YathrMozhi is absolutely fantastic. Classic IR and good recording as well. Kaliyoonjal sounds familiar to me (like Varusham 16 or Kizhakku vAsal).
I will try to listen to other songs.
Is 'YatraMozhi' available on CDs ?

Srikanth,
While all the mags were raving about DG's BGM , u r the only guy to give statements like "where is Raja" etc.

I think Srikanth is "kanganam kattufied" to put down Raja - I don't know why ? Well, Srikanth, were you refused an interview by Raja anytime?!!
At least your postings force me to think so.

Continuing on variety in Raja's creativity, he has certainly demonstrated his superiority over others in his pathos creations. There are numbers that are as haunting as sonnathu neethana in conveying the message. For Raja the verses were not dominant over his BGM unlike the songs of 60's where kavingar was running the show in most cases,IMO.
Ever heared of a soulful ,meloncholic ,haunting flute recital in the prelude of a song that sets the mood of the song and walks you through the woe caused by demise of the hero's love , the emotions pining for the lost love, the pains of a downcast heart so much to make you feel the fervor of grief. Take a listen to 'naan padum mouna ragam' , the haunting flute piece blows off steamM so much to make you feel the agony. The violin pieces tell you the sob story. SPB adores the song with his soulful rendering and the lyrics take care of the rest.
"naan paadum mouna raagam kEtkavillayA

I urge anyone who hasn't so far, to listen to
"unnai ethirpaarthen" from Vanaja Girija (what a rotten movie to score for!). I don't mind being labelled an IR fanatic; show me a song in the 90s matching it for the way the tune, orchestration, chorus, humming, interludes, vocals, are all blended the way IR has done. This is sheer creative genius; for those who deride that IR doesn't pay attention to minute details in composing these days, this is the answer.
I request those of you with classical music knowledge to listen to it & pls. comment.

In the same VANAJA GIRIJA, there is another song, "Munnam seidhu thavam unnai yennidathhil saerththadhu "by SPB and SJ - i think it is based on Raag Keeravani - terrific number - especially the humming chorus in the first interlude and the flute shrieks in the second interlude.

I was lisening to some Raja songs last weekend in which there were conspicuous use of carnatic flavor in the melody. I love such songs which are blended with carnatic elements as they strengthen the haunting nature of the song. In the song 'kootathile kovil pura' , SPB launches in to some swaram singing (probably called kalpana swarams) at the end of the song in a splendid manner. He is so fluent in swaying back and forth between swaras and first line of pallavi like that of a real carnatic singer. Raja deserves full credit again for bringing the best out from SPB. In another song 'keeravani'(padum paravaigal) , he has shown his excellence when he sings a preamble 'alapanai' and also kinda bridge-between first interlude and first charanam by launching into swaram singing , ending with 'Ni','Pa' and starting 'nee pAtthathAl thAnadi , soodAnathu mArgazhi'. Remarkable!. Even in some 'lighter' songs , i can see signs of creativity by Raja. In the song 'vanithamani' from Vikram, there are some preamble lyrics read in the melodious manner (kamal and ??) and SPB starts the pallavi so smoothly as if it is a continuation of the preamble lyrics! Subtle.

I heard this song which starts as.. vana kuyilE kuyil tharum
on radio yesterday. A beautiful melodious song with
interesting beats. The song very much sounds Raja-ish.
Can someone give details of this song?
