had already started the process of "poll rigging" . Like many other forumers, I was also caught up with the emotional part of seeing IR's name, a musician who I respect immensely, on the top and threw in my 2 cents to encourage people to vote. But what goes around comes around. It is only natural that the voting process is now a function of who has the time and computer at their disposal rather than representing the true popularity of the song/artist. I am not saying this because ARR's vande matharam is at the top. This would have been true even if Raakkamaa wins it.
The futilty of any such poll is the only obvious result :-)
Let the artist with the maximum number of "otherwise unemployed" fans win!!!!

***Meaningful Digression****
Any one has the information about the movie titled
"APPOTHEY SONNEN KETTIYA?" (Roughly translated DID I NOT TELL YOU BEFORE?)
It had JaiShankar as the Hero and music by IR.
We had already discussed about the following movies:
1. UNMAYE UN VILAI YENNA? (cho S movie)
2. VELICHATHUKKU VANGA (Mathi Oli Shanmugam movie)
3. YAARUKKUM VETKAMILLAI.(cho s movie)
Hope someone continues the digression!

BBC poll is getting interesting. Nice to see two thamizh songs in the top 10. Is there any link where i can listen to the 'Poovum Nadakuthu' song?

rajaG, ur ponnaana vaarthaigal wud have carried more weight if u had uttered them while RKT was still no.1 :)
but dont be too quick to dismiss the BBC polls yet. RKT might come back to no.1, and u'll have to re-establish it's importance, worth-whileness and might-of-the-fans'ness. :)

Brrrr!! This poll seems to be having more plots, counter-plots, twists and turns than a Vennira Aadai Moorthy drama. Nobody expected the Dil Dil Paki song to drop in unexpectedly like Miandad's last ball six. Anyway, just hope BBC's webserver isnt located in Sharjah! Nice to see that Are Yaar's frequent verbal dysentary got triggered off by "Pakistan"...for a change, it's not the word "Ilaiyaraaja". (NOM, BTW!)
If in the end, Vande Mataram, DDP and that Eelam song finish in the top 10(most likely), then BBC is going to dismiss the whole thing off as a farce, an exercise in jingoism(BTW, a GRE-preparing friend of mine used to memorise 'jingoism' as 'jingu jingu' yengira 'gosham'!). Do you really think that in such a scenario, the westerners are going to consider VM from the musical view-point?? ARR fans, surely you could have chosen Putham Puthu Boomi or Veerapandi Kottaiyile or even the more indian-ish Kannaalane...so that there is some musical merit in your choice. Then the Paki invasion wouldnt have happened.

I cant understand why we fight over a poll (that too by somebody who don't even know what is Indian music and who is Raja or ARR and most of all don't care abt their music)...I voted :) ...but after seeing the way people are showing their superiority in rigging, it means nothing.....does it matter now who(or which song) comes first after all this cheating? remember the poll abt the person of century....didn't we all voted for Gandhi....but DO WE REALLY NEED SOME POLL TO TELL US ABT GANDHI?....the same goes for IR....we are insulting the great musician by cheating and rigging the poll....if you can make a non Indian friend to listen to IR and appreciate his songs ....u can pat urself for doing the favor to ur pal..........but pls don't pat urself for rigging the poll and cheating............shame on us...............

It is fanaticism (fans who know only 'one' sound versus (IR) fans (who has open to all music)! This poll should be more like collecting data a pre-poll party, then comes the list from BBC and rules and conditions for polling etc.. this poll is more like a beach party. i mean i had my fun now let us not get play beach volley ball in the waters.

When it comes to music IR's is the best. But when it comes to rigging ARR fans are the best;-) Don't worry...VM wins bcos of ur hard work;-)

Dear fellow IR fans, since many other people has voted Vande Mataram for no.1 spot, we have 2 options..
first option is of course to vote more and more for adi rakkama...
second option is to vote for Vande Mataram, but in the artist section, fill it up as Ilayaraja.... Ilayaraja too has composed a song vande mataram in bharathi... if lots of people put ilayaraja as the composer for vande mataram, there will be ambiguity.
the worst case scenario will be like this : no.1 song is vande mataram, many versions by many artists....
but the no.1 original song composed by only one composer, with no other version would be our RAKKAMA!!!!

on: Tue Dec 10 03:15:08 EST 2002
Further to my earlier comment, just wanna point out that the other versions of Vande Mataram, besides ARRs and IRs are Rabindranath Tagore's original humming of the song to his own tune, S.D Burman, Naushad....
therefore ARR fans cannot claim that all the votes for that song is for ARRs version....
but IR fans can claim that all Rakkama votes are only for IR...

Nanbargale,
Vandhe Matharam - if it wins will not shower any glory on ARR! It is listed only as 'Various Artistes' in the Top Ten!
Even IR Fans can claim that Vandhe Matharam is IR's song - Remember IR has many Vandhe Matharams in His Music - Siraichaalai (Kalapani), Bharathi, Desiya Geetham and many more!
Remember, at first it was Bankim Chandra Chaterjee who was Vandhe Matharam's artiste! But ironically, ARR Fans are claiming it to be theirs, which is one to be laughed at! Now, it does not mention the lyrics of the song, anyone can claim that Vandhe Matharam is theirs provided it starts with the words, 'Vandhe Matharam'!
So the right thing for IR Fans would be to continue striving to take Rakkamma to the top. If even they lose, they lose it only to our National Song and not to ARR!
Now, u can ask me, why not IR Fans also select Vandhe Matharam, the National Song! IMHO, Vandhe Matharam should be respected but Rakkamma should be relished for its orchestration worldwide!
How many agree with me?

I want BBC to place 2 min samples of each song from now on and then let the public decide. (Those who want the meaning of words can be told that this is not a poetry reading programm)
what say?
