Shankar-Ehsan-Loy...maybe the only other MD with Bollywood roots also composing for TF....I was listening to their "Dil Chahta Hai"..except for the title track, all the other songs seem to meander around...but they are the only ones around in Bollywood who give a original techno touch to their music apart from ARR.
"Aalavandhaan" is their next big TF release...would like to hear your opinions on this trio.

Hi cosmician,
I fully agree with you that Indians can be original as proven by movies like Hey Ram, lagaan etc where the script was really fresh. I donot buy into this AS story by Kamal because I feel He is the one who brought this Hollywood inspiration to Kollywood. The number of movies he has lifted is known to everyone. I hope that Alavandan is his script as opposed to being inspired by "seven" or something

By the way Avvai Shanmugi is nothing but Mrs. Doubtfire meets Tootsie. Tootsie played by Dustin Hoffman released 20 years back. Our people good at copying English movies and rehashing to Indian way. I like the work since movies are made for pure entertainment.

Yeah not HYPE as you Guys SAy, definetely not HYPE, IT is because of GOOD MARKETING. Yes, Marketing is Everything and EVERYTHING is marketing. The movie was marketed well, it sold for a record amount in TF history (36 crores) and hence the Songs were sold.
But anyway the mUSic is really good.
LAST WEEK SHANKAR MAHADEVAN CAME TO COIMBATORE FOR A FUNCTION CALLED AS DUMMRA DUMM. HE SAID US TO GIVE A BIG HAND TO ARR, CAUSE IF NOT FOR HIM THEY WOULDNT BE HERE AND WOULDNT BE WHAT THEY ARE NOW.

Just digressed to hear more music of Shankar et. al. He seems to have done a typical Irish song in Dil chahta hai. Isn't this what ARR was planning to do in yElElo ??

Suggest listening to 'Raat Aati Hai' in Aks and the title song in Alavandhan..also listen to tanhayee in Dil Chahta hai (reminds me of another song)

RangA,
I'm sure you can do much better than this fool.
Verdict on Aalavandhaan soundtrack:
-compositions are startlingly fresh ranging from, pop, hard rock to Broadway showtunes' influence.
-unfortunately Kamal sings three songs, he laughs the hell out of one, he brays the hell out of the other two.
-un azhagukku is yet another algorithm song from VM. poruppu is the repeated word:
un azagukku thaai poruppu
un arivukku thamizh poruppu
Shankar-Ehsan-Loy have a bright future if they find other male singers besides Kamal and ditch VM.

oops!
ignore the note to RangA. That was a result of copy pasting from a personal note to a friend where the fool refers to the lyricist. I intended to keep the fool out of my posting, sorry for the unintended swearing.

Udayaa...IMHO, the choice of kamal's voice was motivated more by the demands of the script than by a need to make the song (Kadavul paathee) sound melodious. I think he has done a great job of reflecting the inner turmoil in the mind of a paranoid schizophrenic having delusional mood swings.
I agree with you on VM's algorithmic poetry though....this guy has a great tool to make a quick buck!

I agree with gyaani....Adding Kamal's voice makes it more realistic.
Right....the 'delusional mood swings' is very typical of a schizoprehnic..Another symptom is auditory and visual hallucinations.

I understand that the songs have been made with Kamal's character in mind..but unfortunately none of the songs make a good first impression with their tune..I see lot of computer-made gimmicks in that title song and also use of African beats in that nandhini song..but other than that, there is nothing much new to offer..

The article says 'Musicologists and lay listeners
alike are saying Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy have....'! Say, these musicologists and laymen have judged the album in 2 days of its release and passed on their valuable comments to Mr Hassan? Very interesting!
Kamal is a very shrewd Public Relations person. We've seen it in the past too. This is just a damn good PR gimmick to boost the prospects of the soundtrack and the movie.
I had sampled the tracks in Raaga and the very (afrikka) first track uses liberal doses of a song composed by Suresh Peters in his debut tamil pop album 'Minnal'...the song was incidentally called 'Roja'!
Except the SM-Sujata song every other song is in the 'whats this' category. Kamal's husky 'aadha insaan aadha jaanwar' or 'manithan- mirugam' part falls flat on his face.
But yes, the picturization could make a BIG difference to the OST. And looking at the amount of effort put into this movie, I'm sure it'd be world class. Lets just hope the film redeems the soundtrack. Being a Kamal fan I do wish the movie comes out well and supports Kamal's positive statements about the album!

the similarity in raat aati hai, tanhayee, chanda (yaadein), and aa*vandaan is bcoz of chakravaagam.

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with Chennai...but who's stying in Chennai? ARR is supposed to be in a area called Subbarayan Nagar isnt it? Where does IR stay in Chennai? Was wisher wishing it was IR?
If so, well, Kamal goes to IR first and then to anybody else, if the movie is his own. Here the producer was different but I suppose Kamal does have a very strong say in choosing the composers. So its a surprise that he ignored IR for this one. Or its surely possible that he did ask IR and maybe IR refused due to some reason.

Ok, regarding my earlier mail that the music of "Kadavul Paadhi" being similar to Goldsmith's "Link", here it is. Remember both are psychopath-on-the-loose movies. Try listening to it.

//"ARR is supposed to be in a area called Subbarayan Nagar isnt it? Where does IR stay in Chennai? Was wisher wishing it was IR? "//
yes! ARR stays in subbaraya nagar. I think just behind ashok nagar police station. pretty close by where brindhavan st extn. meets that traffic junction(ofcourse these details r with regds to 1998 memories, like when coming from brindh.. st. u needed to take a right at the junction and first left and u had panchathanthan inn in the right side of the road. my friend lived opp to that house. i have seen arr quite a few times.)
IR I was told lived somewhere near usman road (or was it bhog rd) though i am not sure at all. T.Nagar is quite a big place(ahem! ahem!).

Just listened to Alavandhan,
1) Siri siri beginning laughter was inspired. I have heard a song with just laughter. the singer just laughed the entire song with varying tempo and beats
2) kadavul paathi etc.: I think this should suit well with the movie flow. stand alone it is confusing. so this one is better said as judgment reserved.
3) alavandhan song is average nothing big.
4) Africa songs : ditto
i think kamal has done the KB style of making the song look good with the movies and decent songs stand alone (some of the KB not all :-) )
so we will have to wait for the movie which seems to be a cold ruthless and lot of blood and whacky stuff. Boy! this gets me all excited :-)
