RV, when Amar and I compared notes on our respective VGP originals, we found that I have the complete Pandha Pasam movie on tape. (I'm sorry you are having such bad luck with the videos--first with karNan, now with Pandha Pasam).
Re your other question on Pandha Pasam songs, don't think they were hits by the Pava Mannippu, Pasamalar standards. I seem to hazily recall Radio Ceylon playing idhazh mottu virindhida and kavalaigaL kidakkattum maRandhu vidu quite often.

RV,
Yes, that used to be the case with VGP originals that came in the 80's. I dare to check their status now( don't want to waste more money there ). I have direct contact with VGP group people and they told me that they bought an expensive multi-copy video copier and that machine had a time limit of 2 hours. On top of that, Tte copying was done in a Bombay studio and the people who worked on it did not understand Tamil and Tamil movies( nor did they care!!! ) and hence to accomodate any Tamil movie into a 2-hour format, chopped scenes at random. We used to joke at the irony of chopping Stunt scenes from MGR movies, dramatic Pathos scenes from Sivaji movies and Comedy scenes of Nagesh movies.
I bought a whole bunch of Video cassettes from VGP when they came to sell cassettes in Boston and New Jersey and had to replce many of those by buying better originals again in Madras.
I bought "Kaathalikka Neramillai" from VGP and what a horrible condition that was in. Great songs, comedy scenes and several critical scenes were all gone. I threw it away and bought a good full-length original from Madras.

Does anyone remember whether there is a similar thread for KSG movies ?

Digression:
I did see SNSM again. One of the best Tamil movies I hv ever seen. I would put very few movies ( like Thanneer Thanneer and Kappalottiya Thamizhan ) ahead of this.

Interesting discussion - I went back & read the previous page too. I want to mention one of the early films Bhimsingh worked on - Rathnakumar. the film *ed PUC, Bhanumathi, & NSK. It was released in 1950 and was probably a flop? Direction is by Krishnan-Panju w/ Bhimsingh as the asst. director and story, screenplay writer. Both PUC & NSK are characters w/ several shades of gray - PUC is probably more run-of-the-mill in the sense that given the opportunity he makes all the wrong decisions (drinks, tries to seduce a princess, lies, etc), varunthiyapin thirunthuhiraar.
NSK on the other hand is more situationally challenged - he's a confidence trickster who latches on to a rich old man's family pretending to be the reincarnation of his dead son. Is he promising to remarry the widow for the money or does he really believe in widow remarriage (esp. given the seerthirutha dialogs he lets loose). This storyline is never really resolved - which also seems apt.
The film has nice songs by P. Sivan picturized on Bhanumati (devotional/philosphical - classical), songs by udumalai narayanakavi picturized on madhuri devi (secular, mellisai) and some combo songs that go all over the place - there's a really lengthy stage duet that spans hindustani, gypsy, folk etc (maharaajargalE maharaanigalE). A bharathiyaar style song was apparently popular (vElai migacheithiduvaaL - PUC solo) at the time.
Overall, well worth watching - you could trace a lot of the Bhimsingh style & twists in their formative stage. Picked it up via Anand Musical Paradise (opp. Sanskrit College Anjaneyar Kovil in Luz) when i was in Madras.

1. Kanpadum Ponvanname AMR-JR
2. Nan Oru Muttalunga-JPChandrababu

i am seeing this thread for the first time.
1) padikkaadha medhai is by bhimsingh - music kvm.
2) Sadhu Mirandhaal - only supervision by
bhimsingh (directed by thirumalai mahalingam
who directed madras to pandicheery also -
again supervision by bhimsingh)
3) in 1970 (or 71), one more movie in Paa series,
Paadhukaappu came, directed by bhimsingh,
* ing sivaaji and jayalalithaa. A Flop.
In this movie, the main character is jayalali-
thaa and not sivaji.
During his peak period, bhimsingh directed a lot of hindi movies also, mostly the remakes of his own films. He directed the hindi version of
aalayamani (in tamil, the director is K shankar)

Nagarajan: Unfortunately, the hindi films were failures too the aalayamani remake was aadmi (Dilip Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Waheeda Rehman I think). Sridhar directed the hindi paalum pazhamum - saathi (Rajendra Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, simi Garewal) - again flopped.
Off-topic:
The interesting thing about JJ is that by '70 she seems to have become number one/the topmost heroine. She seems to have begun demanding the more important roles/screen time. There's a movie called baghdad perazhagi '73? (an ulta-fied version of gulebagavali) where she gets first listing, separately before the hero, Ravichandran.
KR Vijaya continued to take lower budget films centered around her 'til the late 70s.
I think this sort of expectation/ experimentation ended with that generation.

There was one more "pa" series film, which was acted by Sivakumar, Jayachitra and Jaya (Guhanathan's wife). The film called "padha poojai" directed by Bhim Singh. I remember that this was his last film and the last portions were directed by his son.
There was a beautiful number by PS+VJ... "KaNNadiyamma un idhyam En kaNNe naan adhai paarthal en mugam kaatum"... Excellent rendering by the legends. The same song was repeated in happy mood by VJ (for Jaya) separately and pathos mood by PS (for Jayachitra).

Subbu,
Bhim Singh's last film was 'Kai pidithaval'(1978).
It was midway during this film that he passed away. It too had Sivakumar with two heroines- Sujatha and Sripriya. (Perhaps that led your mixing it up with Paadha Poojai).
Kai Pidithaval had music by SG. I remember 2 great songs- Ithu Illamai kaala Iravu-SJ (picturised on Sripriya) and Ilam vayathu vandhaal-SJ & PS (Sujatha & Sripriya).
I didn't know that Paadha poojai (1974) was by Bhim Sigh. But it could not have been his last, as he made memorable films later than 1974 like Sila nerangalil sila manithargal (1977), Oru nadigai naadagam paarkiraal (1978) and Karunai Ullam (1978).

Saravanan... sorry... i agree there was major slip in my message.. Kai pidithavaL was BS's last (not Paadha Poojai). But am sure PP was under BS's direction. I remember Jaichitra recollecting the film as part of her Malarum ninaivugaL (repeat shown in Podhigai TV).

I will give first mark to 'Paarththaal Pasi Theerum' in BS films.
A good story, very good acting by Shivaji (this is the only film under BS where Shivaji under played his acting - not over acting ), very good songs, good lyrics, kamal in dual role, good comedy by Thangavelu. Good BGM by VR. I have seen almost all BS films of Shivaji. I never got
bored with 'Paarththaal Pasi Theerum'.
(In title, all the actor/actoress pictures will be shown togother with the narration - ungal abimaana natchaththirangal nadiththadhu')

What is commonly called Sivaji's overacting is bearable through the Gaowravam/Thangapathakkam days. It's only afterwards, especially ~76/77 onwards that it is awful (coinciding with Bharathiraja/Mahendran/Balu Mahendra entering in a big way). I'd say the BS films are all ok - I'm partial to baagappirivinai and paalum pazhamum driven more by their music.
